to before now. A QB instead of DJU in 2022 keeps us a playoff team. OL or WR in 2023, DE for 2024. Wouldn't have taken but a couple players to keep us playoff level.

Dabo is a football coach, not a soothsayer who predicts the future. DJU is long gone so move on to something else like how many injuries we had his first year and having to play people who would have never played without the injuries.

We all disliked rattler because he became a gamecock but if he is under center instead of DJU our 2022 offense looks better.
Part of it was that our deficiencies on the OL magnified DJs weaknesses, but a QB with a little mobility in the pocket would have made a world of difference.

to replace DJ. I just think it's naive to think we got these couple of guys all of a sudden because we finally had a need and wasn't due to a little change in philosophy. The need has been there. Not for wholesale changes, but just a few players of the right fit.
I love Dabo and think he had a good plan. It's hard to develop a culture of hard work and earning your keep when you go out and get a replacement from the outside. Dabo was being loyal and trying to maintain that culture. Problem is, kids weren't being loyal back. People say we didn't lose anybody that hurt us, but losing players off the 2 deep definitely hurts.
High school recruiting was another part of it. Sure seems like a kid would choose a program where he didn't have to worry about being replaced by a transfer. Somehow it's not working out like that.
I'm sure there were tons of other factors like how much NIL the current player were getting. Certainly wouldn't look right to pay more to the transfer. Bottom line is i think we have it figured out now and my guess is you'll see a few each year.
I also believe this DE will show a bunch of fans just how beneficial it can be to plug a hole in your roster with a transfer.

I disagree. We have not lost because of the portal. Basically everyone did some catching up talent wise because of it but we still had good talent the portal is a shortcut for bad coaching and bad recruiting. The main reason he is doing it now is because people starting stealing the talent he had recruited to Clemson. He Basically had to finally say "if you are going to take my players i guess I will have to take yours"

Yep, everyone started getting better talent and we started dropping off with as many 4 star talented guys, and I personally believe that it's bc of coaches without the needed coaching experience that schools are using against us in recruiting!!!

It wasn’t just a few players that have stopped us. Offensive game plans are still too predictable. Defense still doesn’t seem to be able to adjust on the fly and opponents have taken advantage of that. I think lack of D adjustments, not having the right players on the firld and poor tackling have cost us 2 games this year. Bottom line, coaching cost us 2 games.

At 8-0 and in the first CFP projection DJU was in the Heisman talk. His YTD numbers plus our record echoed those of DW4 and TL16 in their natty years at the time.
Unfortunately, success is something that DJU finds difficult to handle apparently, and he wound up faltering down the stretch, delivering us two points shy of a Final 4 appearance by season's end.
If we had portaled in a WR in 2023, say goodbye to Tyler Brown as he was our last scholarship WR take for an otherwise full room. You can't have both.
We are at playoff level today.

The only way that could’ve works is if there was anybody in the portal better than he was look back at the time and see what was available in the portal and you’ll probably see that there was nobody better the DJ at that time. Once again, just let Dabo do his job be a fan like you’re supposed to without questioning everything he does and why he does it when it gets to a point where the majority of people think it’s unacceptable he would be asked to step down if he were actually doing a bad job. but like the other guy says he’s not had a knee until now and he did it. Want to know what I really love. Someone hires me to do a job. I tell them what I'm going to do and how I'm.going to do it. After I get started, they want to tell me how to do my job. I have looked at a few of them and told them, if they know what to do, why did you hire me?
Perhaps, if you know how to run a top tier football program, you should go do that. I hear it's quite lucrative.

That’s all well and good, but you have to move someone aside to be the other end of the spectrum you’re referring to.
The teams you’re thinking of (I.e., not LSU, Ol Miss, and FSU) have their minimal transfers in starting roles - not depth.

Context matters. If you go back to the interview and watch what led up to the question, and how it was asked and answered, it was directionally correct, but with a much different intended meaning. He was clearly frustrated with all of the flack he had taken over not using the portal and it came out in that interview. The man is human and I don't blame him for that, but it was something said out of frustration that was probably better left unsaid, based on the impression it left with a lot of national media that just fanned the flames further, which was unnecessary.
Dabo used to be much better at diffusing questions like this rather than taking dead aim and causing further negative reaction that could have been avoided.

When the portal became a thing he was probably dead on. The pay for play had not hit what it is today and it seemed only those not getting an opportunity to play where they were were entering. It has definitely changed over the last few years.

Well, it's way true.
Almost all of the guys in the portal are in the portal because they cannot get PT at their current school. About half of the guys who go into the portal NEVER get picked up by any other team.
Sure, there's a handful of elite players who want a different situation ($$$$), but "most" of the rest are unlikely to be good enough to earn a starting spot here. Some might be able to contribute depth, or help rotations, if their egos would let them accept that.

Everyone seems to forget about the upcoming 105 player limit. It's going to take a couple more starters or immediate contributors from the Portal because there will be fewer players to develop. If the "miss" percentage goes up, then there will be a real scramble for portal players.

We were slated for 17 incoming in our HS class this year as that was the number that we were expected to lose from the 85-man roster. If you recall we had 7 decommit and we replaced them only with 5. 17 - 7 + 5 = 15. Dabo just portaled in the remaining 2. 15 + 2 = 17.

And I seriously doubt we simply outbid competitors here up front either. We offer a great package beyond just a signing bonus, including opportunities for more if you're earning it in the program. The amount would have to gel with what our in-house is in store for - no way around that.

This edge rusher from Purdue may make Dabo hit the portal more often. I don’t care for this current state of college sports, but it wasn’t fair for kids to be recruited by coaches who left for greener pastures while their recruits were stuck.

But here’s the thing. Exactly ZERO players needed to be replaced. We lost players to the portal. That means there were open spots.

But just for clarity can you name the players you would have like to move aside for a transfer. Keep in mind we did recruit several OL for starting slots, but we missed on them.
I’m not sure which starting WRs should have been benched for a transfer. Who are you thinking?
I agree on the QB. Someone like Dillon Gabriel would have immediately lofted the program.
Other than that - transfer players don’t transfer to be added depth.

B Collins was fine. He’s starting for a playoff team by the way. Ngata was fine. Both would have benefited from a real QB. Neither D Collins (who transferred out because he wasn’t a starter) or Spector were starters unless someone else was hurt.

I know the 2 that transferred to FSU a couple years ago would've been better than anything we had at the time.
a LB or two.........DE or two would've been nice this year........QB definite.
I've said for 3-4 years..........we need 4-7 impact players at strategic position groups (depending on the year)............as evidence with our on field product which has been far below elite.
Dabo FINALLY has taken the "next steps" in hopefully rehabilitating us back to ELITE level. Acquire impact talent utilizing EVERY AVAILABLE RESOURCE!!!!!

All the other things you mentioned would have been nice to have depth, but again, the elite teams aren’t taking portal kids to be depth. That, and portal kids aren’t transferring to be depth.
And too, I asked who you would have replaced over the last 3-4 years, not your wish list on incoming.
You forgot to mention names. I’m sincerely curious who you would have pushed to the side.
I maintain we would have been INSTANTLY better with a real QB in 21 and 22, and that would have paid immediate dividends with the WRs as well.
Bottom line - settle down. Dabo hasn’t changed a thing and he sure as heck isn’t listening to you. He’s tried to get specific starters before. Nothing new - other than we landed one.
Again, we will not be picking up random portal kids for depth. As it is, we may need a starting safety. Possibly an LB if they're willing to initially back up Woodaz and Brown and compete for playing time from there. Unfortunately we won’t likely find any portal kids willing to accept that role, unless we dip down to somewhere like SW Missouri for a hungry guy looking to step up in level.

By that token you have to mean replacing non-starters with non-starters. That is, “depth”.
Not many transfers are moving to be non starters. The whole concept of adding transfers for depth is a misnomer. The teams utilizing the portal on a minimal level, like what most are talking about, are utilizing it for starters. Not depth.

again. No, maybe not every last one of them. But that is undoubtedly the norm.
Regardless of that, portal players aren’t in the portal to be depth and be in the same role they just left. Call it a broad brush if you wish, but that’s exactly what’s happening at the elite level.
The other option is build your program as a revolving door and portal guys. That’s proven to be a bad approach.
Don’t know what elite programs are building depth with the portal, but feel free to provide examples. I’ll check back later.

A huge chunk of players in the portal are there solely due to overinflated ego of "I should be a starter!" About half of them get a harsh reality check when they realize they have thrown their scholarships away...they never land at any new school because they are simply not as good as they think they are.

1. Staff sees a need
2. Possible good fit is located
3. Potential transfer fits the culture
4. Reasonable offer extended
5. Transfer is ok with offer
6. Transfer wants to be at Clemson.
7. Offer accepted and signed.
If any one of these are not met whole deal falls through. I do not think any one here knows exactly how many have been approached or offered. Of that number, no one here knows how many turned us down. Just the fact that we have not signed any before now, does not mean we have not tried. Many here will say we haven't tried because, until now, no one has signed.

I can keep posting this...
Some people act like the portal is a menu at a Chinese restaurant..."I'll have the #1 from the WR column, and the #3 from the OL column, and add in a #7 edge, thanks." and that it just happens becuase you asked for it...
Remember that about half of all the kids in the portal have just thrown away their scholarships, because they will never get another offer to play anywhere--they're just not as good as they think they are.
So we just need to identify the players in the portal who:
* fill some gaps in our lineup
AND
* are not "problem children" on a path to drugs, DUI, arrests...
* are willing to fill those gaps, even if the gaps are 2nd and 3rd on the depth chart
* are willing to sign without any guarantee of playing time unless they earn it
* are willing to sign without up-front NIL guarantees
* want to be at Clemson instead of somewhere else (any of the above being more important to the kid)
Pretty sure Dabo would sign these kids in a heartbeat. Why wouldn't he?

Players picked up in the portal still have to beat out the guy who is on board for the starting job. I am not convinced that this DE we picked up will be able to beat out Lawson for the starting job. Will be interesting to see. Either way he will be a good addition to our DE room.

It is hard to believe anyone really believes we have not needed it until the 2025 season. We needed WRs in 2023 in the worst way and needed a DE this season. There are other positions which have needed an injection of talent as well.

As usual, spot on.
Dabo said (1) we can't get guys that already there and know where they are going, even if we could use them (in essence, pointing out that we aren't getting guys in the portal b/c of tampering and are already paid for) and (2) we aren't taking someone who is about the same as what we already have at a position (that makes no sense, but probably where the "idea" that he said no one is good enough for us in the portal ... which he didn't say.) Moreover, the idea that he WON'T use the portal is stupid given he has offered in the past ... but we didn't get those guys. Probably b/c the cost is more than he is willing to pay ... he isn't refusing to use it, he is refusg to get into bidding war. He chooses to invest NIL differently ... we can discuss whether that's a good strateagy or not, but it does not mean he is rejecting transfers completely.
