The transfer portal has never made a good team a champion

unless you get a complete stud at QB. The portal has generally just made bad teams average (ie. Colorado) and average teams into very good teams (ie. FSU). Michigan would have won the chip last year with or without the portal. UGA has be been dominant the last few years without difference makers from the portal. Historically, only Cam and Joe Burrow (QBs) have been transfers that have been good enough to get their team over the hump.
Although everyone seems to hate Dabo's way, building a home grown squad and retaining your talent has historically been the way champions have mostly won.

I looked through list of the OL who entered the portal in 2024. Of those, I only saw about eight 4-star or better. The rest are 3-star players. Those 4and5 star transfers likely had a new home before throwing their name in pot. So do we need to pick up a 3-star OL who probably entered the portal because they weren't good enough to play for their former team or recruit a HS player who fits the mould Dabo is looking for?
I feel our current group of OL has the talent but our coaches haven't been able to get it out of them and get them in sync with one another. Enter Matt Luke. I feel coach Luke will be able to get the most out of the OL. I'm looking forward to watching the OL improve over the next couple of years.
GO TIGERS!

Seems like Dabo and Co offered 2-3 portal OL this past off-season

and didn't land one, so hard to understand why some folks continue to make so many waves about it on here. I guess when you've got trolls and the same media that was running down Dabo in the early days still at it with whatever they can find today it's going to be hard for some to get past.

This excuse is so overused and overblown and it is an insult to fans intelligence. Reminds me of Cheatle yesterday saying the same BS over and over with her dead eyes. We know Dabo is anti portal and at least not publicly, anti NIL. It’s conflicting with who he is as a person.
Clemson would have been in the playoffs last year with a few lineman, WRs, and a good QB. We had a defense to win it all.

That you, Tyler? In assistance of your ignorance here, Dabo was one of the pioneers of setting up an NIL media lab for our players to take advantage of it almost immediately upon its inception. His work has since expanded to include the entire athletics department. It's my understanding we're Top 20 in NIL use in the country, not bad for an overall program that's barely Top 25. You're welcome.
Dabo is clearly and openly against the free agent style use of the portal and its negative impact on players and their development. He does offer here, as proven this past cycle, but he is as selective and stingy with offers there as he is with HS recruits. That's been a real strength of his over these years as our 10-15th ranked classes have produced champions. It's a secret sauce that you're ######## on here. Embarrassing.
As far as all those wish list positions last season - how about PK, genius? That's the position that hurt us the most out of the gate.
This is BS clown talk.
Go Tigers.

We have seen our yearly losses increase over the last few years.
The onus is on Dabo to show that his way can work in this new era of college football. So far it’s not working too well.

It worked fine in 2022, with 11-3 record, ACC Championship and an Orange Bowl birth. Even last years FSU team with all of their portal players lost in the Orange Bowl.

The problem is if you are not taking anyone from the portal, then you are operating at a negative result. Because, we certainly lose them that way.

We handed that over like candy in that game with goal line TO's and missed FG's.
Absolutely I believe that a healthy and vibrant WR corps in Game 1 and accurate PK would have won us that by 10.

Something we didn’t do.
That allowed a team that had not recruited nearly as well as us to compete with us (and beat us by three scores) due to a combination of improved talent and experience.

You’re going to bring up final polls when they beat us by 21?!?
But to answer your question, we both finished 4-4 in the ACC. They have the tiebreaker in that case.
It’s also important to remember that their QB, Riley Leonard, had them 4-0 until going down with an ankle injury late against Notre Dame. They were without him for all but two games the rest of the season. It is reasonable to think that they would’ve won at least a couple more games if they had him, yet even without him most of the year they still had a season very comparable to what we had.

Joe Burrow played on a team with 3 first rounders and an OC that brought an NFL mindset to their team. Burrow was good in his junior year but was not elite until Joe Brady showed up.
To your point, gotta have building blocks in place.

I don’t think anyone is arguing we should build a team from the portal. I also don’t see how anyone could argue we would have not been better with 2-4 offensive players from the portal the last three years. Just top off the tank at a position or two of need

My goodness people… it’s been proven over and over and over and OVER… the transfer portal absolutely works if used correctly.
For the billionth time… no one is clamoring for us to be Colorado. We are simply saying addressing positions of weakness with 3/4/5 additions through the portal could/would be the difference.
Don’t ask me which players… that’s why our coaching staff is among the highest paid in college football. That’s their job.
It’s ok for literally every other sport at Clemson to use the portal but Dabo is smarter than every other coach in America.
Literally every single school except the military schools and Clemson use the portal. We’re going backwards with more losses while everyone else seems to be moving forward and getting better.
Michigan won a national championship… with transfers. Georgia who has had the #1 or 2 recruiting class for the last 4/5 years… uses the portal. They have more talent than us but they still use it. Ohio St has more talent but they use it. Alabama has more talent but they use it.
Do you see the trend here? Those schools are staying at the elite level while we have fallen at best into the 2nd tier of top teams.
No matter how much any of you want the portal to be the big bad wolf… it’s not. It’s there to help you… unless of course you just flat out refuse to use it like Dabo.
Don’t give me the NIL money bs. GT went and got former 5 star QB Haynes King from Texas A&M and the kid looked pretty good to me. Even got GT to a bowl game for the first time in what 5 years?
NC St went and got Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina and I’d be willing to bet he’ll have a very good year. These are just 2 of the many examples of schools that have used the portal to their advantage at the most important position on the field but we can’t bc we don’t have the money?
GT and NC St can afford to better their teams at the highest valued position money wise but we can’t go get a WR? A couple OL? A kicker?
Give me a break man. It’s ridiculous some of you continue to post this ridiculous nonsense day in and day out and you think it makes you a better fan. It doesn’t at all. It means you’ve got your heads so far up Dabos behind that you can’t see the forest for the trees.
The portal works end of story. As long as we continue to refuse to use it… we will continue to sink back into mediocrity.

Also… keep pointing to those recruiting rankings for us. Go ahead and keep on. We may be top 10ish… but it’s bc of our defensive recruiting. Go look at our class right now. Our top 6 commits are all on defense.
In this era of college football it doesn’t matter how great your defense is… you have to be able to score points to win national championships. You can’t win every game 10-6.
The big time offensive guys require money up front bc it’s what every single other school recruiting them is offering them. If someone showed up to recruit your son and offered “family atmosphere” and the chance to earn money you’d consider it. Then every other recruiter walks in and leads with… here’s the money we’re willing to pay up front for your son… every single person here just about is going to take the up front money and if you say you wouldn’t you’re either lying or you’re stupid.
Yes… we will get a handful of kids here and there that don’t care about money up front and are willing to work for it… like Moore/Wesco but going forward you’re going to see less and less of those types with each passing season.
So we can be ranked #1 in every defensive statistic but it won’t matter if we can’t put 21 points on the board is every game. We can’t score points without top notch talent and that’s been proven under Dabo.
When our QB is the best player on the field every game… we win. When he’s not… we still win our share but nowhere near the level we were during our run. Those days are over unless Dabo starts playing this game the way it’s played today.
Money talks and bs walks and no matter how many of us disagree with it… that’s the way it is now and will be going forward. Even if they try to regulate it somehow it still won’t change anything for us. That door has been kicked wide open and theirs no closing it now.
Unless Dabo starts playing the recruiting game with money… we will never win another national championship or even get close under him. We will be a solid team consistently but that’s it. We are a 8/9 win program going forward doing things the way we are.

This is a new game … for the 2024 season. The extended playoff games makes depth more important than ever. No matter how good your team is, you are not going to make it through the playoffs without quality depth.
This is just my opinion. Longer season = more injuries.

Well finally. Someone who agrees with my opinion on the TP. I think most of it is hype, the next bestest thing if you will. In a couple years it’ll settle out and things will be back to usual - with a few trade deals in the background. And the Tigers will still be on top

And it will never...the closest it ever came was when Cam went from juco to auburn and it wasnt even the official portal back then
The only way a portal year makes a champion is if the team gets "that guy" at qb...thats the only position that can have that kind of a effect...but why would that ever happen??? Ask so cal how that worked out...football is the ultimate team sport!!!
