The portal and the HS development debate

It's frustrating seeing Blake Hebert, our 2025 QB commit, flip to Notre Dame, leaving us with just 13 commits in the class. Dabo's no-portal stance is admirable because he shows loyalty to the players who commit to developing within the system. He isn't pulling in transfers to replace guys who have put in the work, but that seems lost on some recruits.

What’s baffling is that more high school athletes aren't seeing the advantage of a coach who commits to player development without chasing the quick-fix route through the transfer portal. With Hebert's departure, we’re stuck hearing about NIL deals and instant gratification, but it’s unfortunate that more kids aren’t attracted to Dabo’s commitment to grooming talent over time. We might be short on numbers for 2025, but we've still got quality. Clemson's culture is about doing it the right way, and it’s going to pay off for players who stay the course. But clearly, it’s getting harder to convince these top guys that staying is better than chasing what’s "hot" elsewhere.

We all know Clemson develops, but high schoolers are missing the message. That seems clear, and it's not good.

We're either going to have to start using the portal or offering cash to high school kids. This 2025 class is looking rough.

Seems like we aren't doing either, and the cracks have already started to show.***

Hopefully that new money will flow into the school coffers shortly and Clemson can began to use this steady source of funds to entice more good players to our school. If not, gonna have a tuff time competing for talent in today market.

So we don’t have money to pay high school kids or it’s a matter of principle? I thought it was the latter.

"I've played multiple sports and would bet any amount that I'm still more athletic than you at this present time...."

Nothing has changed.

The kids who fit the Clemson program still come to Clemson.
The prima donnas go elsewhere.

That’s the way we want it anyway.

Same as it ever was.

Enjoy the ride. Go Tigers!

It's funny. I remember back in the 90's hearing Coach K talk about recruiting at Duke. His basically said that if you're a player on Duke's short list, I know you can play basketball. I need to know how you'll fit into our system. But as the years went on, even he knew that the days of "1 and done" were upon him. Duke still won (NC in 2001,2010 and 2015).

So how do you recruit a player (in any sport) that believes they're ready and don't really need you for any development? I just need a place to show the world my God given talents. How do you tell a kid that you're not as good as you think you are, while NIL deals and other schools say different?

I don't want to be the killer of dreams. But how many times can you tell a kid that the streets are filled with NFL and NBA wannabes? That's the food that feeds the NIL and transfer rulings. Get it now, because you may not get it later. And I get that. But Dabo said something a while back that I'll never forget. "I want o be able to look these guys in the eye when they're 35".

There's more to it than wins and losses. Dabo believes that. That's good enough for me.
