LSU releases statement on Odel Beckham Jr. giving cash to players after title win

It wasn't monopoly money after all. NFL receiver and LSU alum Odel Beckham Jr. was seen on video giving out $100 bills to receivers Justin Jefferson and Jontre Read Update »

Look, I've finally come to the conclusion, LSU was the better team and deserved the win. With that being said....

As a Clemson fan there is a part of me that would love to see this blow up into putting an asterisk by their vacated title. Vindictive I know, but I can admit it.

However, as a former Student Athlete if this blows up, it's really the stupidity of OBJ that could put a stain on the LSU student achievements. What a waste. I mean what are the LSU players gonna do, not accept the handshake on the field at the time of celebration.

On another note, I cannot imagine a recent former Clemson grad being as blatantly stupid as OBJ, of if there is one, Dabo would keep him away.

What a stupid mess.

I feel no shame in saying that I hope that it comes back to create a huge stink for LSU simply bc of the LSU student fans screaming out FK Clemson. I haven't been able to return to DV since the beat down we put on FSU when we knocked what's his name, the QB out the game. But I can swear that I have been in DV 100 or more times to watch our Tigers play over my 57 years as a Clemson Tiger fan, and I have never heard a fan of ours students or any other age screaming out vulgar names at the visiting teams or their fans... So yes, I'm hoping for the worse that can come from this Beckham thingy, or any other crap pile they step in in the future!!! I feel no shame whatsoever with wishing bad for that program and their fans!!!

Really...some idiot fans screaming obscenities, makes you wish bad things on LSU...there are idiots in every fanbase. We got beat by the better team this year, plain and simple. No team wins all the time...not one. Losses happen...time to move on. With the talent coming in to Clemson, they will be scary next year.

Seriously. If some chuckle head like Beckham pulls this sort of stunt, it’s ridiculous to hold the LSU organization accountable, much less penalize the school. The players involved were caught up in the moment. Make it a teaching moment snd move on.

He had a LSU sideline pass...he was known to everyone...talking to players during the game...he gave out free headphones which the University had to sanction...Uncle Bill sounds like another Uncle...all of this was known...Fox Sports and ESPN knew he was drunk or on something (coka-cola) and all his actions should be a reflection on LSU, Ed and the Athletic Department! The school had alumni paying players on the sidelines and then tried to cover it up with a terrible lie. If that's not lack of institutional control I dont know what is.

Beckham handing out 100s was not a lack of institutional control because i doubt anybody had any clue that was going to happen. An appropriate response would be to ban Beckham from the program going forward and maybe give the kids a slap on the wrist if they are back at school next year. In any case, even if it happened and violated NCAA rules, it would not result in vacating their title. I don't think it could anyway, because the money was given after the title game. It could maybe result in some suspensions next year, but unless it were proven that the money was promised earlier, I don't think it would affect any game outcomes that happened before the rule violation. I for one hope they can just return the money or give it to a charity. If these players did not know what he was going to do, it may not be a violation unless they cover it up or keep the money. LSU was just the better team this year, and to be honest, based on how they played, Ohio State was as well. I am all for just moving on, because 2020 Clemson should be scary good. I also do not blame LSU for the rude behavior of some of their fans, and every fan base has some idiot fans. I certainly do not want Clemson held responsible for some of their idiot fans.

If it were proven that the players had spoken before the game regarding potential payments from OBJ? i.e. organized incentives for winning the game? Regardless of the timing at which payment was received, seems like it wouldn't be OK for student athletes to even engage in conversations about payments (just like they aren't allowed to talk to agents) prior to the game. Those guys didn't look surprised at all to receive the cash ... certainly looked prearranged. I'll always consider them the champs, and nothing will or should ever take that away, but it sure would be fun to remain the only Tigers with a big gold trophy(ies) in our facility!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: LSU releases statement on Odel Beckham Jr. giving cash to players after title win

Jan 16, 2020, 1:19 PM

The thing that strikes me is the apparent attitude that the NCAA will ignore what happened. Not by everyone that observed it, but by OBJ, the players involved, and officials from LSU. I can't see where anybody can claim ignorance, therefore the alternative is that they thought they were above the NCAA.

ANY booster is going to know that they cannot give the players money. OBJ being a former player would have known better than a normal booster. The fact that he did it knowing that it would likely be caught on tape makes it incredibly brazen.

Any players are going to be aware that they are not allowed to accept money. They would not have been under the impression that the season is over, it is OK now. Maybe they care so little for their school that they think that there will be no negative repercussions for them, but they know it is against the rules.

Officials from LSU, however, are the worst ones in this situation. They would know that it would take very little investigation to find out if the bills were real. Either they turned their head and did not want to find out, or more likely knew and tried to hide the fact. They knew that they allowed OBJ to be on the field, and so indirectly sanctioned any of his actions. Knowing what he did, they then tried to hide the facts, and now that they are caught, are claiming they didn't know. If they didn't, it was simply because they did not want to.

Less than a year ago, the athletic department did its best to ignore the evidence from an FBI investigation implicating their basketball program. They only "suspended" the coach when there was simply no other alternative. Since then a booster has gone to jail for embezzling money to pay the family of an offensive lineman. Now a former player is paying guys on camera, and they promote a story that at best one they considered highly questionable, but a narrative they liked, or at worst, a story that they constructed themselves to try to hide the truth.

At some point the NCAA, I would think, will have to take the stance, that turning a blind eye, is accepting the actions. If the NCAA does not then they are advocating illicit activity. They don't necessarily need to come down hard on LSU. However there seems to be systemic issues that just can't be ignored.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's common knowledge that Beckham is an idiot

Jan 16, 2020, 1:26 PM

There's no way this was planned or anything. The guy was probably high as hell and just started pulling out money after the game. The dude probably walks around with a nice bankroll so i doubt peeling off some hundreds is anything out of the ordinary that would require advanced planning.

LSU should ban him from the program, but that's about it IMO.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, the NCAA is certainly capable of ignoring violations.

Jan 16, 2020, 4:03 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: LSU releases statement on Odel Beckham Jr. giving cash to players after title win ]

After the Fiesta Bowl, both Ryan Day and the OSU Athletic Director openly criticized the (SEC) game officials, a violation of NCAA rules. In fact, the AD contacted a reporter and told the reporter, "We got cheated out of the game. I'm pi$$ed off, and you can quote me on that."

And if that isn't enough, the B1G Head of Officials also openly criticized the SEC officials. He responded to Referee Williamson's statement that "the ball was moving, therefore it was incomplete" (on the reversal of the incomplete/fumble by Ross) by saying that "he [Williamson] is wrong. The ball was not moving." It's one thing for him to say he disagrees with the call, but quite another to say that the Referee (and the replay team, and the home office) was wrong. He also called the SEC Head of Officials and criticized the game officials. IMO, he should be at least suspended and preferably fired for his actions.

So here's the question... has the NCAA taken any action in either of these incidents? No, and they probably won't.

Every team has players who get “the handshake” from boosters/alumni, and yes, definitely including us.

Doing it so blatantly as OBJ did is just a pathetic call for personal attention and shows a complete disrespect to his college and the problems it would cause when caught on camera.

For the most part, no fan base really cares about this, So just wait until the player are through the tunnel and don’t make it obvious.

Re: TNET: LSU releases statement on Odel Beckham Jr. giving cash to players after title win

Jan 16, 2020, 1:51 PM

Last year the NCAA found trace amounts of a forbidden enhancement drug in three CU players, and nothing would convince them that these young men did not know they were using the drug. It cost one player an entire season of football. So should we now believe that these LSU players are innocent bystanders in this situation, which is as transparent as the nose on your face? Just like DL, they’re headed to the NFL, so no punishment will come to them. But what about LSU? In the aforementioned case with Clemson there was no lack of control by our administration. In the LSU case, as was mentioned In an earlier post, they let OBJ on the field and in their locker room. Is there not a case for lack of institutional control? In the days of the old NCAA, this event would trigger a full-fledged investigation. That’s what should happen now. Will it? I doubt it. This is LSU and the all powerful SEC that we’re talking about.

It's perfectly all right to punish Clemson for Ostraline trace amounts and potentially ruin their chances of a NATTY...now we've since heard of the lab errors which make even that suspect...but OBJ in the face of the NCAA rules...he was cleared by LSU...field pass...talking to players during the game, antics on the sidelines...LSU AD & Coach knew of all this or should have...he is their responsibility...you don't get in the locker room by luck! NCAA will blow this one off and pass on punishing anyone in the SEC unless it is judged to be critical? LSU is a joke and they can win all they desire but they will never be 'Champions' just losers with a trophy! What does that make the NCAA & SEC!

“Lack of Institutional Control” used to be a big no-no.

Jan 18, 2020, 7:40 PM

It sure weighed heavily against Clemson back in the day.

If he so brazenly gave money after the game what would lead anyone to be confident he wasn’t handing it out before the game?

LSU should be made to disassociate themselves from Odell Beckham, Jr.

At least ...

OBJ & former LSU players

Jan 27, 2020, 2:49 AM

Former LSU players are very involved with LSU, many return to BR and use the facilities to work out. they are also available to help the players but not illegally.

OBJ comes from a very good family, both parents are professionals. He was always a good kid, never a problem, until he signed a $100mil contract, became a celebrity and then became a THUG. Many, including LSU fans, were critical of his antics before this act.

Former players have given much. Former DB "Honey Badger" Tyrnn Mathieu was kicked off of the team, was taken in by family of another former LSU player Patrick Peterson, got himself straight and became an All-Pro. He is around the program, donates $$$$$$$ and talks to the kids about the importance of getting their lives straight. Shaq funds a program to teach athletes "Life Skills", how to act and do right. 3b Alex Bregmann gave $$$$$$$ to renovate the baseball locker room.

This incident is an embarrassment to LSU but it is the first such incident by a former player. LSU had no defense against this azzwholery, no warning that it would occur. Those he gave $$$ to should give it back or be ineligible, but those we know about were not going to play again after that game anyway so loss of eligibility is irrelevant.

Would be hard to see how any significant punishment would be justified.

Can't just assume something happened.

If LSU were told to disassociate from OBJ most LSU fans would be delighted.

If there’s no penalty for LSU then the NCAA should be banned from CFB for “Lack of Institutional Control”!

Rules mean something or they don’t.

That incident does not approach in any way the definition of "lack of institutional control"

If it does, please explain how it meets those criteria.

Difficult to police what individuals do at certain times.

But for LSU to immediately come out and say the money was fake indicates they didn't look into it or they were lying about it.

It's still be called fake if Burrows gave a rats ### about LSU.
