Watching Texas helps remind me that a program can lose its way...

and find it again. Texas is a great program that has struggled between 2010-2022. The records:
2010 5-7
2011 8-5
2012 9-4
2013 8-5
2014 6-7
2015 5-7
2016 5-7
2017 7-6
2018 10-4
2019 8-5
2020 7-3
2021 5-7
2022 8-5
Last year they were 12-2 and they are off to a good start this year. They brought in good coaching, effective recruiting, solid game plan execution and play calling, timely adjustments.
I hope we don't take the same 13 years to get to the same turnaround, but this proves it can be done.

Bringing Sark in was the biggest change, and the offense scheme he brought with him. Sark also is a great recruiter and he hired a solid staff. Like GA, OSU and others, he has confidently assembled a roster that has a good mix of HS and portal players, including his starting QB.
He is also blessed with a fan base and big dollars to go after who he wants...

You should also use Nebraska and USC as data points in this discussion. Had NIL not been implemented, Texas might not have recovered. Unfortunately the recent changes in CFB favor the rich schools

A big alumni base equals an awfully large fan base, and that equals a + + in the NIL-portal era. That is something that our Tigers could really use to keep an elite FB program pointed up!!! We should all pray that some kind of governance will come in to help the NIL to be equal for all of college sports bc if not as sad as it will be, our NC days are over!!!

well a lot of clemson people tried to sabotage the program after danny left in anger. Getting hatfield wasnt bad enough they had to work against him. That got us ill prepared west as a danny appeasement hire which also didnt work. much of that era was self inflicted

The administration was NOT behind the football program. That’s why Danny was let go. Max was power struggling against it. To be good in football in those days was viewed as a negative by our administration…made the academic side look bad. It was a very insecure and naive view. Of course some of that was because to be good in those days you had to do NIL the old fashioned way…at least that’s how most did it, including Danny. Fans did not sabotage the program. They still showed up for games under Hatfield. I was there. Get that mess out of here. Fans had a short leash view of Kenny because our admin let our most successful coach ever go because of the University President’s insecurity of dealing with a strong personality coach. Hatfield ran out of Danny’s players and was the 90’s version of Tommy Bowden. Won games but was never going to win big games and championships. So you’re a flexbone admirer! 😂

It wouldn't have taken so long if the right coaching staff would have been put in after Danny Ford. With the talent that Ford left behind, and with the right coaching staff assembled, Clemson could have been moving up shortly after Danny. We had to hit pretty close to rock bottom before Bowden was hired, and once he got us as high as he could take us, he stayed 4 years to long!!!

Hey let's face it, without some control of the portal with players ducking in and out at will, and without some governance of the NIL that can make it equal for all of college sports, if went didn't completely hit rock bottom between Ford and Dabo, we will this time even with Dabo. Dabo has went as far as he's gotten bc he has had total support from our AD and our Board of Trustees, but neither of those two can help with the NIL or portal unless someone heads up a group from all colleges to push for stronger rules of the portal and governance of the NIL that could make it equal for all of college sports. If they done that, I believe it would make college sports stronger than ever as far as the number of really good teams, it wouldn't be that just a couple of schools that aways had the power...

It became a lot easier for them to win again. It’s why you’re seeing southern cal and Miami getting back in the mix. The NIL gave these money schools their mojo back. And schools like Clemson are fading back into the fold bc we can’t play the money game like they can.

I don’t buy the money argument completely. We found the money to build the best facilities that can compete with anyone in the country. I don’t understand why we can’t find the money to get some of the best talent as well.

The facilities game worked in Clemson’s favor. We can build 5 star luxury facilities for a fraction of what it costs say, USC or Miami. When that was the arms race, we had the high ground. Margin worked in our favor.
Now, it’s cash vs cash. That is a different game.
I also think Dabo’s system and values were worth more before skill players could get paid directly. Everything else equal, I’m not sure we get Nuk, Sammy and others in today’s game. And I don’t mean that as a slight on them personally. I just think it’s that different now.

It can. And that’s a lot of years of mediocrity. But…
The winds of the game changed in a way that favors programs like Texas (big-a alumni base, big money) and they moved to the SEC, which helps both recruiting and money.
I’d argue the game of college football moved in a way that it became a tailwind for program like Texas and a headwind for the type of program Dabo wants to run at Clemson.
Hiring Sark helped. But I don’t think that program is where it is now without the change in conf and change to NIL/portal rules.

One year does not make a turn around when they were 10-4 just 5 years earlier in 2018. Your standards may be too high but I do agree Texas has a shot to win it all this year.

They only had 3 seasons out of 12 that they had better than 5 losses (2 of those were 4 loss years and 1 was 3 losses). With us, the sky is falling at 9-4 so imagine if we had a 12 year run like this where you only had 1season less than 4 losses and that was in a Covid shortened year.
