The last thing TL16 needed was a 188lb WR who may play some Defense

The hapless Jags traded up, the 1st NFL team to trade up in 28 years for a non-QB, to select Travis Hunter who would not run the 40 at hss Pro Day or the Combine. Sammy Watkins ran a 4.43 at the Combine and 4.37 on his Pro Day. He weighed 23 lbs more than Travis Hunter who may or may not run a 4.43.
Still not an O-lineman or blocker in sight for Trevor Lawrence heading into 5 years in the league. A strong take, but IMHO this represents the beginning of the end for TL16 in Jacksonville. TL16 missed 8 of his last 8 games last season for injury. Still no protection.
The Jags have one of the very worst O-lines in pro football. No hard feelings to Travis Hunter, another gimmicky pick for Jags, and no real help for TL16.

His offensive film was not impressive. Tended to catch everything against his body. Rarely used just his hands or high pointed the ball. Don’t understand the trade up for that guy. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Why does it matter that he won the Heisman? He is a great player, but the Heisman has proven not to mean anything for the NFL.

If he focuses solely on DB then it’s a good pick. If he wants to continue to play both sides then it’s an awful pick. The kid will not dominate on both sides in the NFL. He could be a lock down corner if he chose to focus on that position. I don’t think he’s an elite WR. Also I agree. The Jags need OL and defensive players the most.

This is pretty much what I've heard and read across many sources. I know he's expressed wanting to keep playing both sides but I'd be super surprised if they allowed it.
My guess is they'll work him out on both sides to see which role he might thrive in and then he'll focus on that role primarily (my guess is DB might be his main spot with like 10 snaps a game at WR).

O-lineman has been a desperate need for Jacksonville even before Trevor was there. I don't understand that move to move up to sign Travis Hunter but I'm hoping Trevor wants to get out after this season and actually play for a team that wants to legitimately build something. You don't draft the best QB of that class and do nothing to build protection around him 5 whole seasons later.

I agree with you completely. Hunter maybe the 2nd best player in the draft but he is not what the Jaguars needed. Do not care for this pick.

I think he will play CB with a few choice plays at WR also.

As bad as Jacksonville’s oline is their defense is even worse, I’m looking at this pick as a DB that can be used in a few offensive formations.
Now I think Jacksonville gave up too much for him ; but I don’t hate the pick

But nobody ever mentions when he’s injured, and it’s the NFL so he will be injured, you lose a CB and a WR.

Nah, that is not how the Travis Hunter deal works.
T.Hunter will occupy only one roster spot. If he gets hurt, it’s not as if Jags lose two players on their roster.
Back to T.Hunter’s value.
If he hurts a hand / several fingers during practice, then he can’t play WR, but could still possible play CB with a bandaged hand, then he migh5 have 5he ‘hand capability’ to play CB at a high level.

The kid is a playmaker all around. I don't mind the pick. They can get solid OL with the next pick.

He's the best player in this draft and will play both ways with the potential to be all pro caliber at each, which would be unprecedented in the modern era. Did they pay a lot? Sure, but they got a lot as well and I'm pretty sure TL is pretty happy to get the best WR in this draft.

I would not say he is the best wr in the draft but he is certainly a playmaker on O. I think he will be much better on D in the nfl.

I would have traded down rather than up. The used the picks to fill lots of gaps. Offensive line, defensive line, corners, safeties, linebackers and at least 1 edge. Kind of everywhere other than QB and RB. The defense stopped nobody last year and never turned the ball over. Passers had a field day with the d backs - so I get the need for a lock down corner. They need to hit the oline hard in the rest of the draft. TL is a sitting duck back there.

The kid is a baller. He’s got more talent than most. His weight is a little concerning (see liver contusion on hit) but his skill level isn’t in question.
Too much is made of forty speed. Jerry Rice was notoriously slow at running the forty but had game speed off the charts.
Grady Jarrett was considered too small to make an impact on DL, how’d that work out?
Travis Hunter probably should have went number one overall. The kid is Deion reincarnated. Their weight is 3lbs different. I think Deion worked out pretty well.

I have to agree with you on this one.. a trade-up for Travis Hunter to do what, help out TL16 ? I just don't see it! TL16 needs OL protection , not some gimmicky player that will be a better DB in the NFL.....I honestly do not believe he will be a great , much less good WR in the NFL.. Go Tigers!!

I think it's great for the Jags. It'll be easier to be an every-down corner with some offensive packages than being an every down receiver with cornerback packages. So he helps a team that needed secondary help and can also add a dozen or so offensive plays where he will help stretch the defense and create opportunities for Etienne, Brian Thomas, and everyone else. It fills two immediate needs for the Jags. Now they just have to hammer the lines of scrimmage in the middle rounds because there's a ton of talent at those spots on day two.

Idk where you get your info about trades though, teams trade up for non-QBs almost every single year, and if you look at the list the they almost always turn into studs. I'm probably forgetting a few too.
2014 Buffalo traded up for Watkins 2014 New Orleans traded up for Brandin Cooks 2015 Chargers traded up for Melvin Gordon 2019 Giants traded up for Dexter Lawrence (although not a pick-swap) 2019 Raiders traded up for Josh Jacobs 2020 Dolphins traded up for Austin Jackson 2020 Vikings traded up for Justin Jefferson 2021 Dolphins traded up for Jaylen Waddle 2021 Eagles traded up for Devonta Smith 2023 Texans traded up for Will Anderson

T.Hunter size is not a problem nor is his speed
Apr 25, 2025, 9:38 PM
|
|
Josh Downs - UNC WR (3rd rounder) with 2 full NFL seasons under his belt. About 5’ 11” 180 lb. 72 receptions and 5 TDs last year.
Zay Flowers - Boston College WR (1st rounder). Small guy (maybe 5’ 10” 175 lb). Not fast like Deon Cain, but still plenty fast. Moves and hands like Antonio Williams, but faster than A.Williams.
Jordan Addison - Pitt / USC WR (1st rounder). Another small guy (maybe 5’ 11” 180 lb). Very similar to Zay Flowers, probably a bit faster than Zay as far as straight line speed.
xxxxxxx
Travis Hunter fits the mold of all three of these smaller WR NFL stars. Whether his hands and catch radius are good enough is the only (albeit a big) question.
