The final top 25 coaches poll and "mid-majors".....

Jan 8, 2013, 9:47 AM

It was interesting to see the following end up in the top 25....

Northern Illinois
Tulsa
San Jose State
Utah State

Along with Boise State occupying their usual spot, that's 5 teams from non-BCS schools in the final top 25. Is that more than usual? Seems like it.

Throw in teams like Northwestern and Vanderbilt as well, seems to be an unusual year.

From a conference perspective, the other ACC schools need to get their act together....no one expects them to be world-beaters, but there should at least be two other schools outside of Clemson and FSU in the top 25 in a given year (and that's a pretty minimal expectation), with a couple of more in the "others receiving votes".

Proud of the top 10 finish for the Tigers!

UNC and/or Miami might've had a chance

They still could have finished ranked in AP if.....

they would have won more games (see Ohio State for instance). They were probably the best teams after Clemson and FSU, but UNC lost games to Duke and Wake and Miami lost 5 games (Including one to UVA and they got absolutely destroyed by Kansas State and Notre Dame).
N.C. State probably had the best chance to do something, but they squandered it. Va. Tech had their worst year in a long time. GT wasn't very good. UVA has been recruiting well but it hasn't shown up on the field yet. I do think some of those teams will be better next season, but it will take a couple of years for those teams to gain respect from pollsters.
Not shedding tears for any of those teams, but I do think at some point a couple of them need to step it up if the ACC is going to be viable. And Clemson and FSU need to step it up in their rivalry games. Getting the bowl wins in the Orange and Chick Fil A (regardless of opponent) was at least a step in the right direction.

Hard to fault any of those 5 teams though. I didn't see Tulsa play, but the other four looked very good this year.

I agree....all deserved to be in....

seems like for many programs (particularly in the ACC), they need to look at this and say "why couldn't we at least crack the top 25?" or "why must we stink so bad at football?" and then attempt to fix it.
