The Fall of the NCAA was

the beginning of the downfall of college athletics. Someone (NCAA) needed to rule with an iron fist, so that regardless of the amount of money all teams were playing on a level field. My disdain with the NCAA was not that they were harsh, but because they did not treat every school equally. Eventually it bit them in the a** and they lost their ability to govern effectively ....... so here we are in the wild wild west! What's next?

NFL relaxing the attend college requirement

I don't know why they would let college sports take away their clout. The SEC and B1G are about to get so big that they whole market settles on the price and they'll find out that college students are not worth the $$$ given to professionals
just as it is with any job

Just wait until Jimmy Sexton and Associates starts to rep high profile college athletes. The screws will be turned. Imagine what TLaw or DW could have leveraged in a slice of the pie discussion.

DC isn't that far behind.
I agree with you. The NCAA became a bunch of money grabbing rules makers who played favorites. Legitimacy lost and chaos follows. Not sure what the end will look like.

Three things happened...
1
Aug 1, 2023, 9:48 AM
|
|
1 - Selective enforcement of their own rules.
2 - Not having the appetite or the financial resources to defend the lawsuits that either were and/or would have been filed by disgruntled student-athletes who didn't get their way.
3 - The NCAA had their hand out and schools realized they could buy their way out of trouble.

Absolutely correct. My daughter-in-law has an opportunity to go to the NCAA and work after serving in a pretty high up role at a power 5 athletic institution. This was during the UNC debacle. One of her friends who was already working there told her that the NCAA was afraid of UNC ..... same as they were of Kansas, LSU, and some of the other big dogs.

if you were running the NCAA you would probably have done the same. Caved to any 1 willing to chuck a bunch of high priced lawyers at you.
i'll add that you should spread some of the blame to coaches and administrators. college sports makes billions of dollars but most of that money goes right back to the "student" athlete in one way or another. So i could argue it isn't a "professional" business used to just make money.
It is hard to argue the "amateur" student athlete model when the coaches and administrators make more than their "professional" counter parts.

Nothing like Socialism and equality to fix everything. Where should they stop? Cap stadium size to 10,000 so everyone can sell out?

I was listening to Qualk's show yesterday afternoon and they were talking about how the universities are now catering to the big donors and seemed more interested in getting fewer fans with more money. Not sure that is completely correct, as they have always catered to the big money donors, but there may be some truth that it is getting worse.

The downfall of the NCAA was because of the Supreme Court decision of 1984.
