Not quite sure I get why there are post about needing Venables back. Don’t get me wrong, I would love for him to still be Coordinator here, but Wes is doing a really fantastic job.
If you were to blindly look at the numbers of this defense to one of Venables past defenses, you wouldn’t see much different.
Wes is having a fantastic year calling defense this year. The offense has honestly been more of a challenge to our own defense than opposing teams defenses have.
I get your upset and want somewhere to direct that anger, but putting it all on Goodwin is a complete misdirection.

That is the only reason he became DC. Dabo didn’t want to let BV take him.

Not seeing any posts on people wanting Wes gone and CBV back. It's nothing to do with defense. Almost all I've seen is wanting that energy and passion back... I can certainly understand what they're saying.

Our Def was down last year in Wes first year. He is having a fantastic year thus far. I was a little disappointed in the Duke game because it seemed like out LB were out of position and looked a little slow. Since that game, they have been lights out.

suddenly has the discipline to remain on the sidelines while coaching his new gig. Possibly the OU AD was not willing to burn an entire coaching position on providing him a safety harness, and let him get flagged a few times until he figured it out?

BV's not the DC at OU. He's leaving all of that up to Ted Roof now.

I’m sure he is coaching the coaches. Roof was brought in to run the BV style attacking defense. You saw the classic BV “high risk-high reward” D on display often yesterday. They created chaos for TN a lot but also gave up huge plays to the wide open TE and backs out of the backfield. It was classic BV D yesterday.
This was not the subject though. BV has found the discipline in his new HC gig to not need a get back handler.

I always thought that sideline show by BV was just that.......SHOW. If I had been his boss, I would have asked BV to stay inside the Coaches box on the sideline. If he didn't, I would ask him again. If he violated and got a penalty for the team, I would fine him and do it every time he violated it until he matured. That jumping out on the field by a grown man and requiring another grown man to hold you was the silliest, most immature thing I have ever witnessed and made BV look like a fool......which he is most definitely not.

We forget about that. His defense had been figured out, gave up to many big plays, were not set in time all were criticisms after losing some big games. I saw some of that same stuff yesterday in the Texas game and was thinking about how crazy upset people would be if he were still at Clemson and did that. People were upset with Wes last year because we lost recruits and had a down year. The DL was way down last year and it hurt us. Having the freshman and XT have made all the difference this season because the DB’s and LB’s are all the same guys with the exception of Barnes

it was wake - minus basically all their firepower from last year. gt owned them by 14 a couple weeks ago.
i would hope any clemson d would smack a team like that down. it wasn’t fsu or duke.

or not flip the field leaving the defense defending on the wrong side of the 50.
They played their arses off, it's a team game with at least 2 other phases, and the offense put the defense in peril numerous times.
Not sure why anyone would try to diminish the performance, it won the game.

So you lied about diminishing their effort? Is that what
Oct 8, 2023, 12:43 PM

you're saying.
Maybe you've spent too much time sword fighting with those pantaloon wearing swashbucklers in the lunge?
No good can come of it.
Clemson's defense throttled them with almost no help from Clemson's offense, in fact all I've offered put the defense in peril.
There is no transitive property in football, none.
And still 7th in the nation...

wake lost a lot of firepower. they have played zero teams. the players on clemson d played beautifully and i heart them.
the kid with headset on sidelines coaching em up? meh - we shall see. hopefully he learned from his mind numbing 3 man front against dook that took his lunch money and then gave him a wedgie.

of the truth comes out, which means we're finally getting some where.

I really don’t care what the numbers say, so stop reading now if that bothers you.
We WAY underperformed on defense last year with the talent we had. We use the rankings of stats to tell us how the team is performing, but the metrics aren’t accurate as everyone’s schedule is different. What I SAW last year was a tremendously disappointing defense. I see improvement this year, sure, and I’m cheering Wes and all the Tigers, but it’s still not what it was and there’s definitely something lost by not having Venebles on the sideline.

in the business on the sideline?
Well, yeah.
And the metrics are important, because most people are emotional, especially about sports, favorite team/player and far too many other things, which like the hard liquors clouds their judgement.

Wes is a smart kid. He listens. Which is more than you can say for some of the other coaches on the staff. He heard the outcries from fans and his boss about the soft defenses and he fixed it. The only thing Wake got yesterday was what Wes gave them when he softened up to burn clock. Wes is learning. He is growing up right before our eyes. Not there yet but much, much better!

BV was to Dabo what Erk Russell was to Vince Dooley
Oct 8, 2023, 5:14 PM
|
|
The motor, the intensity, the energy, the fire of the program. Both the defensive & offensive players fed and produced off that energy. Wes is a bookish tactician and a damm fine one. He is performing well and improving as he goes -- complimented by Eason's energy which the team needs.

I think Wes is doing well but he needs to keep bringing pressure. Every time he plays coverage and backs off the other team marches down the field and scores. I understand playing like this with a huge lead but we didn't have a huge lead this week.

The defense is playing well enough to win our games. The O is completely to blame for our troubles and Dabo's method for choosing his staff is the reason for that.
