TO REALLY DRIVE THE POINT HOME REGARDING THE FUTILITY OF BUYING PLAYERS

Colorado recruited 50 players from the portal to include some highly touted players. They spent more than $8 million on NIL adjustments only to win 4 games on the season. I sure wished Dabo could accomplish that... Said nobody ever.

We have a few good players. We have 85 good players that are being developed. FSU will lose to Clemson this season. They are loaded with portal players. UGA may lose to Clemson this season...

We need upgrades at certain spots and Dabo himself knows that; why else did he unsuccessful go after a handful of players in the portal? The narrative this year that we don't need portal players only started after we didn't get the guys we wanted.

You’d have to go way back to find a dozen bad snaps on FGs and extra points. Using that logic, the pros have never had a dropped snap?

The team collectively votes on 1 scholarship per year that gets awarded, not the coaches. Drew won that scholarship due to his work as holder, punt returner and occasional wide out.

UH, 30 TO 40%?, You must be talking about Coot U. 14% of our palyers went into the portal. Most for playing time. That will happen. All the exageration and hand wringing won't change the fact. Dabo would rather develop players then buy them. I agree a replacement here and there would be welcome. He has tried and will continue to, but as he says they got to want us too.

re-word clarification: 30-40% of a recruiting class "developed players" are transfering out each year.
we've averaged 8-11 transfers out each year...........when you ratio that with a typical 21-23 person recruiting class that's in the 30-40% range.
over a 4 year period that adds up when you're not replacing w/ others from portal and depending on HS players to fill the void.

Other elite teams are using the portal to cycle out guys that aren't as good as they thought they would be and then bring in proven players from other schools.
I'm an NOT advocating that Dabo use the portal to run guts off but the truth is other schools are doing it and its and advantage.

Amazing how someone can use numbers for a completely absurd narrative. It is and I state not 30 to 40% of any one recruiting calss leaving, and not even close to that number for scholarship players. Try some reality before bashing Dabo and his way of doing things.

But the bottom line is that we have to replace an extra 10% or more of our roster every year plus normal attrition.
They get replaced with freshmen or walk ons, who are generally not "developed".
Then our rivals take advantage of our development when they get out transfers.

Jul 24, 2024, 8:29 AM

|
you can use common sense (if you have any) and your eyes (if you can see) to realize that since the the PORTAL opened at the END of 2018 along with NIL becoming more prevelant the last several years our program/results on field have had a large dropoff/downturn.
-our talent is nowhere NEAR what it was -other teams/programs that we are FAR superior than have closed the gap largely due to the portal upgrades utilized for THEIR team.
NOBODY on this website has EVER said we need to portal in Colorado fashion......EVER. So what you say is completely false. However at the very least supplementing through the portal should help shore up several of the issues that have plagued our program over the last several years. Also realize that PORTAL/NIL is not the only answer either. Notice I said "SEVERAL" issues........coaching issues also need to be rectified. Contrary to what you and many others think not EVERYTHING Dabo touches turns to Gold........not in this era of CFB anyway.

if we are happy being a “young team” every year because we lose players to the portal but don’t replace them with experienced players.
But if we want to be the best we can be, and therefore be an elite program once again, contending for national championships, then we absolutely need to use the portal.
This is not complicated.

At a cost of $8.8M hardly worth it... My guess is that they won't do much better... For three seasons now, the majority of the nation has been drafting players from the portal at a steep cost. I'm willing to bet that they won't make the playoff. Clemson may make the playoff, Bama may make the playoff, and UGA may as well. They don't pull from the portal to build a roster. The players that transferred out of Clemson to play elsewhere were going to be replaced on the depth chart anyway.

Colorado spent zero on NIL. No university or college even has NIL dollars. It’s against ncaa rules. NIL can’t be facilitated by universities. Changes in august allow recommendations and setting up meetings. NIL is endorsement deals facilitated by third party collectives. No college paid any player.

You splittin’ hairs there dude. Not a good look for you. Everyone on this board knows what he means. 3rd parties act as proxies to the schools with athletics being the common denominator. How do you say that this or that program was “better than they would have been” without their portal players. Maybe Michigan? And where are they now after Hairball bought the Natty then left for another (likely unsuccessful) NFL stent ?

I don't think you build an entire program around the portal, which is what Colorado is trying to do, but adding a few in areas of need each season is an entirely different strategy. However I can't blame Dabo for utilizing our obviously not unlimited resources to retain our current high achievers instead of chasing the next big thing. Ideally we could do both but I don't think we can afford it.

Dabo fixed the O-Line and WR issues by hiring MATT LUKE. With a better O-Line, Cade will have more time to make better decisions and RB lanes will open up. This takes the pressure off of the passing game and allows for the Clemson offense to do what they do best which is create a pick your own poison scenario against opposing defenses.

Colorado went from one win to four wins. It is disingenuous to say '400% improvement'. There is not much difference between one win and four. To say that 'Every FBS conference champ used the portal' is also disingenuous. Pretty much EVERY team in FBS used the portal.

Interesting ON3 numbers. A quick scan looks like there are a few schools that found 4* players. The competition (and $$$ price) is pretty high. Not sure if Clemson has enough chips to play in that card game. I noticed how many lost more 3*s than gained 3*s. Question is...if you can't get 4*s and go after 3*s, are those 3*s in the portal better than the 3*s you know and recruited...and why did those 3*s go to the port-o-let anyway. Just curious thoughts.

Michigan needed the portal, we don't. With portal comes NIL packages and at Clemson they have a Top 10 NIL program. Clemson needed some coaching changes, and they were made. Currently, the starter and back up at each position for the current roster would be a starter at most schools. Sure, if Clemson has a bunch of players transfer out at the end of the season, and they have a poor performance in recruiting then I think Dabo goes to the portal. The biggest argument that everyone is missing is the fact that we haven't needed the portal because any transfers have been replaced either by depth on the roster or from a high school recruit.

We lost 12 football athletes to the portal just since the bowl game. Virtually all of them were either former starters or valuable backups for us.
Our QB room is upside down. Pest an is the best QB on the roster, but we may not see him until garbage time against El Cid.
Offensive line - suspect at best.
Defense - lots of new faces.
Kicker??? Yeah, question mark.
I hope Clemson wins every game, but we realistically could start 0-3 this season.
