Kirk Herbstreit to Tony Elliott haters: "Shut up"
It's just not clicked yet. The Clemson offense has not looked like itself through four games this season as the team has had a dismal ACC-worst 295.5 yards a game of total offense. That is rough for a team that consistently dominated with a balanced attack with playmakers making explosive plays duri Read Update » |

When does it cease being an "early season" issue?
That will be Kirk's next statement after the BC game - that we're mid-season and should be past all that by now. He's just setting up his own narrative.

When he completely sold out to promote Georgia moving up after losing to Alabama in the SEC title game and get into the playoff i lost respect for him.
Just completely shilled out his opinion for the sake of “debate”.

I said it back then, Herbstreit was pushing the company narrative for expansion. More games. More money.

Seriously, the only thing I've heard is....clearly Scott was the mastermind behind it, Trevor and Etienne were just good enough to mask how bad Elliott really is, but it even showed a few time the last couple years. He's def part of the problem, with his vanilla/Spring game playbook.

We have the 3rd most talented roster in CFB, but the offense is one the worst in the nation.
TE makes 2 million a year. Sorry, but deserves to be criticized.

Exactly. We aren’t matching or even coming close to our rosters ability, that’s the core issue. You can still lose a uga game heck you can still get upset by an ncst. But the nature of what we are seeing and the statistics all point to something seriously wrong with development or preparation or schemes or some combination of all three. Something is seriously wrong aside from “DJU just isn’t mobile” or “the OL can’t block anyone”, well WHY can’t they block anyone? Tons of teams do more with less.

Most of you know that I've been saying that our QB talent has been masking TE's woe's for a few years, plus I've said that when Jeff Scott left, that we would find out just how good or bad Tony was at scheming the plays by himself without Jeff's input. TE is the only OC that I've ever seen that would continue to run the ball straight into the teeth of the D on 1st down just about every time we would make a 1st down.
I can't count how many times I've said that our offense only had 2 downs to make a 1st down, bc Tony would waste the 1st down running the ball straight into the strength of every defense our team faced. He don't have DW4 or Trevor behind center any longer, and he has to change what he does on 1st down, and start mixing the plays up bc, even the fans in the stands, and on TV know exactly what was coming on 1st and 10, a run into the strength of the opposing defenses come H&11 or high water, and after the game he would say that he was trying to keep a balanced offense. Sorry, but it isn't a balanced offense when you get lucky once or twice a game running the ball in the strength of a defense!!!

I don’t think Herbstrreit ought to insult Clemson fans. He and others only mention Elliott as the reason for Clemson’s success for the past few years. They underestimate Jeff Scott’s contribution to the offense and to Elliott. It always starts in the trenches and they have neglected to recruit well or they’re not developing the OL.

The last thing I want to hear is an Ohio State alumni smart axx ...Is to tell me anything. Kirk...our offense SUCKS BUTTERMILK... Who is the offensive coach? Tony Elliott..Hope your kids are enjoying a free ride at Clemson on tax money I have been paying for 40 years. I say ....MAYBE...let’s see how the season goes..Then decide whether to keep him or offer the job to WILLIE KORN, another South Carolinian. Assistant coaches are a dime a dozen if you have a GREAT head coach...ASK SABAN.

While I feel your pain, I'm pretty sure that neither of his boys have been on scholarship. I know that neither had one when they came, and one has left, and I have never seen where the one who stayed ever got assistance. Now, I get his comments, but I don't really agree with him. Likewise, I can't say how much Jeff Scott played a factor in play selection or calling`, but it is my understanding that TE called the plays. Did others have input? Probably, but I'd say the QB skill sets prior to DJ were much better, and that's the big difference. Also, it probably isn't just TE and the play calling. Our OL isn't very good at all, either. IMO, that's the biggest problem this team has, and it's not a new problem. I just wonder how we fix it, or if we even can this year? Sad to see us struggle. Tough to watch!

I don't hv to the time nor care but do you think he would dare say or has said that to OSU at anytime? Perhaps he cares now bc his kid went to or goes to Clemson and thus he now has more emos about Clemson fan base and tell them how to think and act just like a Disney EE would and get paid.

I agree too.
This whole Tony Elliot "witch hunt" was spawned by social media idiots.
Stop and think for a minute; remember the pass to Renfro that won the Natty?
Remember the way we dominated Bama on January 9, 2017?
And last year's points scored against various teams: 49, 73, 47, 42, 45...
Tony Elliot didn't forget how to call plays and he didn't forget how to win.
Once The Tigers dominate a team, all of these witch hunters will disappear.

This was with Trevor and DW. Many of us have complained about his calling for several years. You RARELY see Clemson receivers open. It is the QB throwing into a tight window or throwing a 50/50 ball. NC State’s receivers were pretty open in the short game, but we cannot figure out how to scheme that way. Tony needs to adapt or move on. Here is what I need to see from him.
1. You have to adapt this offense to DJ. He is not fast enough to cause concern in the running game so there is not a true RPO there. Quick hitting runs and passes. Not slow developing.
2. More crossing routes. More rub routes. More TE in the passing game. More downfield passes. Gotta take some shots as I am not sure we can sustain long drives.
3. Taylor taking snaps in the slot.
4. More motion to get receivers open or jet sweeps.
5. Coach receivers to sit in the open spots of the zones.
6. Use tempo to help the run game. Ie catch defenses out of alignment etc. and wear the defense down.
Caldwell and the oline are a completely different issue that we are going to have to work around this year. Hopefully this issue mute point after years of underperformance from this group.
I would love to see Tony adapt and he must for the sake of this program. He deserves the season to correct things, but changes have to happen.

Add this:
Will Taylor taking some QB snaps. Give DJU time to sit, watch, learn, and calm down. Give the D a new, different look.

Tony Elliott didn't call the DW to Renfro pass play. He called something different, probably a bubble screen and Jeff Scott called that play and Dabo went with it. Based on the plays I've seen run this year I'm not sure TE could come up with a play like that.

Once again you just want to blame the players. “The game is just moving too fast for poor young DJ” or “the O line isn’t good” well WHY ARE THEY NOT GOOD? They have the talent. Other teams do a lot more with much less. DJ didn’t just sit out all of last year then just show up for camp this summer. Hell I can tell you every play the offense is going to run before they do it then you tell me it’s fine play calling? Also he forgets TE hasn’t been solo OC but for the last few years (not when we were winning National Championships). I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

It looks to me like they put the Georgia game in DJ's hands and he was and still is a bit shellshocked by a tremendous Georgia defense...Clemson should've rum the ball more with their running backs to keep some of the heat off him against Georgia as well as the other games...Not only has Clemson given very few carries to the running backs, they also failed to give carries to their established veteran RB Lynn J Dixon. Instead, they give the RB carries to an 18 yr old freshman who is more likely to get injured and hasn't had enough game time to prove he can handle the load yet...imo they should've ran their veteran RB Dixon 15-20 times a games and given the other guys 5-10 carries each to break them in & also help break in DJ who is a starter for the first time as a sophomore. It's frustrating to see the such a good defense on the field the whole game because the offense can't put drives together...The added stress on the defense has prob helped lead to some of the injuries sustained...A commitment to the run would help keep the defense fresher because running chews up clock and helps with ball control...

That’s that’s quite rich and way too much.
Please put the out-dated device in your hand down.
Rum is what you apparently use to ignore your problems, research Dixon and see if he’s a fella you’d like living in your house. My guess is he would be, neither knows what the #### they’re mad about or doing.

Elliott is still the same guy we have been winning championships with every Year. I would like to see how the backup handles these situations but apparently the coaches are completely sold on DJ. The scheme has been working GREAT for years. It worked while probably the 3 best QBs in CU history were at the helm. The scheme is NOT working with the current QB, who is not tracking towards becoming a top 5 qb in CU history currently (and hopefully that will change).
So yeah, the scheme is one of the major current problems. An OC worth his salt will adjust the scheme for the QB.
Right now DJ is running the same offense a #1 NFL draft pick ran, and unfortunately it ain't working.
Lazy comments, Herby. Lazy.

I’ve been a member of this board since its inception 20+ years ago. It was a great venue back in the day. Now I just read the news items for information that isn’t otherwise available. Haven’t posted for a long time because I long ago identified the lunacy of far too many “keyboard experts” who likely wouldn’t recognize sh*t from shinola. To those of you that fall in that category, wear the shoes……they fit. You’re entitled to your opinion, but your stupidity is infinite.
I might post again in another 5 or 6 years……just trying to be helpful. Go Tigers!! ????????

Then it’s not REAL. I don’t think anyone Hates Elliott. I remember when he played, love the man he has become and actually would like for him to stay on staff. But he needs help from a offensive genius. He isn’t one. And I see a fear of changing personal, because their afraid he’ll transfer. What I know is every time I’ve seen TP , he has out played DJ. Remember the best player isn’t always the one with the most stars. GO TIGERS!!!

We have had plenty of people open, DJ just can't find them. It's not TE's fault. I don't care what is going on between DJ's ears....next man up if he can't cut it. Sick of everyone blaming Elliot for a QB that has looked like a deer in headlights all season.
