I have a freshman son playing football at the NAIA level. The coaches have a belief Freshman don't play because they aren't ready. The team has no depth and since younger kids don't play the team doesn't improve.
As a parent I go to the games in hopes to see my kid play. I have yet to see him dressed on the sidelines because they don't play freshman. This school is 13 hours away. Every Friday we leave the upstate and we fly, drive through the night, use up our vacation just at the thought of seeing our kid fullfill his dream of playing. Just one play. Just one snap. Just one opportunity.
Many of those kids we saw play yesterday have parents who have watched their kids from 8 years old play the game they love. They watched their kid earn the right to dress at one of the premier universities this great country has. They travel in from all over the country in case their kid gets in for that one play. Clemson University is known for playing 100 kids a game if possible. I know watching the 4th string defense give up a few touchdowns hurts some feelings on here because you think we have to win by 50 to make it look good. The narrative in college football has changed. The ACC champion is in no matter what.
This morning there are parents traveling home smiling because their kid got to play yesterday.... on national TV..... maybe had their names called out. It might not have been 56-3 but I'm ok with that
I would give anything to see my son play one down this year. Thank you Dabo for giving some parents that opportunity yesterday.

I think Dabo unloading the roster goes along when he and others say “the Clemson football program’s atmosphere and culture is about family” …
For those that want to pound their chest with pride and say Clemson is different …well this is why it’s different. Many of those prideful individuals are most likely the complainers today. Can’t have it both ways.

I disagree on the at large. IF and that is if we blow the doors off the ACC teams, beat SC in a controlling manner, then lose a close game to an undefeated or 1 loss Miami team, I could see us getting an at large.
If the committee, is not watching all these games in their entirety to understand why 30 plus points have been given up in the last 2 games by the defense, then we have major issues.

loser mentality. We will beat miami and leave no doubt. Why assume we will lose? We will win, and if we dont win we dont deserve to make playoff and we will not

They are definitely aware. Our jumps in the Coaches and AP polls and inclusion now in a majority of CFP projections are a result of us manhandling NC State with our dudes, then practice mode from there.

Great post. I love the way Dabo plays a bunch of players when he can. I sat in the stands for the entire game and I know not one player on the roster. Why? To support the players on the field. Go tigers.

Great post!!!!! Those kids, all of them are part of the team, they do the work, they prepare the starters, they get hurt, etc…. It doesn’t matter the way others think…. They earn that right to play by showing up, let them have their day as well………

Personally, I think that Dabo should empty the bench with scholarship players in any/all blowout games within the last 5 minutes of 3d quarter and all of the 4th quarter. But he should leave all starters and #1 backups in so they can get that live game action bc that helps them learn their teammates and what they can expect from them during game time action.
All starters and their backups should play no less than 40 minutes of the game clock even in blowout games, then give the last 20 minutes of the game clock to the players that practices really hard every week and pushing themselves at practice really hard to try and get themselves prepared whenever they are called on for whatever reason, mop up duty or we really need them. Those would be the players that I would give the last 20 minutes of the game clock to once we had the game in hand...

I agree. We have too many Tiger “fans” that know more than the coaches and complain about everything.

Well said and I have been there with you. Fortunately, my son's coach would play freshmen when they earned it and it was a thrill for him and me to see the first play and many more to come.

That's a pretty small "crowd".

The concern isn't playing the backups. It's how much the quality of play dropped off from the starters to the backups.
Depth is clearly an issue for the defense.
Compare that to the depth that many of the top 10 teams have in defense.
Texas, Ohio State, and Bama, for example.
Another example is Tennessee. Their D dominated Oklahoma on the road last night.
They rotated 12 defensive linemen in the heat and humidity in Norman.
Twelve!!!
Say what you want s out that, hut I wish we had that kind of quality depth.
Losing the D line commits doesn't move the needle to get us there.

I agree, there was a 'taper' affect BUT
Getting those 3rd and 4th level players real PT and tape to coach from certainly isn't a bad thing to grow them and improve that depth, hat-tip Dabo.

I totally agree....give 'em reps! Would these same people rather have a tight game where we sweat it out and get no opportunity for the freshmen to grow?

From a parent of an athlete, you truly understand what Saturday meant to so many people. The players get to play the sport they practice day in and day out, their parents get to see them play the game they love and have played for years. It is amazing experience and as you stated, the pride and happiness in their hearts is something you cannot measure, no way.
Well done, very well done.

Agreed!
Even it is just a few plays. You want your Child to have that experience. They have worked their butts off as well as anyone else. Someone else is currently bigger, faster, stronger or more knowledgeable so they get to play more. But, in a blow out play everybody.
The other thing: "most of those people complaining were upset with Dabo and the Coaching Staff when Peter Woods went out in the App State game. I heard; why is he even in there when the game is decided. And several other complaints about it. As soon as a starter is hurt in a game that's decided - people will immediately turn on the same staff that is giving those young players a chance"!
My thing is: "develop your depth in a game"! DJU was and is apparently an amazing practice player; Bryce Young same thing. But, when they get to the game - they don't show up all the time. Get those young players reps; see what they can do. Get some video on them so you can find out what their weaknesses are. Big thing about them being exposed ya'll is - "IT GRABS THEIR ATTENTION NEXT TIME THE COACHES OR OLDER PLAYERS ARE TALKING"! Why? Because, they do not want to be exposed in front of 81,500 again! It's a good thing in some ways they got exposed - now everything all those little things - make more sense!

Let's assume the offense is better than it was last year. (I don't believe that is an assumption) How did that happen? It's basically the same team. A change in coaches. A few men matured. But what hasn't changed is the willingness of 2nd and 3rd string guys to push their 1st string teammates in the spring, summer and fall. What better reason is there to get those who sacrificed so much some PT? My Dad coached me coming up. Day 1 he promised parents 2 things. 1st- he would be as tough or tougher on his son (me) than he would be with anyone else's kid. 2nd- EVERYONE would get a chance to run the ball. No matter what. Of course we are not talking about Div-1 Little ole Clemson here, but the dedication to the less fortunate or underclassmen is the exactly the same. Thanks you CDS, you are the man!!!

I’m glad Dabo plays a lot of guys. It’s great for building depth and morale.
These guys work their tails off. Let them play!
