South Carolina made the universal “T” sign on the kickoff. It’s universally known to let players know to let up, to avoid collisions. South Carolina made it, then ran the trick play. That’s how you get people hurt. That’s why he made the gesture. It had nothing to do with substitutions.
Illegal? No. Unethical? Yes.

.... but when the refs let the play go, I assumed I didn't see it. I was under the impression it was a rule, since everybody does it.
I think the confusion is because the announcers totally blew it. They were the ones who said Bielema was taunting Beamer for late substitutions.
Typical lazy announcing by the commentators. They have a sideline reporter. How hard is it for him or her to go to someone (other than Bielema) on the sideline and ask, "What was Bret so upset about?" They do it all the time when they are trying to get info on injuries and other things.
Bret made it very clear after the game what he was ticked off about. It had nothing to do with substitutions.

Seems like a BS play to me!! U know good & well every time kickoff coverage guys see that sign, they are slowing down & disengaging from the play!!

they totally jumped on his rear on their misassumption and created an entirely false narrative...beamer got just what he deserved from the illinois coach but not from the tv announcers...

Beamer is a big whiny baby. Bielema knew he wasn't going to actually do anything but pretend to run at him and then cry to the media after the game, so he challenged him.

because...well...I really just don't care enough about them to waste my time, but the common denominator in the few I have seen is a petulant Baby Beamer incessantly whining, crying, and complaining to the officials. He's almost as bad, if not worse, than Dave Doeren.

Usc with the kickoff stuff and Illinois with the fake injury. Beamer was pissed about the fake injuries and Bielema was pissed with the Fake "T" sign. So when Beamer was complaining about the fake injury, Bielema was pointing out to him that they did a similar "unethical" thing, as to say shut up.

What Bielema did was nothing to cause baby Beamer to blow a gasket. He totally embarrassed himself and the school he represents on national TV. I expect Beamer to address the media and try to give a positive explanation so he doesn't look so bad. He already threw his player under the bus.

you also don't want to create an atmosphere where a legitimately injured player hides it because they don't want to come off the field for an entire series. I don't know where the right balance is but I think it's a tough call. Too bad we can't just count on these coaches to have their players play to the true spirit of sportsmanship.

Beamer cried about getting called for Disconcerting signals on defense but then tried to work a loophole on the trick play. I was down on Beliema at first but now that it came out, Bert had every right to call out Beamer on this.
I knew Shane and his wife when he was an assistant for Spurrier, and I liked him. He is kind of a crybaby now that he is the HC. He invites stuff like Bert trolling him. Coots will never get over the hump with Beamer unless he matures a little. I don’t want them to get over the hump so I hope he doesn’t.
Perhaps they got robbed in the LSU game because the refs think he is a whiny baby?

I think if they hadn’t stopped and stood in the endzone for a second, along with making the “t” move, it could’ve been a little easier to swallow as well.
