Wasnt come and take it on here pontificating about googling Texas relevance?

The University of Texas used to be considered college football's most elite program. The school has taken home nine National Championships. But after the departure of Mac Brown in 2013, the Longhorns have been almost unrecognizable. The team has managed to accumulate just one double digit win season over the past decade. Despite the struggles on the field, we’ve had plenty of conversations as to if Texas is truly back. The team's lone double digit win season this decade ended in a Sugar Bowl victory. That led quarterback Sam Ehlinger to announce Texas' return to College Football royalty while lifting the trophy. The team hasn’t eclipsed 8 wins since. But the Longhorns may finally have a chance to solidify the team's No. 3 ranking this weekend. After upsetting Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide, Oklahoma is the next team on the schedule. The Sooners impressive start has launched them to No. 12 in the country. Quarterback Dylan Gabriel looks like a legit dual threat, and head coach Brent Venables has done some excellent work on the defensive side of the football. And with expectations in Austin growing, this weekend's matchup could be the perfect measuring stick for one of college football's most historic programs.…

no idea why this loser hangs out on our board besides trying to be around greatness and hopefully absorb some by osmosis? Oh well, hopefully we play Texas on a bowl and shut that loser up and away from our board.

Which hasnt mattered but is beginning to matter and will likely matter more down the road given NIL and free agency.

Not that Texas folks really worry or know about Clemson beyond Dabo and the occasional Texas-based bowl game.

Shoot, until I met my wife, I honestly thought Auburn was in Georgia, Clemson was in Alabama and a Gamecock was NC State's mascot.

It just never mattered.

Clemson's got a nice vibe and a fairly decent stadium as ACC programs go. It's a fun way to spend several Saturdays in the fall and the dern tickets and parking are free. When in Rome.

But here's the thing: none really over-identify with the thing.

Texas was never the most elite college football program

1

Oct 6, 2023, 7:30 PM

In fact they have this reputation of being a college football blue blood and they are but their history is not as strong as you would think.

They only have 4 national titles and once since 1971. They had strong decades in the 60s, 70s and 00s but had multiple lengthy down periods in the 80s, 90s and since 2010 now.

all hat, no cattle, is what youre saying.

But you're in over your head. We've won more nattys than alot of programs. Including Clemson.

It is what it is.

It may kinda stick in your bonnet a little and Im sorry it stings. But it's still four, and four's still more than three and so's five which is a distinct possibility should we manage to not pull up lame tomorrow and lose, say, 28-7 to an inferior.

Otherwise, we got a pretty straight shot at the CFP if we can hold on and win out.

Not a mayo bath in sight.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: In other words, Texas football is

1

Oct 7, 2023, 9:04 AM

The Mayo bath gave it away, Usuck fans know a lot about the mayo bath. I don't count titles and wins if it happen before I was born so I feel pretty good you may have been alive for 1 in Texas.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Huh,

2

Oct 7, 2023, 9:25 AM

I dont understand how a mayo bath reference carries that kind of significance. If I were a Gamecock, I'd say so. I wouldnt pretend not to be one. But Im not.

I am a Longhorn tho and was around for ... (checking) ... (stand by) ... two of Texas' four official nattys. They have nine on the books but who's counting?

Anyway, you have a weird approach to history with your "didnt exist when it happened so mustve not happened" thing.

I wasnt around for VE day. Does it mean I shouldnt count it and thus go and dust off my conversational German?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Huh,

Oct 7, 2023, 10:37 AM

When it comes to sports I do not celebrate the fact CU did something in 1911 or whatever came before 1962. I think the one thing most college football fans can agree on is that it was only a matter of time before Texas, Usc and a couple of others rose to the top. We all know that Texas and some other big city schools will have more NIL money and get to the top and stay. I can almost bet that this team doesn't play in the mayo bowl because we will either win out or possibly get beat one more time or this team will be like a Mack Brown coached team and fall apart and we will end up in the pinstripe bowl.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, it's true.

1

Oct 7, 2023, 1:09 PM

Big money programs will rule the landscape and I hate what it's become.

I dont really care what UT did before today, much less 100 years ago. But that's what separates Texas fans from many others. We dont live on past achievements.

Just win, baby.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gosh only four?

2

Oct 6, 2023, 11:13 PM [ in reply to Texas was never the most elite college football program ]

Isnt that one more than three?
Kinda feels like y'all are still riding in our dregs then, don't it?

I worry y'all wont get to four before we get to five. Then what'll we have to compare and argue over?

Baseball titles?
Nope. Y'all kinda light in that area.
Basketball? Hehe. Yeah. We're both sucking air there although we have enjoyed a few more tourney berths than y'all.
Volleyb-...naw. We win that one.
Swimming? Does Clemson swim? Chalk it Horns.
Golf? Yikes. We trump that one, too.

Man. It's a really short conversation, come to think of it.

Y'all should embrace the charm and uniqueness of the Clemson brand. It's not a championship machine like UT. It has panache and win y'all win it's extra special. Like when Rudy gets the sack.

pontificating about Texas relevance?

2

Oct 6, 2023, 8:12 PM

Over the course of football history, Texas has been a Blue Blood team due to having a lot of money. Like all teams, they have been up and down, but to say they have not been one of the best is silly.

The QB they have now (Ewers) is very good and has already made more $$ from OHS and Texas than many pros make. He is very good.

Texas is very likely to make the CFP this season.

I see no reason to hate on TEXAS. I would rather see them in the CFP than UGA or a Big10 team.

I do not loathe all Aggies. Lots of Aggies in the family and they are great.

Of course my head bows and hand over heart
for the good Clemson man in your lineage who did not come home.

Our family sent a couple of Clemson '39 men into Normandy and on across Europe. They came home but left alot of themselves over there.

aTm with its solid ROTC tradition is not unlike Clemson in that regard. It is about the only Texas school to which I'd send my out-of-state dollars should my kids express and interest.

My alma mater, OTOH, has veered too far off-course in some key areas.

But to football, I dont think Clemson'll be sniffing the top 10 anytime soon so I'd take that top-4 bet.

Texas has alot to prove and not alot of credibility outside of Texas. And thats understandable given our long and fraught dry spell.

Again...I hate to repeat myself...but I married well and have enjoyed many great Clemson moments because of it.

Its been fun watching my loved ones enjoy them, too, given their enormous commitment to the school and athletics program.

I particularly enjoyed the ND beatdown in Dallas. Maybe enjoyed it more than the Bama beatdown that followed given it was in my beloved Cowboys stadium.

I look forward to hopefully enjoying watching my Horns in a natty game in the near future although I know how hard it is to get there and I doubt it would involve Clemson if we did.
