Texas Defense

There’s a lot being made about Texas’ Defense.

Here’s something I found interesting..

Texas has gone up against just 3 offenses ranked inside the top 50.
5 of the 12 offenses they’ve faced don’t even crack the top 100.

Colorado St - 73
Michigan - 128
UTSA - 17
ULMonroe - 126
Miss St - 78
Okla - 121
UGA - 47
Vandy - 123
Florida - 81
Arkansas - 13
Kentucky- 114
A&M - 52

Not saying they’re not talented because they’ve obviously recruited well and have talent on that side of the ball but acting like they’re the second coming of the Steel Curtain back in the day is crazy.

I think Clemson can move the ball on them. 🤷🏻‍♂️

That’s the narrative I heard most this year was that they didn’t play a “real SEC schedule” which just sounds dumb.

But you can’t deny the fact that their Defense hasn’t truly been challenged by an offense that can match their talent level yet.

UGA barely has a top 50 offense.

They also played the entire 2nd half with a backup QB who hadn’t played meaningful reps all year.

This is an uneducated take.

How tone deaf can you possibly be? Uga hung 34 points on us to start the season and now you're arguing their offense is mediocre... well what does that say about Clemson?

Right?! It’s almost like the defense got gassed from being on the field all game?!

Clemson is a different team than that first game of the season.

It also helps that Texas doesn’t have 7 months to prep for Clemson like Kirby had.

Other Texas football team news - Clemson might actually have a better kicking game than Texas. Both punting and kicking.

The stats seem to bare that out. Additionally, my son-in- law is a Longhorn (I know, I know, it’s fine, born and raised in Texas) and he is exceedingly unenthusiastic about UT’s punter and kicker.

I think it was more a comment about how UTSA was the 2nd best offense Texas played all year.

Not a comment about who the opponent actually was.

Okay I'm back. They're only ranked so high because they'll put up a ton of yards. But scoring wise, they're not great. Possibly turnovers or penalties. (I didn't wanna dig too deep into an average team)

Clemson gained 420 yards of offense vs SCar, over 100 yds more than they average giving up. Only gave up 1 sack against them when they’re 3rd in the nation at sacking the QB. It was untimely TOs and a failed 4th down in the redzone that changed that game.

Vs SMU, the offense played mistake free football, took advantage of opportunities and put 34 points on the board.

Acting like the offense wasn’t effective in either of those games is just being ignorant for the sake of being argumentative.

I def think we can win but we did all just watch our offense struggle to get a first down for the better part of three quarters against SMU, so the idea that Texas can't shut us down seems bit optimistic.

Our offense has struggled for long stretches against SMU (final 40-45 minutes), South Carolina (final 25 minutes in particular), Pitt (entire 2nd half), VT (entire 1st half), and Louisville (the entire time until the last 10 minutes of garbage time when we were down 19). Not to mention what Georgia did to us in Atlanta.

Are we going to be able to run the ball at all against the Texas front? I just don't really have a lot of faith in our offense putting in an entire 60 minutes of good ball. Best case scenario is that we get some good fortune early in the game like we did against SMU and score on some short fields. With an early lead Texas might start feeling the pressure and choke.

Doesn’t this kind of lend credence to what Dabo has said about Clemsons best ball being in front of them?

Clemson has yet to put together a full 4 Qtrs of football and is still ACC Champ and in the playoffs.

Won’t argue against the fact that our offense has seemed to sputter for stretches but looking at the silver lining, they’ve been pretty effective up to this point.

If Clemson actually starts playing 4 Qtr football, they can compete with anyone.

Clemson gave UGA 3 1/2 Qtrs of fits, all the while playing one dimensional football. Not crazy to think that if they get clicking, there isn’t anyone they can’t beat.

Because Sammy Brown is without a doubt the best tackler on the defense.

Why risk injury to your most effective defensive player, all for a hypothetical spark?

Never insinuated that Texas couldn’t shut us down.
Was just pointing out the fact that Texas hasn’t faced a prolific offense all year.
The argument could be made that Clemson will be the best offense they’ve played all year.
I do think for a fact Clemson will be the most prolific passing attack they’ve faced all year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

All of the opponent adjusted metrics I've seem have them top 3

They are rated higher than Georgia although i think Georgia has a top 5 defense when it decides to show up.

At any rate, Texas will be the best defense we've faced all year.

Although they are an SEC team, there’s a very reasonable argument that haven’t beaten a team as good as Clemson this season. Their defensive numbers are also inflated by that schedule.

2025 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The key is the Texas D is supposedly #1 vs the pass, but...

most their schedule was against very weak passing teams. Many of their opponents threw for less than 2,000 yards for the season, some were barely above 1000 yards passing for the season, i.e. Michigan. One of the best passing team they played was Florida, but Lagway and the backup were out that game. Texas played against the 3rd stringer.

Comparatively, Cade has thrown for 3,700 yards. Other than UGA, Texas hasn't seen a passing team as prolific as Clemson.
