Terms of new USuC WR coach contract

I did a day of freelance work for the Cawks a few years ago. Had to wear the polo and all. It was the worst day of many bad days in my life, but the money was good. Nevertheless, I couldn't imagine signing a contract with them. Here are the terms of Mike Furrey's deal. For those who are saying it's a bad career move since Shane the Cheerleader won't be around long, $425,000 a year beats the $60-95k that was his estimated annual salary as Limestone's HFC.

So he will make $425k/ year. Pretty straight forward. 😉

You mean you don't think they'll make the SECCG or CFP???
It's a straightforward $425K per year unless Shane gets canned after this season, then he'll be due all of it if he doesn't coach anywhere in 2025. I could get paid $425K to vacation for a year and not be sad about it!

I would figure expectations for position coaches are pretty low there. Easy money!

OK, so 3A and 3B are moot, never happen.
#6 was left off. But pretty sure it was...'Don't even look at Georgia on a map'...

I guarantee he read that part and thought to himself, “oh well… it’s still enough even without those bonuses.”

Wow! Only $60-95K as HC at Limestone? I know several HS coaches who make way more than that.

Hard to know precisely what he is getting since Limestone is a private university, but looking at other states' head football coaches' salaries at Division II schools I found a few: $97K, $108K, $116K, $125K and $130K (two different states surveyed, dollar figures rounded up)
So Furrey may have been making $100 grand but I doubt he's at the higher end of the salaries I listed. I just can't imagine Limestone, despite high private tuition, being a place where his salary would be an outlier of those mentioned. They were skimping on personnel with the head basketball coach serving as the athletic director in the 00s. I know what they were paying the position I held at another school, and it was nominal, lower than what I was earning.
My guess is that Furrey's base salary was $90-95K with some incentives for winning the conference, playoff appearances, games won in playoffs, etc.
If you think those salaries are low, you should see what the D2-and-under assistants are making. Schools will frequently hire a football assistant coach and then find other work on campus (event management for other sports, security, strength & conditioning, study hall monitor, teaching assistant...I know a place that hired assistant basketball coaches and gave them the head coach positions for cross country) to supplement him. At those levels, it's truly love for the game that drives them 'cause it sure ain't the salary. The dream is always to "making it big" and "climbing that ladder", and truly this is a bit of a ladder climb for Furrey. You never know if Shane will get canned mid-year, and they look for an interim among the current staff...who's got HC experience? "I DO, I DO!!!" There's your big break!

A 2 year contract does not sound very promising. I would have never signed that deal. He will be looking for another job real soon.

If I were offered $850K to do something for two years, I'd take it and manage my earnings well and be set for life. He coached at Limestone, left for the pros, came back to Limestone and is leaving for USC. Seems like to me he can come back when they have a vacancy. As long as he doesn't royally screw up, he should be a candidate for at least a coordinator position at a D2 or even FCS program after Shane & staff get fired.

Pretty routine, typical contract.
Nothing unusual about it.
Nice raise for a coach. Not sure he needs the money since he earned some millions in the NFL. But, you pay them the going rate and this is market rate.
2 coaches at South Carolina from last season landed head jobs for this coming season.
Every assistant wants to make good money, and have a chance to land a bigger job if the right one comes along.

I like how they had to put in a clause that he owes them the full value of the contract if he quits in the first few months. I guess that’s the only way they can retain coaches over there…they keep leaving once they get inside the walls.

LOL at his incentives, at least one of them. $50,000 extra if they WIN the SEC.

They could have added a Million for first C.ock WR coach on the moon, would have been equally achievable under Shane-o-Matic.
