While I seriously doubt they'd do so, it is an interesting topic for conversation.

to have to deal with. A sort of indictment on the blatant favoritism afforded to certain conferences.

If they do that, the playoff committee should consider that a "loss" when

If they skeered, they just need to admit it.

I think the committee needs to set a precedent here

and show that they will not punish teams for losing in conference title games. The alternative may lead to schools pushing to eliminate conference title games. Since conference title games = money I would imagine most parties involved would want to avoid that scenario.
As for SMU opting out, I'm assuming they would be punished pretty severely. The ACC is contractually obligated to have a title game. I assume they would have to replace SMU with Miami, and then SMU would be made an example and handed a pretty severe punishment. I don't know what the conference is allowed to do to them, but i assume they would be left out of the CFP since this whole business is really about money and a team opting out of a conference title game jeopardizes that.

Link to any SMU people actually saying this?
SMU would have a lot to lose if they opt out. Sadly for the ACCCG , the committee is going to do an “eye test” I believe. If we blow them out or something I could see the committee using it as an excuse to get another SEC team.
A close lose probably still gets them in.

This is NOT on the table for this year and the chances are less than 1%. This could be an issue in the future.

I personally wish they would. Something this drastic really needs to happen or we are just going to continue to get played by espn and the sec.
DRad and Jim P sending those “we are disappointed” statements is weak as ####.

What does that mean for the game? Does Clemson just get crowned Champion on the spot?
Ngl I would be pissed off if SMU opted out 😂

The theory is...
1

Clemson is crowned the ACC Champion and the SMU metrics wouldn't change so teams currently ranked below them wouldn't be elevated above them effectively securing a spot for both Clemson and SMU in the CFP.
It would also be a great way to give a giant middle finger salute to both ESPN and the SEC.

If they get their doors blown off, they won't be in. If they lose close, I think they're in.
If they lose close and are left out, the policy will have to change or teams will opt out.

They can get a bye if the win.
If they opt out they will play a road game in the first round somewhere like Texas, UGA, Ohio, Notre Dame, etc.

It's going to have to be something to the effect of...Conf Title games can help the winners, but not hurt the losers as much. The whole thing is figuring out how to keep a team that's playing an extra game from falling out the playoff to a team that didn't have an extra game. It should just be a rule that if a team ALREADY in the playoff loses a Conf Title game, they cannot be passed by a team that didn't play in a conf title game. In reality if we beat SMU, then we basically should knock Bama out of their playoff spot as well.

If SMU loses & is left out of the CFP
Dec 5, 2024, 2:14 PM
|
|
Then I guarantee that this will happen in the ACC and/or Big 12 down the road.
Look at the current rankings & it's clear that the 12-team format is essentially gonna be the SEC/B10 Invitational. Is anyone talking about what happens to Bama/Ole Miss in rankings if Georgia (their best win) gets blown out in SECCG for their 3rd loss? No, yet we're having serious discussion about SMU (1 of 3 CFP contenders to go thru conference RS undefeated) being left out if they lose to us.
If that happens should Clemson beat SMU, then those leagues (or schools in them) are gonna start trying to figure out how to game the system - and if turning down a CCG in order to protect their spot in the rankings & assuring a CFP berth (& by letter of format, ensuring multiple bids for their league) then don't be surprised if it becomes a reality.
