Swinney on QBs and pocket presence

Swinney on his radio show regarding where his QBs are with pocket presence out of camp: "I think that's an area that Cade really had to grow in...He's really, really taken ownership of that and I really expect him to be much better in that area. He just looks calmer. A different demeanor to him. And that's what experience does. There's no greater teacher than experience...Then CV (Christopher Vizzina) is a natural. His pocket presence is just instinctive to him. It's very, very natural for him...I think you'll see that when he has opportunity to play. I'm pleased with his development as well. I'd say the same thing about (Trent Pearman). He's had a really good camp also. We've got three guys who we feel like can run our offensive effectively and give us a chance to win."

No disrespect to anyone. But I’ll believe it when I see it, and trust me I want to see it.

😂 all lies We didn’t have one good QB last year and now we can win with 3? Dabo just says things to say them. He’s not believable at all

He’s saying it to them, not to us, and yes it’s for a purpose. Whether it’s true or not I don’t know. But he must think it’s what they need to hear through the media.
I’m also skeptical. But the good news is we will find out pretty quick.
It’s been awhile since we had a skill player on offense who took a big step forward as a starter from one year to the next.

Everyone’s got a plan till they get punched in the face
I’ll believe the improvement when the right tackle gets beat on the outside against UGA and he steps up, climbs the pocket and throws a 20 yard post on a dime

A tough opener to prove his new found pocket presence.

Tajh was around for 5 years and looked like a dear in the headlights against FSU. Looked great rest of the season really. That 1 game was indicative of Tajhs pocket presence, the team was simply over matched. If game 1 goes south at least give Cade until NC state to see if there is any growth.

Basically he’s saying our 2nd and 3rd string QBs are naturally comfortable in the pocket but for our starter it’s “an area that Cade really had to grow in” and “expects” him to be better this year. We all expected DJ to be better and were told how great he was in camp too. Ditto for the kicker Gunn last year; he was apparently Justin Tucker in practice. DW4, Trevor, and even Tajh were natural leaders with poise in the pocket. I’m sorry I’ve just never heard about a QB who had to work on his poise just flipping the switch and becoming elite. I really hope I’m wrong.

DJ had a significant progression from Year 1 to 2 as starter

under Streeter. Mid-season, in '22, he was putting up eerily similar numbers to the two legends prior to him. Blowouts weren't there, but wins were, with his much better overall play. By the end of the season when Cade took over DJ had relapsed. 14 wins in a row as a starter there for a stretch - led all of CFB, year 2. Then boom.
Cade posted DJ's 2nd year starting numbers in his 1st year, so there's a lot to look forward to up ahead. I would imagine last year was quite a shock for him as a pocket passer coming from all the time in the world in high school to holy ####, they're here. He didn't do too bad overall with where he was planted, and Dabo is one of the best for recruiting students of the game into the mix. Year 2 under Riley as well seems like a fair reason for high expectations.

What were you watching? DJ had exactly one good game in 2022 against Wake

I could gather 10 other guys from my neighborhood and mount a better defense than that Wake team had. Go back and look at the stats his next best game he threw for 233 yards; DW4 and Trevor had those numbers by halftime in most ACC games.

Cade was a consensus 5* 99 rated player. They sure got that wrong. More like a high 3 or low 4 according to the rating system criteria.
The very definition of a consensus 5* is they possess skills and techniques to be a day one impact player.

I know we didn't get to watch the fall scrimmage but it must have been a lot different than the spring.

Crap. When Dabo openly praises a position group they turn out to be a liability. Every year. That's he's saying this about the QBs is a big red flag.

Well, we'll know on Saturday if Cade has made improvements in this area. That much is for certain.
It's one thing to show it in practice, it's quite another in a game situation against an elite defense.
