Susan Smith's parole hearing brought up a similar case from here in Orangeburg

that happened a few years ago. Shaquan Duley killed her two young sons (at the TRUMP INN, somehow, I don't think this one has any affiliation with The Donald, it is a local dump) by strangling them, and THEN drove her van into the Edisto river, trying to hide the crime. The reason I thought about it again, is there is a story out there right now about the parallels to the Susan Smith case. One quote from the story touched a nerve. Excerpt below:

"In the aftermath of the trial, mental health evaluations were ordered for Duley, and the results were mixed. Although her defense team argued that her mental state at the time of the crime was compromised, the final legal decision reflected the complexity of the case. Duley’s family has since voiced their concerns, stating that she is not the "monster" that some in the media portrayed her as."

I'm sorry, family, but if you strangle your two young sons to death, THEN drown them in the river, you are the DEFINITION of a monster. Period. As one of the former lawyers for Susan Smith said in the parole hearing yesterday, a mother who kills her children has committed a "crime against nature". Meaning, she has gone against every maternal instinct that has been instilled in just about every single species since the Dawn of Time.

The only pity is, in the case of Susan Smith, we have to go through this same gut wrenching reminder every two years now, until she finally dies. Had she been convicted a year later in South Carolina, Life in Prison would really have meant LIFE, not 30 years and then a chance at parole every two years afterward. Bring back Old Sparky, Make Capital Punishment Great Again.
