What is your Hobby ?

Being a "loner type", I have many. One has been fish keeping. For over 50 years always had aquariums. I am an expert at that. In Charlotte had many tanks, even raised and sold fish to pet shops. Most folks (even fish stores) have no clue as to keeping fish.
24 years ago moved back to SC and scaled it back to just one 150 gal tank. I designed my house with a small room behind the living room tank wall where I had the large filters, supplies, a sink, etc all out of sight. My inside tank burned, have not had energy to begin again.

I have kept fish in the yard for about 30 years, still have about 20 fish in a 4000gal garden pond. I once tried Koi, but soon they were 10 pounds and too big, so I let them go. Now I just keep fancy gold fish, have not added one for 10 years as they seem to prosper and control their own population. Outside is much easier due to the volume of water, but the same science applies as to an indoor aquarium.

Have always been fairly active outside. In the 90s it was windsurfing, 2000s it was mountain biking, and 2020s it's been running. And indoors I like to do puzzles, which makes me officially old, I guess! Do a lot of reading, too, and listening to music - I enjoy discovering "new" artists (new to me, anyway) on Spotify.

Shooting song birds and dynamiting Koi fish. Other than that, on a serious note, it was travelling the country and the world finding new places to drink with new people. I think it would just be a hike here and there now.

Over time, I would say my main hobbies have been jogging and backyard bird watching. Just snapped this old friend again after 2 bottles of beer. I take a lot of photos.

I had a thirty gallon aquarium once. Had a variety of fish living in it. I could sit and just watch them for long periods of time. I believe it was a great stress reliever. A parasite was introduced into the tank, probably by another fish, bought from a pet store, that like you said, had no idea about keeping tropical fish. I tried every remedy available but nothing worked. I lost every fish, that I had. I haven't tried a comeback since.
Now for a hobby, I build and collect plastic models, and collect and sell toy soldiers. Yes, I'm reliving my childhood. I sell a lot on Ebay; however, I've found Ebay in most cases is a losing proposition. Ebay fees are outrageous, and quite honestly pretty dishonest in my opinion. I guess they're doing everything legally, but they sure are dirty about it.

I have several hobbies as well. Deer hunting is my current favorite. I also like to do small woodworking projects. I have built several tables, shelves and other things for around the house. I have started playing more golf since I retired and although I’m not very good at it and find it somewhat frustrating, I enjoy being outdoors with friends and enjoying a couple of beers along the way. When I was younger basketball was my passion and I played as often as possible between the ages of 12 and 45. Tore my bicep at age 45 and that ended the basketball for me. I also always enjoyed having a vegetable garden but where I live no I don’t have a good spot for one. I really miss my garden.

I used to be big into salt water tanks. I had an old 180 gallon setup and it started leaking while I was on vacation. $10k sill repair later and I decided no more water in the house except sinks and tubs.
I started playing video games when pong came out. Been playing ever since. I don’t spend many hours doing it anymore but I still play.
A deceased buddy got me into birding. I’ve checked off most of the birds in the guide. I really love migration time because if you’re lucky you’ll catch a bird on a feeder that doesn’t live anywhere near here. I keep a feeder at most windows.
I also love to hunt, fish, shoot, hike. I’d do it all at once if I could. Closest I’ve came was a whitetail walking up on me while I was wading the Chatooga River fly fishing for trout. I just happened to have my .357 for bear protection but thought better of having my truck confiscated. It was a monster 12 pointer that I hunted for two seasons and never got.
I like to smoke my own meats. I’ve been using a smoker a while and the only thing more fun is eating the meat.
Running. I run 4 miles a day minimum five days a week.
All things Clemson sports.
Drinking cold beer. Sipping fine bourbon.

Here is some history -
In the middle 60's there was a scuba club at Clemson. Being half tadpole I joined.
Lake Hartwell was filled up, but we did all our learning in the very tiny Clemson indoor pool. There was a small indoor pool back then.
I wrote my semester paper on 'Dive Dangers'. --- decompression sickness (the bends), arterial gas embolism, drowning, nitrogen narcosis, and barotrauma, etc.

A friend of mine was big into the re-enacting. He tried to get me into it, but at that time, I just didn't have any time. He also did metal detecting. He found an old cap and ball rifle, that he restored, and an officers saber, that was in absolutely wonderful condition. I guess the brass scabbard, and hilt probably did a lot to preserve it. plus he's found numerous buttons and buckles and the like. He said you can go to some obscure sites and find some great stuff, not just the places near major battlefields. I think he's visited most of the historic sites.

I got certified in the 70s in Charleston while I was in high school. We did a couple of pool dives then we did our open water dives up the Cooper River where the water turns brackish. You could barely see your hand in front of your face with a strong light. They had us follow the anchor rope to the bottom then just stay on the bottom looking and mostly feeling around for sharks teeth. I found a couple almost as big as the palm of my hand. Didn’t dive again until I moved to Florida in 1989. Best place I ever dove was Virgin Gorda in the BVI. That’s something else I used to enjoy but don’t do anymore.

I have lined up a thousand times since the age of 40 when I first did that (maybe more). I enjoy testing myself against others. I am too big, too fat, with no talent, but I have had fun with this. I would go so far as to say it helped me deal with the abyss in my darkest hour.
This hobby requires 24/7 commitment. Folks with a "real life" can not join in. I am off my feed right now, but not yet done with it.
