The new playoff system will barely improve over the BCS

Here's my first attempt at being a sports writer at age 42:
So College Football is all pat-themselves-on-the-back for the playoff committee they have put together. Don't they realize it is no different than the BCS or the old Bowl System? At the end of the day, who gets in can come down to an opinion rather than a mathematical calculation based on wins.
So whoopty doo! Now #5 gets left out instead of #3.
Don't they realize they have to push the left-out team as far down the rankings as possible before someone is left to complain?
4 teams leaves out #5 8 teams leaves out #9 16 teams leaves out #17 24 teams leaves out #25 32 teams leaves out #33
So 32 is overkill but probably the right thing to do, 16 would probably be agreable to all conferences and 24 seems like baby bear's bed...just right
Remember, in Football Div 2 there are 24 seeds, Div 3, 32 seeds. Are they tougher than FBS teams? Maybe so, but I digress.
So at 16 or 24 teams, here's what we'd be looking at:
All 10 conferences get an automatic bid for their conference winners. Sorry the independents get to fight for one of the remaining spots.
That leaves 6 or 14 spots to round out the 16 or 24 spots.
Since they love to talk about the 5 "power" conferences, even in the 16 seed scenario all 5 conferences could send their 2nd best and there would still be one spot.
However, the short of it is, as long as there is a human decision on who to put in the last spot of the playoffs, we might as well just go back to the old bowl system rathern than be all honeymoonish over this selection committee.

If we go back to 11-game seasons and play a 16-team

16 teams is plenty. There's no way the #17 team will win it

all. I actually wish it went with pure rankings and did not include conference championships. FSU played a lackluster Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl who was ranked #17. Geez, I'm actually sort of glad we didn't win the ACC because we would have played them instead of a top 10 LSU team in Atlanta.

How did northern Illinois crash the party anyway?

I think you go with 8, 12 team conferences. That gives 96 teams. I am sure some of the other schools could move down and be just fine if too much of a fuss is made, find some schools that are ready to move up and go to 8 with 16 teams. Everybody starts the year with a perfectly good shot at getting in. The first round of the playoffs is conference championship weekend. Take those 8 and have purely travel based regional match-ups. No seeding yet. With the last 4 you can look at travel again or if you really need to bring the polls in. to give seeds. This is too fair and simple to work.

I feel pretty comfortable with 8

I know that #9 will be left out but all teams have 12 games to build their resumes. It is highly unlikely that the 6th or 7th or 8th team would win anyway. The only problem with the one additional game from the 4 game playoff is that of injuries. If a 6th see knocks out the #3 starting QB and wins, it is not likely that they could beat the #1 team. I guess anything is possible. Eight just feels right to me - So, it MUST be right for everybody.

You might be comfortable with it

but I guess I am amazed that we all as CFB fans seem fine with a system that is completely different than any other championship path for any other sport? There are even 2 leagues junior to ours that do a playoff. Why are we like that? Because we grew up with the bowls and voting ant it's just ingrained in our heads?
Why can FCS have a 24 team playoff and more than 8 seems ridiculous to FBS fans. I am not trying to get on anyone's case here because I am a fan.
When I explain the playoffs to a fan up here in Boston they look at me like I have 2 heads.

If you're #9 you don't have a legitimate claim that you might be good enough to be national champion.
I'd have an 8-team playoff with the conference champions of the 5 best conferences that year getting automatic bids with the 3 best teams left getting in as at-large bids. Seed them 1-8 and let the bowls bid on who gets to host what games, starting with the NC game, then the 2 semi-finals, then the 4 quarter-finals.

"If you're #9 you don't have a legitimate claim that you might be good enough to be national champion."
It may very well be a true statement. I probably even agree with you.
The question is WHY do you (we) believe that.
Should we tell Div 2 and 3 to reduce the number of contenders in their playoffs because the #9 team never wins?

I've been saying this for a while... BCS is better

Because when you only take the top two teams, you're usually only picking from no loss or one loss teams and there are less teams with a claim to be number one or two. When you go to four teams in a playoff, you're most likely including at least one or two one- loss teams, and there are a lot more of those than there are undefeated teams or one loss teams that people think ough to be number one or number two. As you increase the number of teams, this effect only gets worse.
So it's not so much about how highly ranked the "left out" team is as it is about how many teams will have similar resumes to the last teams in.

It should be just like the old days of college basketball. Only conference champions get the chance at a national championship. Right now we have 10 conferences. Take the top 2 teams and give them a bye or drop the 2 lowest ranked champions. Then seed the rest based on the polls. I don't care how good you are if you can't win your conference you don't get to be in the playoff.

This is my problem with playoffs. The point of a championship is to recognize the best team that year. A playoff is supposed to help crown the best team as the champion. Instead everyone focuses on the last team to get in. The focus shifts from making sure that the best team gets rewarded to instead making sure someone that has lost a few games doesn't get their feelings hurt.
Playoffs minimize the accomplishments of the top teams and forgive the failures of lesser teams.

Why would I bother?
The NFL playoff is about maximizing revenue. It's not about making sure the most deserving team hoists the lombardi trophy.

It doesn't make any logical sense, but people love it for some reason.
Look at the way the NFL crowns its champion. You have 16 games to narrow down the 4 teams in a division to 1 team. But apparently they still aren't sure they got the best of those 4 teams after 16 games of evidence so they let 4 more teams into the playoff.
16 games to winnow 4 teams down to 1, and you can't even get that right.
But, I'm somehow supposed to believe that only 4 games can pick the 1 best team out of 12 just because the price of tv commercials for those 4 games goes way up?
