Darn. Was hoping he would stay and develop into a solid player here. Always liked his HS film.

Oh well, next portal man up.

Didn’t he also play in every game this season?

Maybe a snap here or there. But mostly, from what I saw, it was mostly Parker, Woods, Denhoff, and Lawson that played DE. Woods was DE most of the year, then he had problems with contain, and we also had problems in the interior of the line. So we moved Woods back home to DT and started playing Lawson more at that spot. Denhoff seemed to switch to either side to spell whoever needed rest. Then in the Texas game, Lawson was getting pushed around. So we moved Woods back out to DE to have a bigger front. That seemed to be the DE rotation for the season.

Successful Teams bring in starters and send out reserves

The way the best teams in college football do this transfer portal roster management is to carefully assess those people who are likely to be in the two deep of a championship caliber team.

In order to bring someone in that you think is better, someone else has to leave. It’s always painful to see a recruit that you had high hopes for success leave. However, after a few years, the coaches should have a very good idea of whether or not a defensive end is going to develop into a championship caliber contributor.

Are we at 85 scholarships now? With two former walk-ons who could give up a scholarship if needed.

Agreed, always thought he would be starting around this time and always wondered how he couldn’t atleast especially with his so many years here beat out Lawson for more PT. Thought that wasn’t a good sign since we’ve all seen the rotation per game for the oppo DE spot. Hopefully Patterson can step up bc nobody has popped off the screen so far at that position IMO.

The defensive and position has to set the edge, get off of blocks, penetrate without abandoning a gap, and make sure that no one can just lineup and run the ball down your throat.

We can’t win a championship when a team like Texas just lines up and runs the ball down our throat. The major difference between 2015 to 2020 versus the years before that or since thenwas the quality of our defensive line players and defensive coaching to make sure that no one could just run the ball down our throat.

We just need to get players either through high school recruiting or through the Portal who can do this.

Not shocking considering we picked up a DE in the portal. May not be the last one either.

When you bring T-Peers in, someone currently on the roster will go out. All you quantum physics t-netters know that Wolfgang Paili formulated...Two objects can not occupy the same space at the same time. Transfer portal verified!

Did you really think getting portal players would add to depth and not to losing guys already on the roster? It's all about playing time and not many players want to be depth. You just hope the guys you bring in are better than the ones you lose and will fit into the team culture.

You are sharing a concept that escapes many here on TNet.

That’s not to say that acquiring players via the portal is necessarily a bad thing, but this case (Hoeffler departing) represents a potential consequence.

Sometimes the tide off isn’t worth it. Lucky for us Heldt has a couple of seasons he can play. I would hate to bring in a player for only 1 season if it means losing a younger player.

Bigger, more talented and with some experience. 255 seemed like a stretch - looked more like 240. Liked his quickness but that’s about it. Need another quality DE and hopefully Mayo and Lawson(also needs to add bulk) improve to help more next year.

His quickness was not enough to compensate for his inability to put on good weight and strength. Rumph upon arriving told him he needed to get acquainted with the weight room. He still has a ways to go in that area. If he wants to play, he won’t be heading to a CFP contender.

Oh well isn’t gonna cut. If we lose anymore next season is SERIOUSLY going to hurt. We think 9-4 is bad? Cant imagine what this board will look like if we win 8 or fewer next year.

He was a loss we can afford, barely, but we can afford it. I like our D line rotation going into next year. We cannot lose anyone else though.

Yeah, I love how T-Net raved about how great a recruit pick-up he was and as soon as he transfers, he's not worth a crap. Ghesh.

He was highly recruited across the country.

He had a good upside but needed lots of development meaning good potential if he put in the work but not yet ready for prime time. I imagine we will add another DE in the spring portal window

He was going to be a quality depth piece...maybe even a larger role if he developed more. Wish he would have stayed.

With that said, we can use the opportunity to upgrade here to a known commodity. If we choose to..........

Not so fast.

We don’t need another portal DE unless he’s a sho nuff stud.

Acquiring another depth quality guy will just make the current backups (guys who are developing quickly like Darien Mayo and Jaheim Lawson) believe that Dabo and Chris Rumph have tossed them aside.

I was waiting for this shoe to drop after the portal signing.

A.J. had some pass rush skills and showed some promise as a situational 3rd down rush guy. With that being said he repeatedly got destroyed by good run blockers

Agree…he got into every game this year including Texas w some TFLs. But it sounds like he wasn’t gonna move up the chart since no one is leaving and we got the Purdue guy added…seems smallish for DE (240) but TJ isn’t any bigger…but TJ gets after it a lot more.

Hate to see any DE go but if he couldnt take snaps away from Denhoff.
