Statistical Comparison of South Carolina & Louisiana
Dec 28, 2012, 9:23 AM

Since there has been so much bashing of the great state of Louisiana by some on this board, I decided to look up some statistics on both Louisiana & South Carolina.
There has been a lot of talk about poor Louisianans. Well lets look at a few stats about income:
LA unemployment rate 5.8 % SC unemployment rate 8.3 %
LA % below poverty level 17.3 % SC % below poverty level 15.7 %
LA median household income $43,733 SC median household income $43,625
LA % of national GDP 1.47 SC % of national GDP 1.13
Well it looks like both states are pretty close in the wealth department with LA being better off in most categories.
There has also been a lot of talk about how stupid people from LA compared to SC. Let's look at an education stat:
LA % of people with a bachelor's degree 20.3% SC % of people with a bachelor's degree 23.7%
Not a very big difference there.
Lastly, there have been plenty comments talking about trailers and "stealing internet from a trailer", "living in your mom's trailer", etc...Let's look at a stat on mobile homes:
LA Mobile home % of housing 13.4 % SC Mobile home % of housing 17.9 %
So it turns out South Carolina has 4.5 % more mobile homes compared to regular homes than Louisiana does. That is pretty funny considering all the state trash talk sent my way.

You don't want to go down the food road, Louisiana wins that subject handily.

Born and bred in SC. After many sojourns in New Orleans I got skewered for heaping praise on, IMHO, a great city with one poster calling it a sewer. Quite possibly he/she has visited NOLA but never wandered off of Bourbon Street which is kind of a sewer/tourist trap. But there is so much more. Great food, great music and where else has drive-thru daiquiri bars? My kind of town.

Let me first start out by saying that I think Louisiana is a super cool place and if I wasn't in SC I would probably be there. Two points:
First LA % below poverty level 17.3 % SC % below poverty level 15.7 % This is a significant difference. Louisiana has 58,091 more people below the poverty line which equates to 1% of Louisiana's population. Also note this amount of people is the equivalent to Greenville's city population!!(2010 census 58,409)
Second LA Mobile home % of housing 13.4 % SC Mobile home % of housing 17.9 % I bet Katrina demolished 100s if not 1000s of mobile homes. Also I bet the city of New Orleans restricts mobile homes causing a significant swing in this statistic.
So maybe the trailer comments are unfounded, but the statistics regarding poverty prove that Louisianans are more impoverished.

Have we so quickly forgotten about hurricane Hugo?
Apparently LSU fans don't know how to spell GOOGLE.
That's G-O-O-G-L-E.
Don't forget the .com at the end either.

Let's dig a little deeper
Dec 28, 2012, 10:36 AM
|
|
Point 1: LA unemployment rate 5.8 % SC unemployment rate 8.3 %
Take out everyone employed in LA as a gator trapper (seasonal), nutria hunter or Bourbon St. vomit mopper: LA unemployment rate 12.8 % SC unemployment rate 8.3 %
Point 2 LA median household income $43,733 SC median household income $43,625
Include unreported income from video poker: LA median household income $43,733 SC median household income $102,415
Point 3 LA % of national GDP 1.47 SC % of national GDP 1.13
Alcohol-induced dementia is not a product: LA % of national GDP 0.47 SC % of national GDP 1.13
Point 4 LA % of people with a bachelor's degree 20.3% SC % of people with a bachelor's degree 23.7%
Discounting for people with LSU degrees LA % of people with a bachelor's degree 8.3% SC % of people with a bachelor's degree 23.7%
Or alternatively adding people with SC driver's licenses LA % of people with a bachelor's degree 20.3% SC % of people with a bachelor's degree 83.7%
Point 5 LA Mobile home % of housing 13.4 % SC Mobile home % of housing 17.9 %
Those with DishNetwork or DirectTV, a 50+" flat screen, and a quality meth lab LA Mobile home % of housing 2.6 % SC Mobile home % of housing 42.4 %
We win. Suck it.

Has professional sports, SC does not.
Louisiana has Mardi Gras, SC has St Pats in 5 points
Louisiana also has terrible reality TV shows that make them look awful, SC does not....
Both states are cool, I love living in SC though, especially the capital bc i am not far from historic Charleston, the beach, the mountains, or charlotte.

One of the best things about living in SC....
Dec 28, 2012, 11:41 AM
|
|
...is the land; beaches, plains and mountains, take your choice, SC has it all. On the other hand, Loosyaner has swamps, slightly elevated swamps and flat land, very little in the way of varied topography. And, SC folks aren't nearly as violent as I believe Looseyana is 2nd in the entire nation in gun deaths...

If you knew anything about the French revolution you'd disassociate yourself from the cajun culture. There's never been a more morally and physically filthy bunch than the French.

As a decendant of the same French Huguenot stock

as many cajuns (bastardized "Acadians" from their time in New Brunswick), I would proudly disagree with you. When the Huguenots were driven from France following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, France suffered a massive brain drain as the Huguenots made up a disproportionate percentage of intellectuals and artisans. Many ended up in Nova Scotia, but left there when they were required to swear an oath of loyalty to the British Crown. My ancestors ended up in Virginia and in Currituck County, NC, but many landed in Louisiana.

Yes, and they all live in Columbia. Clemson rednecks come from the farm, not the trailer.
