The Stanford Tree is the Stanford Band's mascot and the unofficial mascot of Stanford University. Stanford's team name is "Cardinal", referring to the vivid Stanford Cardinal Red color (not the common songbird as at several other schools), and the university does not have an official mascot.

Those of you old enough can affirm what I'm about to post. You youngsters will have to believe us or ask Siri or Alexi or Wikipedia or TikTok or whatever place you consider the ultimate authority of knowledge.

For decades they were the Stanford Indians. Jim Plunkett won the Heisman Trophy there in 1970.

Around that time the country was becoming obsessed with Native American names for athletic teams. California, as usual, was on the cutting edge of calling for name changes away from anything Native American. In the early 70's they quit using the name Indians. Eventually, a decade or so later, they officially adopted "Cardinal." For years it was assumed by the general public they were the "Cardinals" as in the bird. But, they never were. It always referred to "cardinal" the color. (Their official colors are cardinal and white.) Hence the singular name, not the plural.

I've heard several stories about how the university looked for an acceptable name to replace "Indians" but there were objections to whatever they considered, so they just went with the color "cardinal" as it doesn't appear offensive to anyone. I can't verify any of the stories I've heard, so I won't repeat them.
