Sport vs Hobby

What's the difference between a sport and a hobby? Had a discussion with a coworker about this recently. I was arguing that golf is a hobby, not a sport. I don't consider golfers as athletes. Same with bowling, curling, and such. But they we got to talking about how you define a sport vs a hobby.
To me, basketball, baseball, tennis, football, lacrosse, swimming, running/track and such are all sports. Golf, bowling, corn hole (since there are professional leagues!) and such would all be hobbies, to me. I think the difference is that sports like tennis are much more athletically demanding than the others that are hobbies. Endurance, strength, speed, agility, skill - all are part of tennis. Golf, not so much.
Another distinction, the sports can be considered a valid workout and builder of strength and conditioning. Golf doesn't meet that requirement in my book. You can build strength in order to play golf, but golf itself doesn't do that. Hobbies can be relaxing. Sports are demanding. You don't discuss business on the tennis court or out running. You do on the golf course.
Then there's NASCAR. Not sure where that falls. Can't really say that that's a hobby, but not sure about it being a real sport and the drivers being athletes.
Yes, it was a slow day at the office.

golf, putt-putt, cornhole, bowling, ping pong, darts, nascar, horse racing, fishing, hunting, etc are not sports. And maybe for horse racing, nascar etc "game" isnt totally accurate either.....but closer than "hobby" and definitely not a sport.

When you have the stamina to spend hours on the range beating balls, the nerve to sink a downhill curling fifteen footer, and the delicacy to pitch it close from thick rough, it's an effin' sport. When you have to do 100 push ups a day to maintain your distance, it's a sport. Only those who lack the fortitude to do that call it a "hobby". Former Clemson golfer

Man I can play 18 holes with a cart and it will wear you out. Been many many years since I attempted to walk. Seems they do not build these newer courses for walking.

and a score is kept in some fashion to determine a "winner" is probably a sport. Hobbies are more about personal gratification. Woodworking is a hobby, painting is a hobby, model trains could be a hobby.
I don't think it really matters. If it is something you enjoy, then just enjoy it, without trying to label it.

Even if it’s a small one. So golf would be one because a golf swing is a very technical and specific physical action that separates who wins and losses.

NASCAR in my mind is sport as in all racing in general.
Golf and Tennis are sports. Cornhole and fishing are also sports imo. They have a good many corn hole tourneys in this new sports complex they built in Rock Hill.
Most of what you mentioned can be either. Some just do them as a hobby but to some people that are very competitive they would most definitely consider it sport. Friend of mine fishes in tourneys regularly and never just fishes for fun. If he could not win money I don’t believe he would even do it.

One more defense of golf

As a kid, I routinely walked 36-45 holes a day, at least 5 days a week, taking salt pills along the way. You may convince me that it is a hobby at my current station in life, but it was most definitely a sport when I spent 40-50 hours a week practicing, playing and competing…and I have the trophies to prove it.
Try convincing the Clemson golf teams, who get less than full scholarships and still put in those hours, all while being students, representing your school, and winning championships, that golf is not a sport.
Hobby = you can suck at it and still have fun Sport = you never stop trying to improve, and “if you’re not first…you’re last”

I believe you can treat golf like a sport or a hobby. If you want to be good at it and win, it will require a lot of practice, physical and mental stamina like a sport. If you just want to got out once a month with your buddies, have fun, drink beer, and take whatever score you get, then its a game.
The great thing about golf, is that it can be both.

Most top golfers these days are pretty athletic

I would say 99.999% of golfers are just hobbyists, but the pros are athletes playing a sport.
You can definitely be a professional bowler without being remotely athletic though. Some pro bowlers happen to also be very athletic, but it's in no way required.
Tennis is 100% a sport.
And I know alot of professional race car drivers (not just Nascar) are in great shape, but I just can never call that a sport.

What about dance? To be a professional ballerina, or even a good amateur, you need to have a certain level of athleticism. It is not a sport. There is no element of competition. Competitive cheerleading or dance teams that are involved in competitions are sports teams.

Before back surgery, I knocked the golf ball around as a hobby with a couple buddies for a few laughs and a couple cold drinks but when it was a tournament or money was on the line, it was a sport and every physical and mental tool I had was being used to play to win. Any sport, can be played as a hobby but not every hobby is a sport. Wood working is not a sport but axe throwing can be.

This is simple. If you're really good at golf (professional) it's a sport. If you suck at it or are fairly good (low handicap) it's a hobby. The same with any other sport. If you're elite at softball, baseball, etc it's a sport. If you just play softball in your church league it's a hobby.
