South Carolina Players go to USC
Jun 4, 2012, 2:33 PM
|
|
Telling Stat:
In-State Players on the 2012 Roster USC:18 Clemson:8
Players from the South (SC, NC, GA, FL) USC:23 Clemson:21
Why do we not recruit players from our own state and even from the Upstate? (Roth, Pankake, Martin, Thompson, etc.
Jack believes in his yankee players who only play outside ball 6 months of the year.
Ray Tanner recruiters SC players who play outside year round and builds a pipeline of younger fans who root for the guys who they played with/against growing up in SC.
It is evident that Jack's downfall is talent and recruiting and he needs to retire. He has solidly proven to be a very good coach, but not a great coach.

Isn't Stolz a senior? Pankake is only a freshman SS I think, he could have played sparingly some this season and then possibly been the starter for 2-3 years.

Pankake wanted shortstop from Day 1. As many of us have seen (sometimes to our detriment), Jack is very loyal to his seniors and basically told Pankake he would get some ABs in the outfield (like Baum) or perhaps second if he could beat out Wilkerson. The Coots had an immediate opening at SS. The kid went to Columbia.

Actually joey was drafted as a pitcher. He is playing college ball only because he wanted a chance to be an every day player. Tanner gave him his wish when most everyone else wanted him to pitch. Dont be surprised to see him pitch some relief work in the next couple of years.
As for instate recruiting maybe jack could do better. I still think some of you are being unfair in the comparisons to tanner. Tanner has built an elite program that recruits lights out every year now. I dont think there is much legget can do about it at this point and i dont know who you would hire that you can realistically expect to catch up with tanner. You are pretty much saying be top 5 every year or else.

yeah, right. the series this year, including the regionals, were as evenly matched as can be, and that is with a clemson team that is missing some key ingredients. the programs aren't as far apart as you would like to think. 1 recruiting class can swing that pendulum back towards us.

I dont think they are far apart. I think usc is elite and clemson is in the next tier of teams who can beat anyone but are not as consistent. The gap could close quickly if clemson scores some great recruits. Tanner is going to get his and jack needs to match him on the recruiting trail. Then clemson needs to play a bit more consistently. Gossett is an ace, there are other good pitchers on the team, plenty of bats. Inconsistent play is really all that separated the two teams this year.

Sad to say--but it is harder for some of real good players

who would play for Clemson to get it--just like a lot of other folks.
I am proud of my degree and I am a South Carolinian but it is tougher for some of our state kids who want to go to Clemson to get in than it is getting into the other one in Cooter Land.

We have some really good players from SC and neighboring states including Felder, Schaffer and Kieboom.
We also have some "yankees" that have been darn great, including Pohl and McGibbon. Meyer had a great outing and he is from California.
I want the BEST players that WANT to be Tigers. Don't care where they are from.

Of course it is tougher to get into Clemson. The size of the school forces them to place restrictions on how many students they allow to enroll...Clemson has about 5k less undergraduate students

The reason is much simpler and never gets talked about for some reason. Baseball players receive no more than a 1/2 scholarship. The increasing cost of tuition at Clemson is going to make it almost impossible to win the recruiting war for in state kids. Clemson is almost $4000 a year more expensive than Carolina. At both schools, most of the players are already foregoing playing pro ball to come to college. It is going to be an awfully hard sell that it is worth spending more money to go to Clemson. Out of state tuition is about the same so gives Clemson a more equal footing for those recruits.

Yes we are recruiting some players from the East Cobb area but we are also competing with GT and UGA for these players. When they get 1/2 a scholarship, like you said, they have the choice of going to an in-state school (GT, UGA) where 1/2 the money will be from baseball and some of their other money may come from a state academic scholarship (similar to our Life scholarship) or come to Clemson, get 1/2 a scholarship, and then pay the rest. Pretty big difference. I also heard that some North Carolina schools waive some of these out of state fees for athletes/baseball players, but I'm not sure about this.

Your logic is flawed.........Out of state tuition is much higher than in state. Therefore, it would cost more for an out of state prospect to come to CU than an in state player. Wouldn't that mean it would be harder, not easier to get out of state players to sign? I'm just askin????

Clemson allows the Athletic Dept to give instate tuition to all athletes regardless if they are from in or out of state.

I've heard this many times, but I've read the instate tuition waiver requirements for both USC and Clemson and did not see athletic participation or scholarships listed as grounds.

My logic isn't flawed. I was referring specifically to players choosing between USC and Clemson. A player from anywhere but SC will pay essentially the same to go to either school.

are likely going to the pros. They may never make it to the show, but I feel a lot of them aren't afraid to take out a loan to pay for tuition thinking they will make more then that once they are drafted

but Clemson is closer to one of the most fertile college baseball recruiting grounds than anywhere in the country...Atlanta and specifically north Atlanta than SC. Why not take advantage of that? Look at the number of players from SC on major rosters in the states of NC, SC and Ga. SC isn't the baseball recruiting hotbed that folks think. The state just doesn't put out as much D1 talent as surrounding states.
And if we just got a bunch of yankee players, why are we only 2 below a school that overly recruits SC?

unfortunately the search engine on TigerNet is blown a gasket, so IO cannot recall the post verbatim.
But I remember the results:
SCAR has 16 players from SC Clemson has 8 players from SC BUT..Clemson has 8 players from ATLANTA Atlanta is closer to Clemson than Charleston and Columbia.
So this is basically a wash in my book.

Montgomery(from Sumter, his dad played at Clemson) wasn't even looked at.He was the starter yesterday for them. This comes from the coach of the Sumter legion team that included Price.Story goes Montgomery wrote all the state coaches with his stats ETC and all the major schools sent someone to check him out. Our great coach wrote him back and said he could come work out for them in Clemson but they couldn't come see him play. He is now and Gamecock. Thanks Jack. Wallie Jones was the coach and is a dentist in Sumter. My dad goes to him and that is where the story was told.

Hmmm. Must not have played baseball because no Montgomery's listed in the media guide. Wally Jones has run every possible player to SC that he could over the years. Even some of your buddies on the USC boards (i.e. MCR) don't have much good to say about him).

With Matthew LeCroy taking over recruiting
Jun 4, 2012, 4:07 PM

...hopefully that will change. Help is on the way.
There are actually 2 current Clemson commitments on the Diamond Devils 17U (black) Baseball Team. They are the top travel-baseball program in all of South Carolina (and possibly the Nation).
I can't remember the last time a Diamond Devils player ended up at Clemson. In the past they've all ended up at South Carolina, or someplace else. Until recently, I don't think Clemson had much contact with anybody in this area of the state (Charleston).

I think you mean Bradley LeCroy. Matthew is a manager in the Washington Nationals farm system (Double A this year I think). Had a chance to chat with him after he got kicked out of a game at Myrtle Beach last year.

Indeed, it's his program alright. I'm not sure, all I know is waaay too many DD kids have ended up playing D1 ball elsewhere, and it seems like the best of them end up at South Carolina.

This state doesn't ahve enough high level D1 talent
Jun 5, 2012, 12:22 AM

Face it, once you factor out the kids who go pro no matter where they are drafted (my opinion is the low priority on education in general) then there is clearly not enough.
USC has the most. We have some and Coastal has less than us. CofC has more, but neither Coastal or CofC make the tournament without winning their conference. We have good ball players, just not enough ACC and SEC level, otherwise CofC would be 1 or 2 seed every year.

Jordan Montgomery wanted to go to Clemson. His family is Clemson. His coach in Sumter called Jack and asked him to come see Jordan pitch. Jack told him to send the kid to camp and he would look at him. Ray snatched him away from us. Pitiful.
