As great as they are, they are not Dabo. If you remember, Dabo didn't start out winning 10 games a year, but he built a dynasty. I hope these guys do also. They certainly had a great teacher and role model.

Don’t forget Billy Napier. I know he wasn’t here long and

Dabo fired him, but doesn’t he count as a limb?

Napier seemed to take a bad situation, land on his feet, and work his way into a better situation now than he may have had if he hadn't been fired.

I think CBV can make something out of the OU situation if given enough time.

Something to remember about head coaching hires...

Oct 9, 2022, 8:57 PM

When coaches take head coaching jobs - most of the time they are taking the job because the previous guy got fired for an under-performing team. In many cases there is a reason the team is under-performing and in many cases it's not just because of poor coaching.

Jeff Scott walked into a talent deprived situation and just can't seem to get out of it. Chad Morris also walked into a similar situation at Arkansas after using some of his success at SMU as a stepping stone to the Power 5. Tony Elliott lost a lot of UVA's talent to the transfer portal when Bronco quit and looks to be fighting a change away from "Bronco's way". It is little wonder these guys have struggled/are struggling.

BV's situation at Oklahoma is a little different. While Oklahoma has offensive talent, for years they have struggled with their defense under Stoops and Lincoln Riley. BV ain't going to turn that around overnight. Truthfully, I'm starting to think Lincoln Riley saw some bad times ahead for Oklahoma (just as Jimbo Fisher did at FSU and Urban Meyer did at Florida) and bolted from Oklahoma at an opportune moment.

I guess what I'm saying is that taking over as a head coach is usually a tenuous proposition at best. Most guys just don't walk into turnkey, well run programs from day one with a history of winning coming naturally. That was certainly the case for Chad Morris, Jeff Scott, and Tony Elliott...

Do you think the SEC switch for OU caused Riley to bolt?

I think a deal and opportunity of a lifetime caused him to bolt.

I feel that Riley is an “always looking for the next job”

Oct 9, 2022, 9:33 PM

kind of guy. I wouldn’t be surprised if he bolted for the NFL in a few years. When he has to start competing with OStU, Mich, and PSU he might start thinking twice about USC.

Funny how many people liked to say Dabo was nothing but a CEO with great assistants...

Any coaching tree?

Oct 9, 2022, 11:55 PM

I can’t name any successful college tree. Maybe there is a branch here and there - but I’m drawing a blank on any trees.

Saban has Kirby but other than him I can’t name another coach that has risen through the ranks under Saban and has had sustained success once they left.

Riley came up under Stoops and Day under Meyer. Both had success in continuing what were already juggernauts and they didn’t have to build the program.

I recognize Riley is seeing early success at USC so that seems to be a solid branch from the Stoops tree. Brother Mark at UK is good little twig that might become a branch. TBD.

Anyway, is there a successful (using your own definition) college coaching tree out there these days?

Do the same on Saban’s tree and years compared.***

Feel free to add the substance abuse, firings, etc.
