So Wes Goodwin against SC,

who had a QB that struggled to throw the ball but had game breaking mobility, runs a 4-2-5 leaving 6 defenders in the box and not one of them named Sammy Brown, when he should have been running a 3-4-4 against Sellers to contain him. Fast forward a week to SMU, who has a QB with much more elite ability with his arm and less ability with his legs and now he decided to rush 3 down linemen and give him all day to pick us a apart.
Can someone make this make sense? I'm a novice at defensive schemes and such but am I wrong here?

It's just mind numbing stuff. I couldn't believe that he let SMU drive down the field to tie it up like he did. Didn't blitz rushed 3 most of the time, 4 a couple of times. In the third quarter he had some weird mess looking blitz going- a bunch of defenders kind standing at the LOS and not rushing while our DBs were on islands.

Oh wow! He knows more than a random poster on Tigernet? No way!!! Does he know more than his peers? You know, the guys actually in his field? Doubtful. So maybe think before giving such a pointless, idiotic reply. He doesn’t get paid to know more than this guy. He gets paid to outsmart offensive coordinators. Something he rarely does against offenses that a worth a ####.

You are wrong...Wes has forgotten more than some of our nutcase who want to fire everyone and bring back Frank Howard's ghost! When he was healthy everyone had trouble with the coot QB! DJU size and more speed than Cade...our offense 'lost' the Usck game plain and simple!

He’s not supposed to know more about defensive schemes than Wes. But no one can argue what Wes is doing is not working. We’ve regressed in nearly every measurable metric since he’s taken over. Maybe you should just ask yourself…. “Do I need to reply with short barbs or actually contribute to the conversation.”
Try that.

he has a higher completion percentage and average yards per throw than CK. SC is a run-first offense so he doesn’t have big numbers. Sellers isn’t an elite passer, and CK has a better QB rating and TD/Interceptions ratio than him, but saying Sellers struggles to throw the ball is just wrong.

Scheme. That’s a credit to Wes. I don’t love some of the things Wes does, but the SCU QB scrambles were mostly forced by Clemson and the scheme we were running. We also got excellent pressure from the D line. Where we struggled was in bringing him down once we got hands on him. That’s not scheme, that’s execution. I can’t answer the Sammy Brown part though, I’m sure he had reasons, but not sure what they were.

We can debate it until we are blue in the face but if the tackles that were broken by their QB were not broken, we would not be having this conversation. We failed to finish the job our players were in position to finish.

The 4-2-5 against Sellers was not a bad concept given that we were matching their personnel with one of the 5 being a single-high safety and putting speed on the field. However, playing man coverage on the back end was dangerous given we did not contain him from a pass rush standpoint with our front 4. Too often our D-line pushed too far up the field opening up running lanes for Sellers to escape and gain large chunks of yards on the ground.
Jennings has excelled throughout the year at being poised and finding the read that the defense gives him until something bigger opens up. While the last couple drives were frustrating to watch from a fan standpoint, it was evident that we were just trying to keep the big play from happening. However, it could have all been moot if our offense had moved the ball the last three drives to keep the ball away from SMU though it would have helped if 1) the facemask would have been called and 2) Cade had not forced an incomplete pass to Antonio Williams on the 3rd and 7 when TJ Moore was very open for an easy first down.

I believe it is reasonable to question the personal on the field and the alignment in terms did we give ourselves the best chance for success. On the other hand, Sellers is a great athlete so stopping him for the entire game is unlikely. We held the coots to their 2nd lowest point total for the season. Had our offense been able to play complimentary football by getting the occasional first down, it would have changed the whole complexion of the game. The best defense is keeping the ball away from the other team's offense. I would also point to an advantage Venables had in terms of our having a great offense during his tenure. This is important in terms of our fans comparing Venables vs Goodwin. During CBV's tenure, he was great at making the other team one dimensional as the opponent had to be aggressive if they wanted to keep up with scoring from our offense. His defenses did not have to stay on the field due to a bunch of three and outs (except when we scored too quickly). For this reason, comparing the two DCs is not apples to apples.

Great post! Questioning the scheme is a valid point, but the offense has to help the defense stay off the field. I believe that the defense was on the field for about 75-80 plays against SMU!

The D could help themselves by getting a stop or two on 3rd and long. We are almost last in the number of 20+ yard plays given up and most of those seem to come on 3rd Down. Wes has zero business being the LB coach. Maybe he would be a better DC (would t count on it but maybe) if we had consistent solid LB play.We have tons of talent at LB but seems they’re constantly out of position and have bad gap integrity. I’ve heard our defensive players in too may interviews talk about “having to trust the coaches” that sounds like they’re being put in play calls that they disagree with regularly

I always seem to forget his name when I go to talk about him to someone else. The D doesn't have the tenacity it had with Venables. I just don't see it. By the way, I'm starting to feel that way about Garrett Riley as OC. He seems to get too conservative when we get a lead.

I think Riley calls the plays but Dabo determines how aggressive we are and when. Notice in the 2nd half we got very conservative vs SC. The same thing we did last year against them when it worked and Dabo admitted to it being his decision. This time it didn't work. And when Dabo let Riley loose on that last drive we looked unstoppable.

Wes Goodwin is hard to figure out his logic. If you are going to rush just 3 you better be covering the back end to a T. We weren’t exactly doing that with soft coverage and players like Barrett Carter playing out of position ( he should know better).

with only 4 DBs playing man, I disagree. 4 LBs would have contained him to that 1st and 2nd level. We were playing nickel with 2 LBs and as soon as our d line got upfield he was off to the races through the second level and by that time in open field no one is going to catch him.

Four linebackers would not have contained in. With the possible exception of Sammy brown, sellers is faster than every single one of them. You're living in Fantasyland if you think these linebackers are going to somehow stop him. It's not 1988.

Your'e not wrong. This guy was employing schemes that gave the SMU QB free reign to pick Clemson's defense apart in the second half.nbhe actually ran 3-3-5s with no pass rush in the second half. He will eventually put Dabo in the hot seat again next year.
