We don't even know if that is an issue at all. That's just where people go to when they are looking for a reason.

It's an issue. Has been an issue. Yes technique has also been a part of the problem but strength and conditioning has been an issue even BV was here.

Repetitive. You get the point. We might have the best conditioning program around. There is no way we would never know.

Just look at a team like OSU and then ours. Just the eye test says there's an issue, dudes look much more muscular. Maybe we need to get the Osterine flowing again?

Meh, the OSU players are just better physical specimens. 20 mil will get you there type of players. Clemson talent is not up to par with the elite teams.

Talking about. I’m a little biased I admit, I worked for the man a long time ago and also worked for 2 other power 4 programs. His program of training is as good as anyone’s. People like to compare, but it’s not apples to apples, for the most part Clemson does not get finished products on the OL and DL and more recently LB that other programs like Bama and Ohio State (Wisconsin, LSU and Penn State as well) get. Clemson also (well other than the Ostarine) does not give out HGH to their athletes from other sources like Bama and other SEC schools has in the past. I have been around a lot of strength coaches and Coach B is one of the best.

A lot, and I'll go as far to say it definitely depends on the kids themselves. Some are driven. Some is on coaching. Coaching on how likely they may play. Those often transfer. 125 kids are not going to get along. Dabo recruits as best he can to vet each, but people change.
Coach B is limited on the time he can spend with each. Then they're on their own. It's also tied heavily to nutrition and lifestyle.
I'm sure Coach Luke and Allen will have a lot of input on this subject as well.
I would also add that I don't think many true fans want our kids to work out 24/7 and only graduate 40% of the time. If so, go pull for uga

Maybe it's not the actual program, maybe it's accountability or discipline.
Seeing players like Woods and DJ get fat and slow means that someone isn't on their ### about their conditioning. Seeing players get out of shape and then get back into shape their last year hoping for a shot at the league; means that someone at Clemson is not holding them accountable.

Leverage and strength go together. You need both to "look" strong.
I'm not saying this proves anything about Batson, but he had us strong enough during our natty run. I doubt he forgot.

Don't believe you. And getting finished product or not these dudes are not in game shape early in the year and the DL and OL always look doughy, and get pushed around(it's not technique any more). Combine results also not exactly a great indicator outside guys that came in with great measurables can't recall a guy leaving Clemson with better numbers. Also I see awful technique when I watch the paw power hour crap, squats and clean technique are atrocious. If you really trained athletes you'd agree with that last point.

One indicator of a strength and conditioning program is the injury rate. Our 1981 NC team was remarkably injury free the entire season due to the program George Dostal put in place. I would venture to say that we had a very high injury rate this past season. Some of that is likely due to not having a lot of bench depth so players tire more and have difficulty in the second half. We have seen this growing injury rate for the past several seasons.

Batson hasn’t utilized triple extension Olympic exercises his whole career. He believes in loading squat and bench with as heavy as weights as possible and going through some auxiliary exercises like a circuit
We need a new vision in strength and conditioning that really believes in exercise science. Guys should be getting more explosive year after year, don’t think that’s been the case with the vast majority

Good evening, I will be the first to say that I am not a strength coach. I am however concerned that the number of injuries that have occurred over the last 3 seasons is unusually high. Something needs to be changed either in our off season/ in season strength and conditioning program or the way we conduct our practices. Far too many injuries are occurring and it showed up when we were playing with a lot of young , not ready, or not talented enough DL this year.
Have a good night!

I’ve done the routine given to players as they enter the program. This is completely untrue.
Power cleans are one of the three major lifts along with the squat and bench. You’ll find those three lifts are probably the staples of any good football strength and conditioning program.

You are correct he does use power cleans. But that’s it. No snatches, no clean and jerks. The most explosive Olympic lifts, Batson does not have in his program. Squats, high pulls, power cleans, dead lifts, bench press, board press, chain squats and chain bench, pull ups, and a bunch of auxiliary lifts.

I’d question any s&c staff that focused on those lifts over what Batson is doing. They are great for training power, but not great for training strength. Olympic lifters train squats and presses so that they can better do those you named.
They also are the most technical lifts you can do. The injuries would skyrocket just from the weight room alone.
I’m not saying Batson is perfect, but some of these criticisms and claims are just baseless.

100% NOT TRUE. Power Clean and Hang Clean
Jan 14, 2025, 11:42 PM

And variations of it have been used since and after I worked for him in the early 2000’s. The rep schemes use to be 10x2 for power and 5x3 for hang clean. Many players at the end of the 8 week cycle would clean their old 1 rep max plus for 5x3. He has used The Jammer machine as well as the Austin Leg drives too. ###### is only used as a warm up. Squat and Bench days are split into heavy days (using boards as well) and speed days using chains and bands.

Sounds like a typical Florida HS program.
I'm a fan of old guys like Tommy Moffit. 10x2 seems to excessive for football, more geared to training that specific lift for power. Agree or disagree?

The version I saw I can promise few HS, if any, are capable of. I’ve been doing strength training for two decades with a number of different modalities and I had to tap out after a few cycles through it. The volume and intensity is definitely for that of a young, elite level athlete. Specifically the type of young athlete that can make it to a D1 football level.
There’s a lot of volume, but you have to remember they’re not just trying to get these guys strong and explosive, they’re trying to put as much good weight on them in as they can in a short amount of time.

Good points. So is it possible that trying to put on so much weight, so fast, that this is causing injuries in our younger players?

I don’t personally think so. The average person running this type of weightlifting program over time, yes. The type of athletes that make it to a P4 football team, no.
Weightlifting, especially for power, comes with risk. When done properly, it reduces risk more than it causes it, but it doesn’t eliminate it.
These things are just luck based. Take the Haynes injury in the smu game for instance. No amount of s&c protects a knee from another grown man crashing into it at that angle. There’s so much inherent danger at every position of the game I’m amazed there aren’t more injuries than there already are. That alone speaks to s&c and the type of genetic freaks you see out there.

It’s so odd how Clellin, Vic, Austin and Myles were so strong but Denhoff and Hoffler are weak as water. It’s almost like they are different caliber athletes and players. Shame on Bateson for recruiting them….. oh wait
