So, did we need a 12-team Playoff to determine the best team in CFB this year?

Or would the 4-team model suffice?
I have an opinion, but I’m obviously withholding it…

If you want a legitimate national champion, yes.

12 is too many. 4 is fine with me. 8 would be better than 12.

Ohio St. probably wouldn't have made a four team playoff. And they've proven themselves to be the best. So maybe 12 teams isn't so bad. Not saying I was in favor of it, but seems it has some benefits.

You’re correct. Based on their ranking they would not have made top 4 and they’re clearly the best team this year.

I don’t disagree. But devils advocate, if they were clearly the best why wouldn’t they have made the 4 team?

Because the rankings are subjective.

Totally get your point. They didn't start showing how good they were until the playoffs. Guess that's why i have started to see the benefit of 12 team. Had it only been 4 teams we would have never known how good they really were. I'm sure there will be more situations like this in the future.

I thought 4 was good. 8 would be ok. 12 is too many and they’re already wanting to push it to 16. Greed is slaughtering the golden calf.

12 team is great. You have to look at the whole picture. With 4 weeks left in the regular season there were 20 plus teams with a chance to make the playoffs. That creates excitement with more fan bases.

That’s the biggest upshot I see - it’s an eyeballs and advertising boon. Revenue dollas.
As far as “determining” the champion of the sport, other methods would do just as well, methinks.

The 12 team system weeded out the pretenders. If we had a 4 team playoff, you can bet 2 of them would have been SEC teams.

Good point. The “best four teams” is only as pure a selection as the biases of a committee will permit.

OSU clearly earned it. They lost by 2 or 3 on the road to the #1 team and B10 champ and got upset by their rival... Besides that they have looked the part and moreso than ever in the playoffs. Even if ND made a miracle comeback . They would have clearly earned it and been the best.
I like 12 team model and would be in favor of 16 just bc it's entertaining. 4 team was fine but this is probably the first true champ of college football in history. It's crazy to think not that long ago, to win a title. All you had to do was be in the top five. Get a good bowl opponent, and win over the court of public opinion.

4 team playoff IMO would've been

#1 Oregon vs #4 Texas #2 Georgia vs #3 Notre Dame
I assume they would have rigged the rankings to avoid UGA vs Texas again.
Also assuming Penn State would've been punished and knocked out for losing in the B1G title game.
Ohio State almost certainly gets left out, and I think that's probably the biggest argument in favor of this system. Aside from the egg they laid vs Michigan, they've pretty much been the best team all year.

Of a random team to win due to some weird upset early in the process.
