Should be automatic that he will be “coach of the year” in the ACC. Player of the year might be a tougher call but the Tigers have candidates there too.

The voice of common sense and reason

says that all Clemson fans should be thrilled with the outstanding job coach Brownell has done this year, putting this team together and leading them to a great season so far, and coach deserves to be appropriatey recognized for it ... BUT ... that does not mean that he should be rewarded with a lengthy contract extension. No way, given his history here. If he comes back next year and makes the tourney again, and shows evidence that the corner has finally been turned, the yes, by all means, reward him with a big raise and extension then.

I still would not give him a big raise in base pay, but would be more than happy to see him get big incentive bonuses, like $1M for winning the ACCT, $2.5M for a Final Four appearance, $750K for ACC regular season championship, $500K for 25-win season. Also things like $100k for any ACC first team players, $50 for 2nd team, $25k for third-team; $250K for ACC COTY.

I'd go ahead and make the final4 appearance a 10 mil bonus....

as I don't see much danger in CBB hitting that incentive marker but if he does all the better. I mean has 2 mil a year provided a lot of incentive beyond pointing out the higher paid coaches salaries. Maybe along with the 10mil throw in a football autographed by Dabo & the team—

Unlike most on this board, I've always respected Coach Brownell's contributions to Clemson, considering the little support he's received since Day one from both Clemson fans and the Clemson Administration. AD Neff was the first to actually publicly say that the Basketball program needed more funds to at least bring us up to the ACC "average" in financial support to the Basketball program. Furthermore, AD Neff immediately increased that financial support. Coach Brownell immediately used this increase to upgrade the assistant coaches he had on staff. The difference in our record this year can be seen, as well as the development and improvement of both our inexperienced and our veteran players.

I definitely believe Coach Brownell deserves & needs to be rewarded for the turn-around this year. However, I don't believe he deserves a long-term extension. I totally agree with what AD Neff stated when he came on board regarding the Coach Brownell & the Basketball program. As a reminder, he stated that the Basketball program immediately needed more financial support, and he immediately provided it. However, he also said that we needed to see immediate & apparent improvement in the program with a "consistent" return to the NCAA Tournament.

Most on this board thought AD Neff meant a return to the NCAA Tournament this year. Maybe that is what AD Neff meant. However, I interpreted it differently--I interpreted it to mean he wanted to see immediate improvement in our play and in the development of our players--leading to the consistent return of our teams to the NCAA Tournament in the "near term". I believe Coach Brownell & his staff have done that this year whether we make the NCAA Tournament or not. Although I definitely believe our team deserves to be in the tournament, I'm not yet convinced that the NCAA criteria for choosing teams is clear for anybody at this stage! So, we may still not make the tournament this year. However, I definitely saw the improvement that I expected and wanted to see "this year."

So, I definitely believe Coach Brownell & his staff deserve at least another year to demonstrate we're on the right path to improvement and consistent play. However, no long term contract is deserved at this time. Coach Brownell's staff has to prove they can produce a reliable & consistent product for more than a year. And considering the key elements that will be missing next year (Tyson, Galloway, etc.), they'll be hard pressed to show that consistent play (and consistent results) next year, particularly if those results mean inclusion in next year's NCAA Tournament. That's MHO!
