Since 2006....

Apr 29, 2023, 6:53 PM

Other than Clemson (2016 & 2018), Ohio State is the only school to win a National Championship in football (2014) that is not in the SEC. That's 17 years.

Edit.... forgot FSU in 2013. Thanks to the person that pointed this out down below.

Things will always change, and I think the ACC is too far behind the SEC and Big 10 to exist much longer, but if we leave, I do hope we go to the SEC. More natural rivalries and better to compete in the regions where we recruit.

Clemson has more than held its own against the SEC, but I don't think you can logically argue that the SEC is not the best college football conference. As much as I wish we scheduled some home and home vs the Big 10 like OSU, Michigan or PSU, I am not excited about having to play half our games up north.

And expansion is all about money.... market share and the ability to sell commercials for more money. As strong as Clemson is, it doesn't have a large alumni base compared to many larger public universities. I do think the addition of so many women's olympic sports puts us in line to get AAU membership, which is a requirement for the Big 10, I just don't think we bring the kind of increase in market share that adding a UNC, BC or another ACC school in a large metropolitan area.

We do consistently rank in some of the top college games as far as viewership, so maybe my comment about being in a small town with a smaller alumni base could be wrong. I do hope we leave the ACC, if we do, I just hope its the SEC.

It would be funny because the coots would then have to root for us. It just means more and all that.

It’s not reciprocal because we’ve never been conference fans, so they can suck it.

At the top level of CFB I think conferences will eventually be dead so I don’t think it will matter in the end. Either we are in that group or not…

Great points all around. We would probably benefit more in the big 10, but man it would be nice to shut the SEC fans up. When you really look at it, if we were in the SEC east, UGA currently would be the only program consistently to worry about. Playing a few West teams like miss st. And Arkansas with the occasional lsu and Auburn wouldn't be dramatically different.

We have been scheduling Auburn, A&Ms and UGAs in our historic run. The games we've played against high FSU, Lamar's Louisville and ND are just as tough as we would have have faced. We would still win the national title in 16 and 18 in the SEC.

Bring it

I agree. Some of the B1G games would be fun.. but there would be some rough ones too.
For one thing, It would bring Maryland back into our lives.. no thanks.
Rutgers? Northwestern?
Sure the SEC has a few down teams but even the middle-ground games would be fun trips/interesting.
Ole Miss.. Arkansas... it just is a lot better match than the B1G.
For one thing I cant believe Clemson hasnt played Florida since 1961.. I mean seriously how does that happen? Not a bowl game or anything in 42 years????
