Should we play more zone D?

I know zone D has gone away for the most part, mainly because good shooters can consistently hit shots from so far out.

But, we got out-quicked vs Memphis and Miami. Chase is probably our best defender but Pack killed him/us with his penetration Wed. Beadle may have been able to guard Pack but he is so inconsistent on offense.

Defensive quickness may be our weakest link this year, especially Wiggins (has to guard smaller and quicker small forwatds) and Girard.

We played some zone in the 2nd half but Miami still killed us as their hot-shooting continued.

I'm mixed on this.

More zone or not?

IMO one of BB’s biggest in game coaching weaknesses, over his career at Clemson, has been his unwillingness to switch defenses. It has only been in the last several years that BB has been willing to even switch to a zone defense. He is uncomfortable playing a zone because he really doesn’t seem to know how to teach it. Never mind trying a half court trap, or play any type of pressure defense in the back court. So the simple answer is yes we need to play more zone defense. With a zone you can force the opposing team further out on the perimeter, not to mention protect a player like PJ in foul trouble. But the most effective thing about switching defenses is it should take your opponent some time and energy to figure out what defense you are in as they come into the front court on a possession. It gives them something to think about. I would like to see us change defenses numerous times in a game to try and gain an advantage or change the momentum.

Yes, Cliff Ellis used several defenses that kept teams off balance. You have to cause some of these great shooters to think to get them out of rhythm. These good players of today are unbelievable shooters. They want to play offense but not defense. B Knight made a living with great defense. Brad used to be known for defense but over last couple years we have lost that defensive edge.

Sort of a hybrid when we start to get winded.

A match up zone is a great defense. Hard for your opponent to tell what you are playing.

I have the kids i coach run that, still allows them to trap and create some chaos when the opportunity is there.

Also helps you when you are in foul trouble. I believe that is why BB switched to it in the Miami game. Trying to protect Hall.

When we have used it it seems to work more often than not but Coach has used it less than 10 possessions(?) so far this season- against Memphis and Miami, if I'm not mistaken.

The season is always a work in progress they may look at tape and utilize more going forward. Personally I'm a fan of it because our perimeter D had been lacking at times and oppoasing guard able to work an offense in too close, too often.

Historically tournament teams have great guards

We have some nice players at guard but not elite. This creates a ceiling for the team. Opponents seem to take advantage as the game progresses. Maybe home court can give us a boost defensively. Maybe changing defenses would help but the talent difference still exists.
