Shipley Either Gassed or Covering Football

Slowed him down on that 57-yard run. Looked it up. St-Juste #25, who tackled him, ran 4.52 in 40. Shipley ran a 4.39. Shipley had step on all and would have scored had he not covered ball. He needed more confidence in his speed.

Agreed most likely that ball security led to him being caught at the very end.

However - considering how many carries he had during the year (30) - I can see why he wanted to show the coaches he was all about ball security

Building up those deposits in the trust bank. Or trying to make his way into the ….

For RBs overall (bith college and pro), breakaway speed, although nice, is not at the very top of desired RB attributes.

Vision.
Quick cuts to hit the hole.
Ability to cut when in the hole.
Ball security.
Pass catching / hands.
Breaking tackles.
Pass protection.

Then comes breakaway speed.

I think he was looking at the jumbo=tron and misjudged how quickly those guys were catching him, covered it up and that caused him to slow down more. I think if he had waited another 2-3yds to cover it up he could have lept into the EZ.

But I 100% think he knew it was better to get tackled at the 4yd line than to fumble in THE BIGGEST spotlight of his career.

He also looked over his shoulder early in the run. That probably cost him a step.

Absolutely, a fumble would have been terrible!
Covering the ball, and scoring on another run burned more time, and made sense.

Do you just not remember coaches and players saying Ship was one of the fastest players on the team? I swear some of guys who claim to be fans are so quick to dump on players whose ability you couldn't live up to if there were 3 of you. It was obvious he lost speed covering the ball up. Obviously he felt those guys coming from behind and wasn't about to give points up due to fumbling it which he had issues at Clemson doing. Maybe you could live up to them considering you lift 500 lbs.

It always looked to me as though Ship was fast out of the blocks but topped out ~20 yards.

A terrific initial burst might well carry his 40 clocked speed to a very good number. I’ve never seen him as being a true break away guy in college, which doesn’t make him a bad player.

In in contrast, Nate Wiggins had a great 40:time. I’d wager that Wiggins has a slower 20:yard time than Ship.

With both Ship and Wiggins being clocked starting at 20 yards into their sprint, Wiggins would blow Ship away between 20 yards and 100 yards.

I don't think Shipley is slow by any means..

that said...those Clemson Pro Day #s, particularly 40 times, are highly questionable. Combine #s at any school's pro day should be viewed as 'suspect'.

Big time effort, but he chose the wisest option between trying to make it to the endzone or wrapping up the ball.

Guy put a 57 yard run in the books in a playoff game then I read many slightly negative observations.

Weird.

Barkley handled it better.

"On a first-and-10 with a little under five minutes of play remaining, Shipley found a crease in the defense and scampered for a 57-yard run down to the Washington 7-yard line.

Three plays later, Shipley punched in a two-yard touchdown for his first career touchdown.

Barkley went viral for being the first person to congratulate Shipley, running from the sideline to the end zone to greet him."

ball handling, ball security was a clear objective here. IMO he took one for the team, which subsequently paid off two plays later.

Awesome to see him become a factor like he's showing now. The Eagles can suck it but pulling for them nonetheless in the LIX.

I think Shipley has been doubly drilled on his fumblitis and did not want to be the reason for losing a big play that would have benched him. I have watched that video over and over and he definitely slowed down when he covered up to protect from having the ball punched out. To me it was the smartest running I have seen him do.

There is a diference between top end speed (aka fast) and quickness (acceleration)

Ship ran a 4.39 at proday, that's more quickness/acceleration than top end speed.

He is more quick than he is fast

than a Pro-Day 40 time. They are notoriously friendlier than a true NFL combine 40 time, which is why some guys skip the NFL combine 40 and run it at their school's pro-day (like Shipley did).

Starts fast but hits his rev limiter quickly. He was always more of a grinding James Davis style runner and it works for him.

He was rewarded for his selfless act of securing the ball and given another chance to punch it in and he did just that. Even Saquan Barkley gave him props in post game interview.
