Serious question. Why would someone take DJ from portal

Any power 5 team will be evaluating his last two years. From a pure football evaluation standpoint, what would they see that could help their team. He is not a dual threat. And he is generally not an extremely accurate passer. Just trying to see how some of the schools some here are speculating on (ND, UCLA) would think he could start there. Thoughts?

Because he has all the physical tools and it could be that he was a square peg in the round hole of our offensive scheme.
Someone will look at all the raw talent and say 'I can do a lot with that'.

But wouldn't "raw talent" be able to hit the screen passes, the short passes when he has time that he throws in the dirt, etc? I hear your point - but I guess I have not seen the skill that is there but just not for our system.

Maybe... maybe not? DJ's got a big arm, but seems to struggle on the 'make a quick decision and deliver a catchable short ball' (what we base a lot of our offense on).
His deep throws, when he throws them, are often better or at least it seems to me.
I would be much more worried about the mental aspect of his game than any physical limitations. But not following Trevor and having all the expectations from being the starter at Clemson might help reinvigorate him as well.

The biggest rumor I am hearing is Ohio St. Ryan Day is supposedly a QB guru who feels he can correct DJ’s footwork & get his brother as a package deal.

If he gets in a West Coast system with an OL that can protect the pocket, he has the arm to be very dangerous. RPO was never his strength but our system forced him into something that just wasn't a good fit for him.

One of 2 reasons.
#1. He's a package deal with his brother who does look like a very good DE.
#2. They think they can fix his fundamental issues and take advantage of the insane arm strength he has.

Maybe they see his freshman tape and figure right coaches, environment and system can get him back to the 5 star everyone wanted. Also it would probably help land his brother.

Because they want his brother. Also, DJ might do well in a different system. He isn't meant for the RPO in my opinion.

Who knows? The earliest footage of him on youtube shows him snapping the ball, turning his hips and eyes to his intended receiver and staring at him until he breaks open. If that didnt happen, he takes the run. At Clemson he misses high percentage passes, had no touch and all the other problems all after being in the system for a long time. I guess someone still thinks he can unlearn habits and rebuild.

Put DJ in a system where he has a great Oline and does not have to make read option or RPO reads and he might be pretty serviceable.
UCLA is the school you hear a lot. You have to make a lot of reads in the run game there.

Because to me it’s all mental. We saw what he was capable of in 2020. I don’t know that any team should go all in with DJ to be their starter but I’d take a chance with him in my QB room. He’s got the tools and the physical talent, he’s just got to get it right upstairs l.

To get his little brother. Has happened frequently in the past. If I recall, Keenan Allen was interested in Clemson coming out of high school but we wouldn't take his older brother who was transferring from some school up north. So Allen ended up at Cal.
