re: serious question about targeting calls

Jan 13, 2015, 12:06 PM

I saw several instances in the championship game last night where defensive players used their helmets to shake the ball loose and cause a fumble. The way I understand it, using your helmet in such a manner constitutes "targeting" because if the players helmet misses the ball someone's getting cracked ribs, i.e. using one's helmet as a weapon. Whereas a Clemson defender can brush the shoulder pad of a quarterback with his helmet and get thrown out of the game. What am I missing in understanding this penalty?

ribs aren't located above the shoulder pads.

ribs are behind the ball

The ribs are behind where the receiver cradles the ball.

Helmet on the ball is ok snd no matter how you secure 5he ball if ti finds the helmet it will pop out of there

There was targeting on OSU's 2nd TD to Vanett.

Also, it seems to me the only call it when receivers are going over the middle, however in NFL and pros they ignore things like defensive players flying in after a guy is already down, or about to go down and leading with head.
