we play now have mostly senior starters. No rebuilding anymore for most of these guys.

Juniors and seniors really. It's also why some teams get caught in an endless loop of having to bring in large transfer classes every year. That leads to zero continuity and a bit of a roller coaster ride. Hard to build any chemistry when every year the team is full of strangers.

True, but most of the teams realize they're not competing with 2 and low 3* players... yes, they're some great 3* talent out there but all you end up doing is investing 2-3 years in the kid. Said kid is going to transfer and get a pay-day.. so you're better off rolling the dice.

But a good coach can make the portal work.

The elite teams have been selective and effective. Can you imagine a NFL team that only used the draft and ignored free agents?

I thought everybody on tnet said the reason for not winning was because of not using the portal. What wrong with Florida State. I think just about the whole team came from the portal.

Do you think our team would be better with 4-5 additional Will Heldt type players?

Maybe but you can't make someone come to play for you that doesn't want to come to Clemson. I'm sure Dabo has tried to get some to come. Better off without them if they don't want to be at Clemson.

Ignoring the fact that about half of the players in the portal have thrown their scholarship away, since they will never be offered a position at any other school (they're just not as good as they think they are)...

So we just need to identify the best of the players in the portal who:

* fill some gaps in our lineup

AND

* are not "problem children" on a path to drugs, DUI, arrests, or locker-room cancer...
* are willing to fill those gaps, even if the gaps are 2nd and 3rd on the depth chart
* are willing to sign without any guarantee of playing time unless they earn it
* are willing to sign without up-front NIL guarantees
* want to be at Clemson instead of somewhere else (any of the above being more important)

Pretty sure Dabo would sign these kids in a heartbeat. Why wouldn't he?

People acting like the portal is like the menu at a Chinese restaurant..."I'll take that WR, and these two OL, please, oh, and can you add that DB, too?"

And this will continue because there is more parity in college football than ever before. Any school can pick up the right pieces from the portal and go from good to champion if they can stay healthy in any given season. Any great team can also lose players to graduation or the portal and fall drastically from year to year. This is the new world order of college football. It’s not a lot different than a MLB team buying a World Series championship. Like the Florida Marlins winning the World Series in 1997 and then going 54-108 the next season.

With all this Penn St drama, can Tom Allen attract some of their decommits?? Kemon Spell will be a great RB, and Khalil Taylor / Matt Seig - it’s a big list of great athletes.

After 65 years, it's hard being a Marshall fan. The prior two years, between freshmen and transfers in there were over 60 new players each year. With the coach leaving last year, with graduations and transfers out it jumped to 80 this year.

It's killing the non-P4 teams. They take a chance on a kid without big time offers, coach them up, just as soon as they blossom someone steals them. I blame the system, not the players. I would have transferred from Clemson for a chunk of change.

I guess it helps program sales. "Get your program here. Can't tell the players from the fans without your program." Sheesh.
