A lot of folks are asking how teams are adding players to their rosters. With the advent of NIL, are any teams bound by their scholarship limits anymore? Can ONLY scholarship players play? My understanding is that you don't need an active scholarship to play only NCAA eligibility. Couldn't these teams with aggressive NIL money/portal policies just have the NIL collective pay the student athlete's tuition and save a scholarship for a student athlete who cannot pull such a strong NIL deal?
No, you don't have to have a scholarship to play. Walk-ons have the same eligibility. BYU's football team has an NIL deal that pays every walk-on the equivalent of a full scholarship.
Yes. The player could use income derived from NIL collective payments to then personally pay for his tuition and fees. He'll just need enough dough left over to pay any income tax due on these NIL payments, but that would all be factored in when the NIL is paying him. It's just $ and simple accounting. Some collectives already do this for preferred walk-ons to add depth. A simple and legal method to fully fund a roster past the current NCAA scholly limit. On a side note, you can free up that Venables scholly - I bet dad can handle the tuition.
