Dabo Swinney’s last five assistant hires:
1. Nick Eason – DTs coach (Auburn): Proven recruiter with NFL experience.
2. Garrett Riley – OC (TCU): 2022 Broyles Award winner; offensive innovator.
3. Matt Luke – OL coach (via UGA): National title-winning coach with SEC pedigree.
4. Chris Rumph – DEs coach (NFL): Veteran coach with college and pro success.
5. Tom Allen – DC (Penn State): Former Indiana HC with defensive expertise.
All external, all from Power Five/NFL, with two former head coaches.

After looking at these last 5 hires I am trying to figure how Wes and Conn got selected as Co-DC's.

Both Venables trained on the D side and counting on continuity and advances in those ranks? Worked well on the offensive front post-Morris.

If that is the case Reed was hired only 1 year after Venables with a better resume' than Wes & Conn combined so I really don't think that was the case. As far as Eason he too had better credentials than both Wes & Conn and I'm quite sure he was smart enough to learn how the defense operated under Venables. But I am open to hearing other alternative theories behind the selection of Wes & Conn over Reed & Eason.

Goodwin was clearly instrumental in drawing up winning packages for the whole shebang. Could the others? He didn't implement them well this season regardless so here we are.

I think neither of us know the capabilities of others on the staff but we do know that Reed & Eason were more qualified to be given the opportunity to be the DC than Wes & Conn. But for some reason, that we want to act like we don't know but we really just dont want to admit, Dabo disregarded those qualifications and selected the 2 coaches with the lesser qualifications and gave them the opportunity to be DC's. Then once the 2 lesser qualified defensive coaches fail miserably, instead of giving the 2 more qualified coaches, who were previously overlooked, an opportunity he selects a new external coach to bring in. I am amazed how no one on TNet wants to admit what is relatively obvious.

You have no idea other than coaching history whether or not Eason and Reed are qualified or even want the DC job. Dabo may have other criteria other than how long they have coached a position group. Dabo may also want experience forming a game plan which maybe neither has. It's ridiculous to vilainize Dabo for his decisions when you do not know all the aspects that went into them.
If Wes had led our defense to consistently be in the top 10 in every category for 10 years, would Dabo's choice have been bad?
If hiring Tom Allen doesn't lead to the change we hope, would Dabo's choice have been bad?
You cannot look at the outcome of the decision to evaluate whether the decision itself was a good one.
Here is another non-coaching scenario:
You evaluate that you have a 5% chance a business deal will work out in your favor and 95% chance it would not. You decide not to take the risk and it ultimately proves out that it would have worked out well. When you get the next business deal that you think has a 5% chance of working in your favor, do you decide to take the risk knowing the last one would have worked out for you or do you know that you made the right choice the time before and still avoid the risky business choice?

I agree with you that Dabo did have other criteria for his decision-making of selecting Wes and Conn instead of Eason and Reed. It's pretty obvious it wasn't just related to football. Like it, or not it's plain for the eyes to see. As much as people on this message board want to put on blinders and act like it's non-existent the appearance is what it is. If you think other coaches don't see it and use it when it comes to negative recruiting your sadly mistaken. Watch how certain high school coaches within the state of South Carolina will begin to dissaude players from attending Clemson. All I'm stating what is quietly being said in hushed tones in the coaching circles.

As that is what you are clearly suggesting.
And why are you claiming to be a Clemson fan if you believe the HC hires based on race? That would indict the entire athletic department as well. If I felt the way you do, I would never pull for Clemson football until the entire athletic program was rebuilt.

I've seen worse defensive hires through the years than Goodwin.
Of course, this is coming from a guy who once hired a "highly qualified" candidate from Utah, who spent his days walking around our office building smoking cigarettes and talking to himself. And THAT took 6 months to get rid of. 🤔

Clemson is paying several former assistants buyouts because of Dabos recent mind boggling hires . For 11 million per year you would hope he would have made smarter business decisions . The decisions to hire Goodwin and make Conn a co defensive coordinator was just dumb . How do you hand the keys of a Clemson defense over to such inexperienced guys like that ? Dabo has made some good hires since but those 2 just outright stink . He should be financially responsible for those mistakes .
