We're unapologetic water people and Lake Hartwell is our big liquid playground.
We spend a good part of our time up at the Clemson end of the lake on the Seneca branch.
If you navigate those particular waters, Death Valley's often in view with those massive letters that spell
"C-L-E-M-S-O-N"
on both upper decks, and the pennants are always there at the top. And depending on where you are, the Oculus comes into view, too.
(The whole scene positively pi**es excellence.)
Today as we rolled on by there, "Tuesday's Gone" came on the ol' mix tape.
And it birthed a question for all you Clemson Tigers of the '70s and early '80s:
When you hear Skynyrd, what (if any) Clemson memory comes to mind?

crash report from that bad, bad, very bad day in Oct. '77 down in Mississippi.
What I didn't know is that they'd taken off from Greenville city airport having just played Greenville Memorial Coliseum.
Dern.

Rickey Medlocke who came on later might be the best player the genre has ever seen.

My mom died back in 2017, so I flew home for the service. On my way back to catch my flight out of GSP, Simple Man came on the radio and I completely lost it.
Simple Man will always have a special place in my heart.

As a student there in the early 70s, Cheech and Chong has a concert at Littlejohn. Marshall Tucker opened for them and when they finished, the promoter came on stage to introduce a new band from Jacksonville who had just released their first album “Pronounced”. Still the best performance of Free Bird that I have ever heard!

Skynyrd doesn't bring back good Clemson memories for me. It brings back the nightmare of the 08 opener in ATL against Bama when they blared Skynyrd over the audio system after our embarrassing loss.
For me, it's Graham Colton & Life Is What You Make It...2016. Holding my 4 month old, RSV sickened daughter in my arms in silence as Watson & his troops marched down the field and found a miracle in the arms of Renfrow. I will NEVER forget that moment and that song was used in commercials for the school that year I believe.

A local radio station would have listeners recommend a song and at the end of the show they would give the results and play that song. I can’t remember the winning streak for FREE BIRD, but it was always AWESOME 😎
