Riley on Tristan Smith

I asked Garrett Riley what WR Tristan Smith has to do to get on the field more, and he said Tristan has done a good job the last few weeks of doing the little things and paying attention to detail, which allows him to get on the field. He also said Smith has surprised them with how good he is with the ball in his hands. Sounds like he will be more of a part of the offense

Agreed. Had all spring and fall camp to realize this and it's taken this long into the season to wake up to Tristans play. And to still take him out immediately after he makes a big play is just...it says a lot.

Is it because our position coaches haven’t had enough time to help him regress and become a worse wr?

Why would the coaches be surprised by anything he can do? That's supposed to be one of the benefits of the portal; you know what you're getting

Apparently the coaches weren't watching the spring game either. It's not like he had the most receiving yards.

I feel like we have too many WRs being rotated in. Find 5 or 6 and go with them for the entire game.

They just now realized that?!? Wow...that explains a LOT. He is literally the only WR who plays physically at the point of attack. We desperately need that spark right now.

They keep saying they need to do the little things right but I’m telling you the guys capable of doing the big things right should be getting time. Catch contested balls and run after the catch. Hit the hole explosively and run through a tackle. Block the man nearest the ball who presents the greatest threat of disrupting a good play. Shed a block and find the ball. Hit and drive through a ball carrier in the midsection instead of trying to wrap them up high where they are widest. Do the big things first and then you can worry about the little things.

On defense Alexander needs to see the field a lot more. It's criminal that he's not seeing the field more when you have guys lollygagging out there.

Nope!
The best players don't play. The ones who "earn it" in Dabos eyes are the ones who get the snaps.
Case and point Cole Turner.

Wow. Didn't realize all the former players and coaches' kids on the staff. Maybe this is normal in football, but it is not what those of us in the private sector are used to seeing...

Yup. Both Drew and Will on staff, and crazy amount of former players too. You don’t think they’ll go along with wherever Dabo leads them? Maybe it’s time for some fresh perspectives? The current culture has grown pretty bland. Personally, I like my foods to have many flavors. You would never see this type of hiring in private industry. Or if you do, the workplace culture is usually a toxic environment.

Most companies have set rules against nepotism and employee relationships. However, I have personally witnessed violations. CEO’s have hired children or lovers. Kohl’s had to fire it ceo that came from Walmart because he entered into business contracts with a former lover. I had a bank ceo hire his son and friends kids. Many times they don’t report to them. But hard to work with them for fear of retribution.

And Will is an assistant TE coach...
Can't make this up. Am I missing something, or does being a holder for 4 years have no correlation with being a WR/TE beyond the fact that they also put pads and a uniform on?

All off season we heard about 2 waves of terror but only 3 players(Wesco, Randall & Klubnik) have scored tds in 4 games and Cade's was a goal line qb sneak. Not a good sign for balance, versatility or explosiveness

They act like he has all this time to develop the way they want him to, but the reality is he only has eight or nine more games. From everything I’ve seen he’s more than far enough along compared to the others we have.

So they just now realized this?
After spring practice and spring ball… after summer workouts… after fall camp and scrimmages… after the first 4 games…
And the worst part… he’s a transfer with 3 years of tape.
That’s the whole point of the portal… you know and see on tape what you’re getting.
My goodness this staff is completely incompetent.
They have no idea what a real football player looks like.

That's very telling on Clemson's inexperienced ( former players, family, and friends ) coaching staff, that Heldt, Tristan, and Alexander arrive and out performs seasoned Clemson players.
