August 25 2008: The Day College Football Died.

On August 25 2008 ESPN signed a 15 year deal with the SEC worth 2 billion to televise football, basketball, and women's sports. From that day till this College Football has seen a slow and steady decline in the quality of the sport. This media deal was the catalyst that led to conference realignments, NIL, Transfer Portal, Conference Networks (August 14 2014, SEC Network goes on air), and narrative driven sports reporting. College football no longer resembles the sport many us grew up with and has quickly become the WWE where outcomes are guaranteed for those associated with the right conferences. The rest are "also rans" spinning their wheels to keep the machine running. The sport is dead and just because we see the corpse twitching doesn't mean it's alive.

Yesterday was an amazing day of college football. I enjoyed every second of it.

The money is silly stupid, and we need to fix the Transfer Portal.

But College Football is alive and well!

People felt the same way about wrestling in 90s and then we wound up with WWE. The writing is on the wall, and history has already told us the outcome.

That was 16 years ago

I would say it’s been a pretty great 16 years of college football since then.

That helped facilitate it and the system and sport are rigged towards ESPN's

bedfellow, but the day that college football died was when PFP, disguised as NIL, took off in conjunction with unrestricted free agency, disguised as the transfer portal. I don't have an exact date for you on that. But college football became no more, at least at the power 4 level.
