They were becoming gazillionaires long before the players jumped into the money game. Huge long-term contracts with massive buyouts. And the kids got a scholarship and some perks. Yeah, I know, I'd have taken that in a heartbeat too. Like many reading this, it was a struggle just to attend Clemson as an instate student. I worked in cotton mills with no AC, painted houses, etc, to help pay for it.

But the players were the ones bringing in all the jack. And risking injuries that may affect them the rest of their lives. In hindsight, I guess it was only a matter of time before they wanted a bigger piece of the pie.

The schools could have got in front of all this and sweetened the pot, but they held firm. So here we are.

I'm really not trying to be critical of the coaching staff, just taking a view

from 40,000 feet of the money factor. There was no trickle-down to the ones driving revenue. (Voodoo economics, $1 to GWB1, LOL). Nobody comes to games to watch the head coach walk the sidelines, they come to watch the players. Again, in hindsight, wasn't it inevitable that they'd want to be compensated somehow. You know, capitalism and all that.

So: free tuition, free room and board, free dietitians, free trainers, free medical, all athletic clothes supplied, $200k of untaxed benefits…not trickle down? I agree it is not $1Million but let’s not wander too far from the “collegiate athlete” title in an amateur sport. Coaches always got paid (even Olympic coaches)….now I do agree the current salaries of coaches is way out of whack. Agree that NCAA was absolutely nuts in pinging athletes for accepting sandwiches at tailgates, limiting pages in programs etc…and there was a middle solution but never was implemented and Wild West show is here and the sport has changed whether anyone likes it or not…

Completely agree.

And while I like Dabo, he has reached out for every penny too. He is not above boosting his bank account with the ridiculous money in college football today. And while his devotion to the complete student-athlete that he preaches about a lot is commendable, turning 100 handpicked high school kids into college graduates and fine young men is not an $11,500,000 job. If it’s that important, I would be happy to recruit 100 valedictorians with 30+ ACT scores and put them on scholarship at Clemson and graduate them for a lot less $11,500,000. Give me that job any day.

The point is Dabo gets paid to win. No one really cares or wants to hear about the rest.

Not true. This alumnus does care about academics and the character of the athletes that represent my alma mater.

In most areas of internal corruption and the failure of any formerly successful business...it's follow the money

I blame Spurrier.
