Recruiting

Is there some prize for the school that makes many recruits' list of final choices ... typically four ... and then going into the days that the kids announce their selection, whiffs time after time after time?

Actually there is. It’s beating your state rivals in every sport that counts outside wimmens basketball every year on a consistent basis!

......and when you say "wimmens" you are using the term very loosely!! They don't even know what one is down there.

It’s pretty always been that way as we are typically ranked 8-14 in recruiting under Dabo. The only real difference is we have not been able to attract a top shelf QB the last 2-3 years

Top shelf QB in his backyard and won’t offer him. I’ll take that kid over Klubnik any day. Cutter Woods is a stud and Dabo thinks Hebert and Vizina are the future. Clemson has no QB for next 4-6 years.

CUTTER WOODS IS A GOOD HIGH SCHOOL QB. LONG WAY TO DETERMINE HIS STUDNESS.

It's also important to note that the receiver group dropped way off as well during that same timespan. The overall receiver play has been downright terrible for 3 straight seasons now. The o-line also got a lot worse. It was never elite to begin with, even during the championship years, but it was a lot better than it's been the past 3 years.

I think the good news is this:

After a shaky first year under Goodwin, the defense has since made some big improvements, and they still look very good. They have also reloaded with what looks like a great crop of young talent.

The Tigers should have a great RB1 this year in Mafah. And he's got some younger backs behind him on the depth chart in Adams and Eziomume who seem like they've got a lot of potential.

After struggling to make an impact early, Jake Briningstool really emerged in the second half of last season and showed us the type of player we all know he can be. You'd think he should at least be a good primary option at tight end, and the TE room has great depth now with Olsen Patt-Henry, Christian Bentancur, and Josh Sapp all available as well.

For the first time in years, we have real, tangible evidence to suggest that the wide receiving core will be better this season. I think the departure of Beaux Collins will be addition by subtraction. And now there's actually some proven depth and talent in the room that should be at least 7 quality players deep. Those 7 being Antonio Williams, TJ Moore, Tyler Brown, Adam Randall, Troy Stellato, Bryant Wesco, and Cole Turner. Williams, Brown, and to a lesser extent Stellato all proved that they could make catches and be impactful playmakers with the ball when they were on the field and healthy. That's something you never really saw from guys like Collins.

Cole Turner and Adam Randall have been much less consistent but have at least shown flashes of great ability during games. The common theme among all 5 of those guys has been health. They've all struggled to stay on the field. If they can all just stay healthy this season, the Tigers ought to have a really good receiving group. And obviously, Moore and Wesco are immense talents, they're just young and completely unproven at the college level as of yet, so time will tell on them. But they are the most highly touted WR prospects that have come through in several years. So the bottom line is, the wide receiving group, which has been one of the team's biggest weaknesses for years now, is finally showing signs of substantial improvement in both quality and depth. I think the key is going to be whether or not they can stay on the field.

The bad news is this:

Despite the great progress that Matt Luke has already made in recruiting, he's not going to be able to fix everything overnight. The o-line still looks thin and very suspect. Other than the coaching change, there's little evidence that the quality of the o-line has actually improved much, at least in terms of this immediate season. And as we all saw last year, the poor line play was arguably what hurt the team the most.

The variable no one is talking about is kicker. We all remember what happened at the start of last year with Robert Gunn. And Jonathan Weitz has exhausted his eligibility, so he won't be here to save him this season. The Tigers do have talented freshman Nolan Hauser in the fold, but of course he's still completely green when it comes to college play. Despite his struggles last year, Gunn should still have great potential, and he's still young. And in fairness, asking a freshman to start right out of the gate at kicker is big challenge, especially in high pressure close game situations like Duke and FSU. But the point is, despite the talent, Gunn has had his struggles and Hauser is completely unproven as of yet. We still really don't know which one of them will be the starting kicker. We all know how crucially important a reliable kicker is, and right now, that position is still a question mark for the Tigers.

Recruiting wise weee have the best Offensive line we’ve ever had, so this might be the year they mature with a new head coach.

Forever TAMU and UTex have had more raw money than everyone else except maybe USC and ND and they still buy no natties...TAMU none modern era...UT 3 only one lately...it ain't all $$$!
