Really disconcerting that Dabo/Spiller dont use #2 RB

A few times to spell Mafah especially since it’s apparent that he is either slightly injured or beat up.
Saying, our two alternates are speedy, have different styles, hit the holes well and have been steady vs the fumble.
What’s the issue from our coaches, IYO?

Pitt has aggressive pass rush and employs a lot of blitzes and the OL was in worse than piecemeal shape-they were playing positions they hadn’t played in years.
You keep your best blocker in in Mafah, who knows the schemes and has the size to take on a blitzing lb. Otherwise your qb gets killed and you definitely lose. It’s the best decision to make in a bad situation. Simple as that.

Mafah missed several pickups and two backs or using back can do the same thing.
Don't oversimplify the options. We knew we would be thin this week at online.

It's not because, for 3 years, they didn't sign a quality back? Are you guys insane?
Anyone with an objective eye can see this is the fault of recruiting. UGA lost ETN (portal transfer) and had a solid backup that might even be better.
You guys are tripping over yourselves to justify this roster mismanagement.

Disconcerting is the coaches don't have a viable backup 10 games into the season. The fact that Mafah is apparently hurt and still wants to play says all you need to know about his heart. Now it's up to the coaches to get him some help.

More that continuity is so important on offense. It only takes one player out of eleven not doing his job and the play doesn’t work. We already had multiple changes on the line, so keeping starters in other key positions is critical.

There are strengths and weaknesses for all players, no matter how talented or well coached. And there is always a learning curve on playing a new position. I’m sure you are a great driver, you have probably been doing it for many years, but if you travel to England there is a learning curve. You are more tentative, cautious, etc… Same driving principles in play, you’re just on a different side of the road.
So with the linemen aying so many different positions, you try and keep as many constants in place around them as possible. Mafah may be the best blocker, so he was left in, and he delivered on the go ahead touchdown. We won, in part thanks to him. That’s a success, not a failure.

1) We left our starting RB in during our game against Pitt. 2) He had a critical block in the go ahead TD run. 3) This is evidence our recruiting/development has fallen off. 4) I can no longer talk about a subject you disagree with me on.

Clemson’s running back recruiting has been a disaster for years, and now we’re stuck running Mafah into the ground because there’s no depth. This is exactly what some of us have been saying all along, but you’ve always been quick to defend the staff and say there’s “nothing to see here.” Well, here we are—thin at RB, no real plan to fix it, and the program hasn’t been the same since 2018. But sure, keep telling us everything’s fine while we watch the wheels come off.

And I think you misquoted me. I don’t know that I’ve ever said that. Lastly, I haven’t said everything is fine once in this thread. A question was posed about our RB situation in the Pitt game so we’re talking about it.

No, the decline isn’t just RB recruiting—it’s part of a bigger pattern of roster mismanagement. The RB situation just happens to be one of the most obvious examples because we’ve got no depth, and it’s showing every week. You might not have said “everything is fine” in this thread, but you’ve been quick to defend the staff on recruiting issues in the past. So if it’s not fine now, what’s changed? It feels like some folks are just now noticing what’s been obvious to others for years.

I do this because they know more about football than me, they know more about our roster than me, and they know more about our recruiting than me. If you are going to pay someone $11,000,000.00 a year, you should probably trust their judgment. And I’m not going to claim mismanagement if I don’t know as many details as the guy making the decisions.

I get that, and trust is fine—to a point. But $11 million a year means the bar is higher, and when obvious gaps show up on the field, it’s fair to question those decisions. Nobody’s saying we know more about football than the staff, but when recruiting leaves us with a 17:1 carry ratio for RBs in a game, or no depth to take pressure off Mafah, you don’t have to be a coach to see something’s off. Trust doesn’t mean blind faith, especially when the results since 2018 show a clear downward trend. It’s okay to hold the staff accountable. That’s part of being a fan.

failure? You would think a RS sophomore could contribute a little when our starter is noticeably injured, we're not asking him to carry the load, just give injured Phil a breather here or there...We could have still put Phil in when they called the 50 yard QB draw

Oh, come on. So now we’re blaming the patchwork OL for why Mafah is out there 24/7? And Jay Haynes couldn’t possibly handle a single carry in that situation? Give me a break. This isn’t about “best blocking RB”—it’s about years of bad recruiting leaving us with no depth and no options. If your solution is just to run Mafah into the ground while Haynes collects dust, maybe roster mismanagement isn’t the only thing we should be questioning.

Exactly, 17:1 is laughable. Haynes might as well have bought a ticket to watch the game for how little he was used. At this point, we’re begging for an injury or burnout because Mafah’s being run into the ground. It’s like the staff has no plan beyond “pray he holds up.” Ridiculous.

Mafah spent a lot of time riding the pine behind Shipley, he is trying to pad his numbers for the draft, I think Swinney is actively helping him do that.

Clemson has no #2 RB. Anyone who’s ever been near Haynes in person can clearly tell that guy doesn’t weigh 170lbs with gear on. Have no clear what they list him as, but he’s the smallest RB I’ve seen at Clemson in years.
It’s almost malpractice to have zero depth at such an important position . Mafah has gotten to the point to where he has no 1st step.
Not sure what the plan is next year if they aren’t going to go buy a RB

Just a opinion:
Jarvis Green's 2nd best offer was Virginia Tech. Followed by Wake and some group of 4s. Adams Jr. 2nd best offer was USF. Followed by Air Force and some group of 4s. Jay Haynes had an Auburn and GT offer. Eziomume was a big time recruit but he's a true freshman.
I'm not sure there is a 2nd guy.
Spiller hasn't had the greatest start to his recruiting career.

Recruiting ? All recruiting has become is Who is going to pay me the most. Then when I take your money if I don’t produce I move on. If I do great then I renegotiate my contract. The NIL only benefits the player. That type of contract is no good!

No they are not. Because we have had players transfer out and because the players we would have recruited and got our share of went else where for the money! With a patchwork OL and a team that’s dedicated to stopping the run and bringing constant pressure, you have to keep your best blocker in the game.
You could also tell that Mafah was really having to guess where to block because the OLine was really out of coordination
I think Riley and Dabo would have been derelict in their duty if they had taken Mafah out.

Absolutely right. You have to function in the here and now.
If you want to indict the coaches for not having someone else ready, then do so. But they made the right move yesterday.
Our qb already took way too many hits as was. Who knows what would’ve happened had he taken more due to bad blocking. Might not have been in to win the game on that long run.
Games like this, cold, on the road, against a good team, with so much gone haywire, you just have to find a way to win. And when you do it’s a good day.

It might help if you have a few specific plays we can breakdown. Not disagreeing with you, just not sure what play(s) you’re referring to.

Mafah ultimately failed at blocking a blitzing defender, saying he whiffed utterly.
You believe me or call me a liar. It's up to you.
You can't defend this RB group. If you do, I completely disagree, and we can leave it there.
I have been saying the RB group management has sucked for years. You have said nothing or defended it.
So again, we can agree to disagree.

I’m attempting to have a calm and cool football discussion. I don’t think you are a liar, but I’m not rewatching the game to find the play. Pull it, and other examples, if you really want to discuss Xs and Os. If not, that’s ok too.
And I don’t think me not responding to posts about RB recruiting issues can be interpreted as anything other than I didn’t respond. I don’t see every post on the site, and only respond to a small percentage of the ones I do open.

Fair enough, FM. I’m not asking you to rewatch the game or respond to everything, but let’s not pretend the RB recruiting issue hasn’t been obvious for years. Whether you respond or not doesn’t change the fact that the lack of depth is a massive problem. It didn’t just show up overnight, and now it’s biting us in the arsh. If you want to talk Xs and Os, fine, but it doesn’t take the game film to see that we’ve been mismanaging the RB room for a while.

The way Pitt was playing the run and with our patchwork OL out there, it would not have mattered of Gale Sayers was running.

Hope we sit Mafah after the first drive against the Citadel. Need to have some game tape on the other backs, and Phil needs some rest.

Not sure what's going on but the family and friends in combination with the seniority system is biting hard at RB. J Haynes is incredibly small and not fast in the slightest. Be lucky if he runs a 4.55. Termite runs hard, limited foot speed, no comment on blocking or pass catching. Don't know. Surely we can have a freshman ready to play after 10 games. If not, then he's likely a bust as well. But I haven't seen enough to say because he could be stuck on the seniority hamster wheel. If we had 4 middle linebackers then Sammy Brown might not have seen the field yet. Holding out hope for Eziomume but our current 2 and 3 have limitations.

I think they’re obviously trying to hold Eze’s red shirt. We should see him show up the next game or two (don’t know how many he has been used in) As I recall, we have to big RB recruits on board for 2025 so should be fine there next year (if a little inexperienced)

Might be a stud. He is decently ranked for a dude his size. Maybe he will get up to 185-190 and be a great complimentary back.

Scouting Report Evaluated 09/01/2024 Greg Biggins Greg Biggins National Recruiting Analyst Henderson is dynamic with the ball in his hands and a true game breaker. He’s quick and shifty with some wiggle and explosive in open field. He clocked a 11.1-100m as a junior and plays even faster. He’s versatile enough to impact the game at running back, receiver and in the return game. In fact, he catches the ball well enough to play some slot in college and he should be fun to watch out of the backfield, on end arounds and as a kick/punt returner. For a sub 6-0 running back, he’s a tough kid and shows some physicality when he finishes his runs and is able to pick up yards after contact. He has a nice all around game and projects as a high Power 4 prospect with an NFL ceiling as well.

Mafah is slow. I love Mafah but we need a very speedy back , by the time Mafah gets to the line they are all over him. Our oline isn’t helping
