Ranking the Clemson sports seasons 20/21

Based on historical expectations and how the teams faired.
1. Softball - Nobody expected the team to have such a great season in year 1. Created an amazing foundation for the program moving forward.
2. Football - Our standards are so incredibly high now that this gets dropped from #1 based on the lopsided loss to Ohio State. Still an amazing year overall.
3. Men's Soccer - Another amazing year in fall and spring. Could've been #2 with a deeper tournament run.
4. Women's Soccer - First trip to the elite 8. Historically good season for the program.
5. Men's Golf - Great season with ACC title, individual national champion. Would've been higher with a better finish in the team aspect of the NCAAs.
----- gap
6. Men's track and field - ranked as high as #18 in a year that they thought they were being abolsihed.
7. Men's basketball - made the tournament, above the historical mean season for the program.
8. Women's golf - Made NCAA regionals, nearly qualified for nationals.
9. women's track and field - middle of the pack ACC
10. Rowing - 4th in ACC, slightly lower than historical average season.
11. Women's basketball - bit of a down year but not to the depths of previous regimes, a few positives moving forward.
12. Volleyball - Losing season again, not any worse than previous years though.
13. men's and women's cross country - near bottom of the ACC but that's normal for these programs.
14. Men's tennis - toward the bottom of the ACC, in line with the last 5 years of the program but very slight signs of improvement to give it the edge over women's tennis.
15. Women's tennis - One of the worst seasons ever for the program, usually a strong program at Clemson.
16. Baseball - Worst season for the program since 1957. Speaks for itself.

Very good analysis

I'd put Men's Soccer ahead of Football for the simple fact that I think we will eventually count Fall 2020 as a National Championship year. We were clearly the best team in the fall and had the tourney been in the fall - we would have won. We were #1 at the end of the fall and had the best player in the nation.
Football ultimately did slightly better than men's soccer in the official rankings/results for 2020-21, but due to the National Championship angle I'd split the hair the other direction.
The only other comment I'd have is that the gap between #7 and #8 on your list (which I agree with) may be larger than the gap between #5 and #6 (which I also agree is large).

I'm not following the gap between 7 and 8. Tia.

While Softball was a very nice surprise, I would place them 6th overall but #1 for unexpected.
Sorry, without the ACC title, that is less accomplished than. Football, Mens Soccer, Men Golf in that metric alone.
Womens soccer did better (#4) and while as unexpected as softball success, the mens track gave one heck of a "fight". They could have folded, phoned it in but they fought on. So that is #5 for me.

Think you have to rank softball 1 simply from the wow factor. True, they didn't play FSU or ND head to head and that would have made a huge difference in perception, one way or the other depending on what we did in said games.
That said, just the fact we did win the regular season in the ACC. Plus we did play in the championship game. Pretty hard when it's single elimination.
Obviously without Cagle we're probably not even having a conversation. The gap is wide in the ACC overall less FSU. I justify that because only FSU and va tech advanced to supers. ND and Duke should have been able to win their regionals. Especially Duke.
We have work to do to get a top program??? Sure, forked tounge DRad says he wants best is the standard in all programs, but what does that really mean? Softball to win a natty which is standard for football. Or, just make a regional, maybe make it to a Super every 5 years and possibly win a Super every decade. Is that considered successfully???

Great assessment as always. Good debate. Have to think on it a bit.
