Quote from CU admin today on adding Stanford, Cal, and SMU

4

Aug 25, 2023, 11:30 AM

"We are going through a process on the adding of these 3 fine potential members. Look, we are not going to block any deal that brings more money to the conference and adds teams that bring value. We think that could be the case with Stanford, Cal, and SMU; however, we are not there yet. We will continue to work to do what is the best interest of Clemson and the ACC."

Well, that certainly sounds like it will be a "YES" vote from Clemson. It also certainly sounds like we are adding those three. I look for it to happen by next weekend.

What does ESecPN and Disney want to do? Are they willing to part with the revenue to raise the payout? If the money comes, so does the yes vote.

It still won't equal SEC and B1G money but about $10 million more every year will help with a "thumbs up".

We’ll be like an ol’ grocery store chain, A&P (Atlantic and Pacific). They unofficially voted and it was no. The arm twisting will continue until enough yes votes. The ACC’s non-leadership team also brought us the GOR - how is this working out? Another day - just kick it off and let’s get started -Go Tigers !!!

The GOR has worked perfectly as intended. Perhaps the no vote was used to leverage ESPN which also appears to be working given the increased revenue.

The Clemson folks that support this have parked their reasoning skills in some lost cavern and are not thinking of what is best for the ACC or Clemson University. The question is not whether or not these are great institutions of learning. Notre Dame is as well. the latter is very selfish and has played the conference like a 'tambourine".
Commissioner Phillips and the school leaders should be ashamed of themselves for making a mistake that resembles the awful GOR deal engineered by John Swofford, if this deal goes through. The travel $$ expenses and harm on schooling alone will eat up any extra $ these 2 or 3 universities bring to the ACC.
Your end result will be some additional part-time ACC members--similar to Notre Dame. There is no merit to making this deal except to take the embarrassment of where the ACC is postured vs the SEC and Big?? out of the athletic income disparity discussions.
If you think this is a good deal, I hope you can afford to travel Berkley and Palo Alto to see a sporting event. Most tiger fans will not invest in this extravagant behavior. Noar will other ACC members' fans save for Notre Dame. Get real folks!

Are you crazy? Cal and Stanford will add nothing positive to the ACC. Those two institutions used to be looked up to for their leadership and academics but look at what they have become, a festering place where liberal ideas and agendas are born and propagated across the entire nation to the detriment of the republic's future......IMO
They need to stay in California and their graduates never allowed to leave that state to contaminate the rest of us.

As I've mentioned before I'm a Duke alum. Was golfing over the weekend and one of my friends has connections with some large donors. He heard that there is heavy political pressure being applied in the NC legislature to flip the UNC and NC State votes to a yes on expansion. In short, the state of NC is not going to mess up the UNC-Duke rivalry and all the olympic sports if the dollars can come closer to the SEC/B1G. Like it or not, we are all stuck here until the GOR expires in 2036.

3

Aug 28, 2023, 8:58 AM [ in reply to Re: Quote from CU admin today on adding Stanford, Cal, and SMU ]

I'm sure that's true in NC. That's why this conference is in the terrible shape that it's in. People on and around Tobacco Road still think basketball is relevant in terms of conference realignment, completely ignoring the fact that the Pinstripe Bowl draws larger TV numbers than a Duke-UNC basketball game. Anyone who tells you Clemson, or anyone else for that matter, is stuck in the conference until 2036 is trying to wish that into existence. While it's an impediment, the GOR is currently held by an entity that is going bankrupt, cannot financially afford to provide Pro-rata rates for the proposed incoming schools which is why they're only offering an additional $72 million as opposed to the roughly $120 million that any 3 current schools would make, and is actively being shopped by their parent company. Bringing in 3 teams that are value dilutive to the conference will trigger lawsuits from member institutions that don't agree, and just because NC and NC State may switch to yes votes, doesn't mean Miami, Virginia, or VT won't then switch to no votes as many believe some schools were hiding behind others "No" votes due to it only being a straw vote.

We need to change and have an agenda of inclusion. Its not politically correct if we don't look out for them. Besides, Notre Dame is calling the shots and we need to keep them happy. We will sign the GOR a third time to show our heartfelt change that we no longer want to keep them out of the conference and are willing to keep others happy instead of doing what is best for our fine university.

Aug 28, 2023, 7:08 PM

The quote didn't say anything about Clemson REMAINING in the ACC.

What we have been hearing is that adding these new teams to the conference will ENSURE/GUARANTEE that the conference membership will NOT drop below 14.

IF Clemson and FSU were staying (leaving out any thought of UNC leaving), then WHY would the conference leadership have to worry about dropping below 14 member institutions...UNLESS Clemson and FSU really want to LEAVE the ACC, and Clemson & FSU are using this opportunity to BREAK the GOR and it's respective penalties, wherein these new teams are a SWAP-OUT for membership and free-exit for Clemson and FSU.

Am I just being delusional here or what?
