Question for older Clemson fans.

Is this the biggest and most important Clemson-usc of your life? If not, what game had more importance than this? I was born in 1989 and I can't remember when our rivalry game had this much on the line. Even the Spurrier-Dabo era didn't have this much hype around it (IMO)

as "must wins," particularly the years we were selected for the CFP.
I know this one is important, but the others ranked right up there at least to me. I believe we need the Cuse to beat Miami to get into the ACCCG, for I'm not convinced a mere win over the Chickens will earn us a spot. That's because lurking somewhere in the Nefarious Realm will be powers that will push an agenda for the SEC. Included in those will be ESPN and their minions.

I believe the luxury of ensuring the coots won't make the PO adds a little to the value of this game. From a purely Clemson perspective it's true that we needed to beat them to secure our PO seed but this one holds the slightest emotional advantage, to me anyway, over those games in the past.
It will remind me of the days when we were their bowl game and those sure days when they had to win to qualify as for a bowl. Then, of course, we'd send them to the unknown and unwatched bowl games.
This game is our birth right but I'll admit, losing won't be as emotional as winning.

I am not this old … nobody is.
The 1902 game featured teams that, aside from their meeting, had a combined 8-1-0 record … this year the combined record is 17-5. Based on the numbers the 1902 game remains (pretty sure) the most meaningful meeting ever.
Also … the 1902 game featured violence that caused the series to cease … not to be renewed until 1909.

The most memorable and also the marking of Clemson’s emergence as a perennial power was the 1977 game at Willy B. Made famous by “The Catch” made by Jerry Butler and thrown by Steve Fuller to go 8-2-1. We lost to defending National Champion Pitt in the Gator Bowl. We played Notre Dame very close at home that year and they be some National Champions but not without escaping Death Valley with a scare. The year prior we were 2-9 with one of the two wins in 1976 coming on the last game of the year - against the Coots. And I don’t believe we have had a losing season since.

I remember 1977 as being an 'emergence' for Clemson also. I was in the Navy and listened to the ND game on MRN. 14-0 at the half was unbelievable as my Tigers were little known at the time.

I think there hype part has more to do with the current state of affairs in sports media. They are heavily addicted to clicks and over hype everything. Also the fact that the rest of the SEC is having a down year means they have an intense need for any team showing promise to do well. Then there is the 3rd ACC team possibly in the playoffs which will make SEC heads spin.
This game means the same as it has for a long time for me. The rest is only meant to make money for someone somewhere.

Absolutely YES! Dabo needs to prove he can survive the NIL onslaught that's taking his recruits and be successful against teams that are benefitting a great deal by the transfer portal also. It's do or die time for his program.

season does have a huge impact on this new 12 team CFP.
There have been several key games in the rivalry, 2 years ago was historic loss in Death Valley to a pretty bad Coot team that had no business beating our Tigers...as ugly a loss as I can ever remember and that includes 2012 Orange Bowl...WVA is not a rival, and that game was what brought the Legend Brent Venables to Clemson so it was actually a impactful loss.
This is for the CFP since you simply cannot rely/expect Syracuse to beat Miami so you go out and beat the other team, leave nothing to chance.
Go Tigers, beat the Coots!!

1971, we had lost 3 in a row. I started Clemson in 1969 and saw the last two losses. We went to Columbia having heard the Coots moved their best player safety/return man, Dickie Harris to tail back/wr. We had 5 ints. and won 17-7!
2014, after their 5 game run, 35-17, the first of 7!!

Not even close. The National Championships of 81, 16 and 18 would not have been won if we had not won the Clemson-South Carolina games. Of the 3 years, the game in 81 was by far the most important.

Could be one of Dabos most important games

As a lifelong fan, this game is always the most important to me!
I do think this could be very impactful for Dabo. When he lost to Spurrier, there was a sense of understanding giving his pedigree and Uber success at FL. Beamer has no such street cred and losing two of three to a newbie coach when our roster rates higher, our staff is paid considerably more and we have an experienced QB could cause even more of an erosion of Dabo’s ability to win in the current environment (which I despise).
Dabo is clearly not going to be fired with a loss, nor should any such thoughts be mildly considered. However, fans and supporters may begin to lose faith in the direction of the program should a middling USC team beat us at home two straight times. The energy and excitement may start to wane with a loss so I think this is an extremely important game for Dabo in particular.
Hopefully we play a complete game on both sides of the ball and send the chickens back to the Mayo Bowl.

Think about if we had lost to them in 2015 or 2018 and not been able to make a run at the Natty. That would have altered the course of the program in some way. Especially the 2018 run where we went 15-0. Maybe we still run the gauntlet, maybe not.
Enjoy this for what it is. Like Coach says, we just want to go 1-0 this week. Nothing more and surely nothing less.
Go Tigers!!!

Even the 1980 game was big, where both teams came in 5-5 so only one of us could finish with a winning season. Happily that was us, and was the start of my class graduating with a 4-0 record against SCar.

Agree with 1980!! George Rogers would win the Heisman but we won the game 27 - 6 and Danny Ford would use that as a stepping stone to the National Championship in 1981!!

Biggest game for the fans. Every year. We have so many players from other parts of the country that I’m not sure this is as big to them as it is to USuC because 60+ percent of their team is from in-state. Playoff implications make this year big to all of them so it should have plenty of juice. I agree with some about the 1980 and ‘81 games. Keeping George Rogers out of the end zone (again) in 1980 was a huge deal and of course, we would not have played for the national championship in 81 had we not beat the coots. They are all big because we have to live among their fans until the next year.

It wasn’t an important game, but an interesting one. I attended the Clemson Carolina game in Columbia in 1965. I was a freshman that year. Clemson was winning in the second half, so all of the Carolina fans had left the stadium. Carolina came back and won the game and the only fans still in the stadium were us few Clemson fans. If I have the wrong year someone can correct me. Things get a little fuzzy after all of that time. Go Tigers!!!

This game isn't that important in the grand scheme of things. There shouldn't be a 12 team playoff. Neither of these teams has any business being in a playoff regardless of the number of teams.
If we do make the playoff, we'll get slaughtered. If you're worried about narratives about our program, losing to a decent coot team is probably better than squeaking into a playoff, getting destroyed, and then having the SEC people gloat and dance on Dabo's grave.
I really don't understand just wanting to make the playoffs when this team has zero chance of winning even one playoff game.
