QB Scenarios . . . go on record here . . .
Feb 27, 2014, 5:07 PM

Barring injury:
1. Who starts the first game? 2. Do they start all year? 3. Do we use a two QB system, with more than one QB getting significant meaningful PT? 4. Does Watson redshirt? 5. Does Watson start or get anything besides mop-up at any point?

If Watson comes out this Spring and really lights it up and

beats out the competition--which is good and will battle him--then I do not see any reason why he should not go into Sanford Stadium in Athens and lead the Tigers to victory.

This is just for fun. An extremely small number of us have seen Watson play, other than on those clips, and we have not seen very much of Kelly, or even Stoudt for that matter; yet many on here have made predictions about how it's all gonna turn out. If you want to play, make a stab at it.

Hopefully that Watson WILL red shirt. To big a risk of destroying the confidence of a talented true freshman as Watson is, in starting him as a true freshman. Being bumped around in practice isn't even close to being hammered in a live action game. The D line, TEs, and LBs are much bigger, stronger, and faster in college than in HS. I would really hate to see his confidence shattered. Just let Watson play as much as he wants to on the practice squad. Or at least don't let him play until our O line has jelled and has proven they can protect our QB....

1. Stoudt
2. Yes, barring injury
3. Since we are talking about two QBs with totally different style I could see a package of plays utilizing Kelly's skillset.
4. Yes
5. No. Schuessler will be the #3 this season.

i could go with that as well, but contend that Swag Kelly or Chad or whatever...will play plenty. but i also would be surprised, according to sources we've all gotten to read, if DeShaun Watson actually redshirted.
but even with consideration of the guys in waiting who have earned the chance to start & time put in all...if he does do as well as these guys we already have, then he should play & start, that simple.
he has shown his ability everywhere else he's ever played apparently...would be stupid to not give him a shot at four year's run (3) of a program...or no?

Given Cole's stature, he could get dinged up. That's part of the reason we need Chad to get some meaningful experience asap. Also, I just like the idea of forcing defenses to spend prep time on two different style qbs and for the starter to know he will be going to the sideline for a series or two every game and not freak out about it.
I think Cole has NFL potential. He just needs to put on about 15 pounds of muscle.

barring injury it is Cole Stoudt's job to lose.. But since Watson is the QB that Morris envisioned running his offense I would not see why he wouldnt be in the mix to start.. I mean he wouldnt have wasted the time and effort to recruit this kid since he was a Freshman..

coming out of spring: 1. Cole 2. Yes 3. No 4. Yes 5. No, not going to waste a yr of eligibility on "mop up"
In the fall IF Watson has a great spring, which means Kelly bolts to 1-AA: 1. Cole 2. Yes 3. No 4. Yes... Unless injury forces him to play. 5. No.. will redshirt him if they can and give Mop up to Schuessler.
Under the second scenario, Watson will be the #2 talent wise, but they won't burn Watson's redshirt year unless they have to. Providing that doesn't happen, all mop-up time still goes to Schuessler.

these are amazing years of opportunity & chances if we can capitalize on them...we've got the players & seem to have the coaches.

1. Who starts the first game?
Hopefully Cole is up for the challenge, and hopefully we can get both some playing time in the first game. In my opinion, Stoudt will start. Swag will play. I hope both are capable, in different ways, of helping us win.
2. Do they start all year?
I hope we can maintain the above because that means things have gone pretty good.
3. Do we use a two QB system, with more than one QB getting significant meaningful PT?
Yeah, I think so..
4. Does Watson redshirt?
(If the above goes okay) Yes.
5. Does Watson start or get anything besides mop-up at any point?
I think Watson will be a game-changer..in his own time. He may ultimately have more skills than either of our main guys, but if we don't have to burn eligibility, then that would be best.

I find it hard to believe that Watson isn't THAT GOOD, if they spent so much, time, effort & energy on getting him & keeping him... however the best plan generally would be to redshirt him, leading to the above scenario exactly.
Stoudt has shown his arm accuracy & patience & vision on throws. He runs great, despite that he's tall & makes him look rather "gangly", but his throwing percentage his whole football career has been 70's plus, then his few chances last year he burnt'em up. Kelly is more vocally hungry & wants to play, & we all think & know he runs the ball well, with some question on how he throws because we just haven't seen it much.
no reason to think it pans out any difference than it has before or in practices...

No, (if things work out like expected he will most likely leave after 3 years regardless.) 5. Does Watson start or get anything besides mop-up at any point? Yes, might as well get some snaps. Most likely gone after RS Soph or Junior year.

"starting" being as important to him as performance, & Kelly so vocally wanting spotlight & PT. but i disagree with Watson, because i believe he actually digs Clemson alot & will be hard-pressed to leave & not serve his tenure...especially if & when winning Natty Champeens & such. i could see him leaving 1 year early perhaps...

are you kidding? No way Cole or any other player on that team does'nt want to start! Performance? Bull. I'm sure Cole wants it every bit as badly as "Swag".... Sorry, can't call him that anymore... it's Kelly.
Just cuz you don't call people out on twitter while your still in high school, or tell the media how bad you want it, or call meetings with the coaches if you don't get in the end of a game on senior day so your 5th yr senior can get on the field, doesn't mean you don't want it.
You know what "Swag" is. It's being comfortable with who you are and getting the job done. Example: Tom Brady. To this fan, #18 got him some swag of his own. He's keeps his mouth shut, and I bet he'd cut his left arm off to keep any other QB off the field for even one snap. ALL competitors at this level feel that way..... at least they better if you want them on your team.

My take...barring injury
Feb 28, 2014, 1:56 PM
|
|
Stoudt starts all year.
Kelly gets an average of 2 meaningful possessions a game.
Watson redshirts.
This sets up the significant battle for 2015. Kelly a red shirt Junior and Watson RS Fresh.
They will not name a starter until season begins... Both will play in 2015. Hopefully this keeps the backup content enough to stay. If Watson emerges, he may overtake Kelly for good in Kelly's Senior year (2016).
It is key to keep Kelly from transferring due to depth

think he's gonna win the job and keep it.
1) Stoudt 2) Yes 3) No 4) Who knows? That really depends on how he progresses early and also how confident the staff is in Kelly. I think I'm gonna say "Yes" though because they can always take Watson's shirt off in an emergency. 5) Not unless somebody gets injured. Since you said "barring injury" I'm gonna say "No"
