Prayers for my Father.

My father turns 73 this weekend. Today he is going to the urologist to find out if his elevated PSA levels are cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). His levels are high enough for a 25% chance of cancer. My Dad is my hero. He took me to Clemson games in the 1970’s and 80’s and now I take him. Even his business model has him servicing Clemson grad-owned businesses. Please pray he has great results from his visit with the urologist today. Thank you all in advance!

Prayers and thoughts from Blythewood, SC. Good on your father for staying on top of his health. Prostate cancer caught early is very curable. I have been on BHP meds for years with good results and my best friend HAD prostate cancer and had his removed. He is cancer free five years later. Good luck!

Good luck with his visit results and information. Some things I've learned going through a similar situation:

* My Dad died from prostate cancer that went to bone, but lived far longer than the 2 ears thought from his initial diagnosis, which was already stage 4. His 2 years became 6.

* My own PSA test results had been increasing slightly over the years and finally jumped from 3.0 to 4.0 about 2 years ago. My urologist said that while my prostate was enlarged, he normally woudn't have any cause for alarm because PSA tests are a notoriously bad indicator of the progression or seriousness of prostate disease. He's practiced as a urologist for many years at St. Francis in Greenville and has seen a tremendous amount of prostate disease. One of his patients had a PSA of an incredible 40 which turned out to be the result of a very enlarged prostate, but no cancer. After prostate reduction surgery his PSA was reduced to 4.

* Since my family history included my father's cancer, I underwent a biopsy which did indicate cancer (graded Gleason 4 - indication concern), but the amount detected was etremely small and of a very slow-growing type.

* Now, a year later, my PSA increased only .1 to 4.1 and I just underwent another biopsy for good measure. To my astonishment, there was less prevalence (volume and density) of cancer detected and what was detected (graded Gleason 3) was judged less threatening than the previous biopsy. Gleason 3 grades indicate no reason for intervention at my age of 80.

* Prostate cancer can be trouble if it goes undetected for a long time, but if detected early, several areas of treatment exist, which extend a person's years - and in many cases men live a long time with prostate cancer and eventually die from other causes.

* My point is that while prostate cancer is not anything you'd want to have, there are many things far worse in may cases - and may not be as big of a cause for alarm as it first sounds. It all depends on the type, stage and other health issues.

* Good luck!

Thanks for the info. He got a good prognosis yesterday. They put him on four medications. One for shrinking, two for urine frequency, and one for dribbling. They did another test (aspiration biopsy) and found only benign tissue. I haven’t seen my Dad so relieved in a long time. I hated to take the drive four hours away from the upstate last night. But it was an easier drive knowing everything is good. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers!

He's got me by about 5 years but I went through the same thing a year ago. My PSA made a big jump up and fortunately it turned out to not be cancer. I had to back off some of the work I was doing and it dropped some and eventually leveled off. After checking with my doctor, I have added a couple supplements that have really helped.

I was worried because my maternal Grandad had prostrate cancer in the early 1970s which turned out to be the slow growth cancer. He got some cobalt treatments and lived to 89 years old and didn't die of cancer.

Prayers done. 🙏🙏

As others have pointed out, everyone is different.
Had my prostate removed (robotically) in 2015 at age 61. After healing, minimal side effects. Have my PSA checked annually, and it is constantly <0.01. Life is good!

Same here. 2015 prostate removal after 15 years of watching high PSA levels.
Good luck to the OP's dad. Next step will be a biopsy which is the standard for detecting cancer. If cancer is detected, other options are cyberknife, cryo treatment, radioactive seeds, etc.

Praying for him

I'm 68 and was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year based on high PSA. Ultrasound revealed areas of concern. MRI confirmed and identified 12 possible locations within the walnut sized part of me. Biopsy revealed one with cancer.

I went to MUSC and was given the option to have focused cryo-ablation, which I took. The other options were active monitoring or complete removal. Had the procedure in late June and am now keeping my fingers crossed. I go back for a PSA test in October and hope my numbers are down.

Another member of my family (younger) had to have his removed and is now 10 years cancer free. My message is there is hope and treatment advances are available.

Wishing him and all of your family the best.

I want to start by thanking each and every one of you that took a moment to read my post and take time to offer up your thoughts and prayers. I really love our TNet family. I expect nothing less from Clemson men and women.

Prayers have been answered. His urologist did some ultrasounds and more extensive blood work and have decided it’s just benign prostatic hyperplasia. They put him on four medications to treat the issues. Two for urine frequency, one to shrink the prostate, and one for incontinence. They will monitor and recheck in four months.

I didn’t realize how heavy this was weighing on my father. He was as relieved and excited as I have ever seen him. Except maybe for my college graduations. He was absolutely glowing at his birthday dinner after the urologist appointment. God is good all the time!

Go Tigers!

On a lighter note: I read ' They will monitor and recheck in four months,' they will monitor the redneck for four months...and I thought about my 2 sons and 5 daughters calling me a redneck. It really lightened my burden for you, brother. God is patient and faithful with us!
